Water pollution is making matters worse. In the case of the Indian Subcontinent, 30
percent of the major Himalayan rivers are biologically dead for fishing and usage for
human consumption. Rising population is another factor which is affecting the per capita
water availability. In this connection it is pertinent to note that in 1951 water availability
in India was 5177 cubic metres per capita per year, which had been reduced to 1342 Cubic
metres per person per year by 2000. With the rise in population since the year 2000 it
must have become worse. Shortage of water and its centrality is going to cause major
social and geopolitical stresses. Our neighbours like Pakistan, China and Bangladesh are
having their own problems due to water scarcity. Since water resources of the Indian Sub-
continent are monolithic in nature, the shortage has its own international ramifications.
Therefore, there is a need to address the water issues on priority.

35.1. What seems to be the major cause of river pollution? (1)

35.2. Why are the Himalayan rivers considered ‘biologically dead’? (1)
35.3. List two ways to prevent river pollution. (2)
36. Read the sources given below and answer the questions that follows:

Investment in human resource (via education and medical care) can give high rates of
return in future. This investment on people is the same as investment in land and capital.

A child, too, with investments made on her education and health, can yield a high return
in future in the form of higher earnings and greater contribution to the society. Educated
parents are found to invest more heavily on the education of their child. This is because
they have realized the importance of education for themselves. They are also conscious
of proper nutrition and hygiene. They accordingly look after their children’s needs for
education at school and good health. A virtuous cycle is, thus, created in this case. In
contrast, a vicious cycle may be created by disadvantaged parents, who themselves
uneducated and lacking in hygiene, keep their children in a similarly disadvantaged state.

Sakal & Vilas. (2)
