CHAPTER I. INTRODUCTION

It is part of a college curriculum that aims to train and orient students to

the work environment and their future careers as well. It is very important to not

only teach students about their chosen careers but to show students the reality

of working. Students who are taking up Bachelor of Science in Information

Technology are given the chance to undergo the so-called On-the-Job Training

to be able to apply the knowledge they acquired from school to their

respective chosen agencies. It is the beginning of the greatest

educational experience a BSIT student would encounter. It is one way of

developing their sense of responsibility upon performing the given task by their

supervisors and the rest of the office staff. It is also the time for a BSIT student to

develop the desirable traits of a future office worker.

Nature and Importance of the On-The-Job Training

On-the-job training(OTJ) can be described as the process of passing

along the skills, knowledge, and competencies needed for employees to

perform a specific job in the environment of their workplace. On-the-job training

is highly effective because it uses the existing workplace tools, machines,

documents, and equipment which simplifies the process of adapting to the new

work environment. This type of training is normally used for practical tasks. On-

the-job training is not the most effective or efficient method however, it is easy

to arrange and manage. No transfer of learning is required, and because the

Department of Science in Information Technology

training is performed on the job it is highly realistic. On-the-job training is

inexpensive and it doesn’t require special equipment but what is normally used

for the specific job and does not require a training guide. OTJ is a subject for

pieces of research, highlighting its importance and benefits. A large majority of

employee learning is accomplished through on-the-job training. When well

designed, the ON THE JOB TRAINING program provides the needed resources

and knowledge from competent staff managers, while setting performance

standards.

Objectives of the On-The-Job Training

On-the-job training, also known as OJT, is a hands-on method of teaching

the skills, knowledge, and competencies needed for students to perform a

specific job within the workplace. Students learn in an environment where they

will need to practice the knowledge and skills obtained during training with a

duration of 460 hours. On-the-job training uses the existing workplace tools,

machines, documents, equipment, and knowledge to teach an employee how

to effectively do his job. Training takes place within the employee's normal job

environment and may occur as he performs actual work. Or it may happen

elsewhere within the workplace using dedicated training rooms, workstations, or

equipment. The simple objective of OJT is to use the existing environment, tools,

and skill training available in the workplace to train students to do their jobs—on

the job.

Department of Science in Information Technology

Location and duration of the On-The-Job Training

The internship was undertaken from August 2018 to December 2018 and

was performed from Tuesdays to Fridays. Covering the minimum required hours

of four hundred sixty (460) hours at GoAbroad Philippines, Inc. (GAPLabs),

Calanipawan Rd., Tacloban City, Leyte 6500. The office is open from 8:00 am to

6:00 pm.

The internship was undertaken from August 2018 to December 2018 and

was performed from Mondays to Fridays. Covering the minimum required hours

of four hundred sixty (460) hours at River Valley Distribution, Inc. (RV), 181 P.

Burgos St, Tacloban City, Leyte 6500. The office is open from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm.

Profile of the Training Agency/Institution

GAPLabs began as Asian Data and Internet Solutions whose sole purpose

was to provide technical support for GoAbroad.com and its family of

meaningful travel websites. The Asia Data team grew and so did the drive and

innovation of the team members. It was obvious that the operation was not

content with being a ‘support’ team for an overseas company.

Department of Science in Information Technology

The name GAPLabs illustrates a combination of GoAbroad Philippines and

the corporate culture of education, invention, and technology. GAPLabs is

locally managed and driven, team members have conceptualized the

direction of the company and guided it forward. Focused on Family, Careers,

and Lifestyle GAPLabs has created beautiful and meaningful projects that are

making the world a better place.

professional development projects and enhances the local technology

community by creating Web Camps. Gap Academy offers programming and

design classes to local children and ongoing training opportunities for team

members.

Families are valued at GAPLabs, both team members’ families through

regular activities and parties for staff families and our work families.

graduates from schools such as the University of the Philippines - Tacloban,

Eastern Visayas State University, Leyte Normal University, ACLC, and St. Paul’s

School of Business and Law. From employees who are fresh graduates to

cornerstone members of the organization with over 10 years of experience with

the company, there is a wide range of knowledge and personality at GAPLabs.

River Valley Distribution Inc (RVDi) was founded in 2003 to trade in a single

commodity – sugar. This has enabled us to introduce other commodities like rice

and salt, vegetable oils, and animal feed products.

Today, we are a leading distributor of FMCG products in Cebu and Eastern

Visayas. Our breadth and depth of coverage is our strength. With our

headquarters in Tacloban City and offices in Cebu, Ormoc, Calbayog, and

Chapter III: ACTIVITIES PERFORMED

● In-Plant Training Program

The in-plant Training program is a compulsory part of the academic

duration of the College of Information and Technology. It will not be

completed just like the certification course. The internship period plays a

unique role in a student’s life. Training in the sense it provides various ideas

and also leads the students to think outside of the boundary limit to

encourage their creativity and innovation. This internship program gives

full-fledged energy to the students to face this world with basic

knowledge about the companies and processes involved and to solve

real-world problems.

After the successful completion of studies, students have to face this

competitive world with this knowledge to face many problems and to find

the right solutions which are to be solved in a minimum duration of time.

Some problems are to be solved by our knowledge but some are from our

experiences. Experience gained by us, by knowing the error possibilities

and also thinking and designing the elimination techniques logically and

technically.

This in-plant training program of the college of information

technology focuses on knowledge and skills development before the

application of IT theories and concepts. School linkage industry experts

from relevant fields would provide insight and training to the students.

● Areas of training

The training areas of the on-the-job training held in GoAbroad

Philippines, Inc. (GAPLabs), Calanipawan Rd., Tacloban City, Leyte 6500,

and River Valley Distribution, Inc. (RVDi), 181 P. Burgos St., Tacloban City,

Leyte 6500.

● Daily Routine

The student’s trainee presents the day-to-day standardized actions

or procedures that are followed regularly and often repetitiously.

Department of Science in Information Technology

Chapter IV: SELF ASSESSMENT

In this chapter, the student trainee comprehensively self-assessed the

additional knowledge and skills achieved during the training program.

● ACHIEVEMENTS

○ Skills and Current Technology Learned

■ The value of teamwork is that great software is developed by

a great team.

■ Collaboration. Discussing problems and finding an efficient

solution.

■ Improved our communication skills and knowing when to ask

for help.

■ Improved our problem-solving skills.

○ Equipment, Tools, Machinery, Testing Machines, etc.

■ UNIX Terminal - Learned the basic to intermediate

commands.

■ Local Development Environment - Learned how to set up my

workstation for development.

Department of Science in Information Technology

■ Version Control - Had real-world experience with how version

control plays an important role in collaborating with the

development team.

■ Visual Studio Code - Deeply know this code editor and

learned how to customize it to make my programming tasks

easier.

■ Learned some collaboration tools to make communication

between teams easier and more effective.

■ Learned a software development framework to manage and

direct a project to the desired result.

○ Strong Points versus Weak Points

Based on the tasks that I have solved there’s still a lot of

improvement to be made. My code is not efficient enough, needs

more refactoring, and my logic needs more clarity. I might not be

the best intern in GAPLabs' history but I will make sure that every day

I’ll be a better developer than yesterday.

○ Best Experiences on the Job

The best experience of being an intern at GAPLabs is the

environment I like being around like-minded people. Always

Department of Science in Information Technology

learning from one another. Always lifting each other. I love being

around them because they always push me out of my comfort

zone, they correct me when I’m wrong, and they are always willing

to help.

○ Evidence of Background Preparation

Before the internship officially started I attended the

orientation to gain more information about the company. The

company policies and lastly the dos and don’ts for the interns.

● Faults

○ Causes

The cause of faults is if the task is not familiar to me, I find it

hard to work with it and I’m feeling shy towards our supervisors. And

also if I didn’t pay attention to what the supervisors are saying.

○ Suggested Solutions

If the task is unfamiliar better to talk with your supervisor about

it so that she can teach you how to do it. Don’t feel shy about

working, instead be confident so that you can do better on your

tasks. Lastly, always listen authentically to your supervisor to

avoid mistakes.

Department of Science in Information Technology

○ Personnel Relations

My relations with the company personnel especially with our

supervisors have a boundary during office hours and even during

break time. Sometimes they treat us like their own kids or a sister, we

can laugh together and make fun of everyone. But despite this

closeness, we remain in that space to be respectful to them and

control ourselves during office hours.

○ Integration with the Company Personnel

The integration with the Tech team at GAPLAbs was like a

family. I felt that I was one of the regular employees of the

company. They were open-minded and considerate whenever the

intern had some questions regarding the job given to him. Then,

they taught him different strategies on how the intern’s work can be

easier, faster, and enjoyable. The company employee and the

intern worked as a team every working day.

○ Attendance and Punctuality

I had a problem with my punctuality during my stay at

GAPLabs. I do hate being late and I always find a way to improve

myself with my issue in punctuality.

Department of Science in Information Technology

○ Interest and Commitment

During my internship, I was interested to learn new things and

I enjoyed the struggles with the tasks given to me. My commitment

to my internship was full-heartened. I gave my best every time I do

something at my job.

Department of Science in Information Technology

Chapter V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATION

This chapter, the intern contains insights into how on-the-job training

incorporated into Information Technology program offered by the school will be

enhanced, alternative solutions to have better company management, and

advice to the upcoming interns who will conduct worksite training at the same

company.

● Potential Company as a Training Ground

The company can give the trainee good experience, knowledge,

and skills by allowing the student trainee to use different equipment. The

employees of the company treated the trainee as their co-workers and

they teach different strategies to build their learning. This is a good training

ground for all outgoing interns.

○ Availability and Appropriateness of Facilities, Tools, Machinery, and

Equipment

I would like to recommend GAPLabs and RVDI to other interns

because it has better facilities conducive to learning. Likewise, it has

an established customer-friendly environment with adequate

facilities for clients and proper office decorum.

Department of Science in Information Technology

○ Company Personnel Cooperation

I observed that the personnel especially our supervisors are very

supportive and they are so approachable, easy to be with, and

willing to teach their knowledge in doing the job. And because of

their desire to render good quality service, they would like the intern

to do the same that’s why they will teach you the technique and

technical know-how.

● Assessment of the Duration of Training

The duration of the internship was good enough to acquire the

knowledge and skills needed to work in a real working situation. The

required time is enough for me to be exposed to the office

apprenticeship/training, public affairs, employee-to-employee

relationships, and professional communication with supervisors and clients.

The training time is also enough to accomplish all the given work.

Department of Science in Information Technology

● Proposed Revisions for the Improvement of the Training Program

The OJT Coordinator should continue to find a bigger and more

well-known company as a training ground for future interns. This will be

very helpful for the next interns to apply their field of specialization as

Information Technology students.

● Advised the Future interns

o Give your best.

o Keep things simple.

o Focus on your assigned work or task.

o Be honest.

o Learn when to ask for help.

o Be diligent.

o Be punctual.

o Always smile.

o Don’t be shy.

o Be friendly.

o Be proactive.

o Find ways to improve your skills.

o Always be there for your workmates.

o And most of all say Sorry if you do something wrong.
