THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE

The Golden Gate is one of the world’s most famous

bridges. It attracts visitors from all over the world. The
beginnings were difficult: strong winds, tide and fog were
all in the way of constructing a bridge. Only one architect
was brave enough to do it – his name was Joseph Strauss.

Work on the bridge started in 1933 and was very difficult; the workers worked all day and
night. Four years later the bridge was finished. It cost $27 million. The length of the steel
wires used in the cables of the bridge is long enough to circle the earth three times!

It was for a long time the longest suspension bridge in the world; it is 8,981 feet (= 2,737 m)
long and 90 feet (= 27.43 m) wide. Since its completion, the bridge was closed due to windy
conditions: in 1951, 1982, 1983, and in 1996.

The bridge has six lanes of vehicle traffic, and walkways on both sides of the bridge. The
speed limit on the Golden Gate Bridge is 45 mph (= 70 km/h). On an average day there are
100,000 vehicles crossing the bridge.
