in their study of CSA Standard W47.2, the Canadian Welding Bureau

Short Eormat Answers 1. (Cl. 1.1) This Standard provides the requirements for the certification
of companies engaged in the fusion welding of aluminum and for the
qualification of their personnel and welding procedures.

Note: This Standard is not intended ƒor applicutions governed by


codes such as the Americagn Society oƒ MViechanical Engineers (ASME)
Boiler gnd Pressure Vessel Code and codes oƒ the Americgn Petroleum

2. (CI. 1.2) The requirements of this Standard are based on the principle
that a cernfied companyhas full responsibility for the quality of
the welded product ït produces, and this responsibility cannot
be transferred to its employed or retained personnel, or to the
administrator of this Standard.

(F), horizontal (H), vertical (V), or overhead welding (O) positions. |
Classification — refers to the various types of welding personnel. e.g.,

$ “T” refers to awelder's and welding operator's ability to weld from


one side without backing and achieve complete penetration in the
root pass, e.g., hollow section, pipe and plate.

$ “S" refers to a welder's and welding operator“s ability to weld


plates and rolled or hollow sections for the full thickness of
material, when welding from both sides with back gouging, or
when welding from one side with backing, or for welding square
groove welds from both sides, without back gouging, within the
thickness limitations of the accepted welding procedure data
sheets for the process used.

$ “FW” refers to a welder's and welding operator"s ability to deposit


fillet welds and tack welds.

$ “WT” refers to a welder”s ability to deposit tack welds.

8. (Cl. 3) Welding Procedure Data Sheet (WPDS) — a document, used in


conjunction with a WPS, detailing the welding parameters and ranges
for welding a specific joint, over a range of thicknesses and weld sizes,
as illustrated on the data sheet.

Short Form8at Answers 10. (Cl. 4.1) This Standard shall be administered by the Canadian Welding
| Bureau (CWB).

11. (Cl. 4.6) For a company that is not meeting the requirements of
certification, the CWB shall notify the individual identified in Clause
5.1.5 of the specific requirements that are not being met. The
company shall demonstrate to the CWB within a reasonable period
of time that the non-compliances have been resolved. In the event
that a company does not resolve the non-compliances set out in the
initial notification, the CWB shall notify the Chief Executive Officer, or
a person designated by the Chief Executive Officer, that the company's
certiication will be withdrawn ïf the non-compliances are not
resolved.

12. (Cl. 4.9) Where examinations are required, they shall be administered
by the Canadian Welding Bureau. Individuals may seek exemption
from these examinations on the basis of a combination of education,
training, and experience comparable to formal courses of study in
the subjects covered by the examinations. In the case of refusal of
exemption, individuals may appeal to the Advisory Committee.

Clause 5

13. (Cl. 5.1.2) A company applying for certification doing only field work
involving welding need not have a plant or shop, but otherwise
shall conform to all the requirements of this Standard in order to be
certified.

14. (CI. 5.1.4) The requirements of this Standard may not be appropriate
for certain welding techniques, processes, operations, and specialized
Products. A certified company, or a company applying for certification,
may seek exemption from the requirements for welding procedure
approval, and welder and welding operator testing and qualifications,
for items such as, but not limited to:

$ maintenance welding operations;

Section 2 $ weld overlays;


$ products that utilize welding for non-strength sealing operations

only; or

$ manufactured products outside the scope of the company's


certification.

Such exemptions, when granted, shall be clearly stipulated in the


relevant documentation and shall not contravene the requirements
Of any authority having jurisdiction unless prior approval to do so is
obtained from the authority having jurisdiction.

15. ((I. 5.1.5) The company shall designate an individual who,


irrespective of other responsibilities, shall have defined authority and
responsibility for ensuring that the requirements of this Standard are
implemented and maintained.

16. (Cl. 5.2) The differentiation of certified companies shall be based on


the following:

$ Division 1 — the company shall employ a welding engineer on a


full-ime basis;

$ Division 2 — the company shall retain a welding engineer on a part-


time basis; and

$ Division 3 — the company is not required to employ or retain a


welding engineer.

17. (Cl. 5.4) The following personnel shall meet the requirements of this
Standard:
$ welding engineers for Division 1 and Division 2 companies;
$ welding supervisors; and
$ tack welders, welders, and welding operators.

18. (Cl. 5.5.2) The Company shall prepare, and keep on file for review by
the CWB, a report showing the following:

$ the name of each tack welder, welder, and welding operator;


$ the processes and welding position upon which each may be
engaged;

$ the expiry date of qualiication; and


$ the qualifying authority, if other than the CWB.

| Each report shall clearly indicate any changes made during the

Clause 6

19. (CI. 6.1) Division 1 and Division 2 companies shall designate a welding
engineer, in accordance with the requirements of Clause 5.2.

20. (Cl. 6.4.2) The employed welding engineer for a Division 1 company
shall have a minimum of five years of welding-related experience in a
company or companies producing aluminum weldments.

(Cl. 6.4.3) The retained welding engineer for a Division 2 company


shall have a minimum of five vears of welding-related experience, of
which at least three years involves experience related to aluminum
welding procedures and practices.

21. (Cl. 6.4.4) Each welding engineer shall demonstrate a basic khowledge
of aluminum, aluminum welding fundamentals, aluminum welding
metallurgy, and aluminum welding procedures and practice. In
addition, the welding engineer shall demonstrate thorough knowledge
of applicable welding codes and standards. This knowledge may be
demonstrated by providing proof of examinations passed in these
subject areas at approved educational institutions or from continuing
education courses (see also Clause 4.9).

Short Format Answers 22. (CI. 7.2.1) The welding supervisor shall have a minimum of five vears
of welding-related experience pertinent to the company's type of
operations. Reduction in the required years of experience may be
claimed on the basis of Clause 7.2.6.

23. (Cl. 7.2.2) Each welding supervisor shall have a thorough knowledge
of the company's welding procedure specifications and related
data sheets for processes with which he/she is involved, as well as
a thorough knowledge of those portions of applicable standards
pertaining to his/her normal work.

(Cl. 7.2.3) Each welding supervisor shall be able to read drawings and
properly interpret welding symbols and shall have a knowledge of
weld faults, quality control, and inspection methods pertaining to his/
her normal work.

(CI. 7.2.4) Each welding supervisor shall be familiar with the proper
Operation of the types of welding equipment for which he/she is
responsible.

24. (Cl. 7.3) lí the welding supervisor is continuously employed in that


position, his/her qualification shall remain in effect indefinitely unless
there is a specific reason to question his/her capability to perform that
function.

25. (Cl. 7.4) Where proper control of welding operations cannot be


exercised by fully qualified welding supervisors, such control may
be delegated by the welding supervisor(s) to a person of lesser
qualifications. The qualifications shall be acceptable to the CWB.

Short Eormat Answers 26. (CL. 8) Each company shall produce and implement an operational
| control procedure (see Figure G.1) as part of the WPS or as a stand-
alone procedure. The operational control procedure shall be used
in connection with all projects completed ïn accordance with this
Standard and cover, at a minimum, the following:

a. base metal:
$ identification of base metal (e.g., mill test reports); and
$ special-handling or project-specific instructions relating to base
metal;

b. filler metal:
$ identification of CWB-certified ñiller metal to be used; and
$ special-handling or project-specific instructions relating to filler
metal;

c. WPDSs:
$ verification that the WVPDSs are CWB accepted and available for
fabrication of the project; and
$ astatement indicating whether new WPDSs will be required;

d. preweld checklist:
$ verification of material preparation in accordance with the WPS
and/or the applicable Standard; and
$ verification of CWB welder qualifications applicable to the
project; and

e. postweld visual inspection: verification that the completed


welds meet the visual acceptance criteria specified in the WPS,
the governing Standard, and/or any project-specific inspection
requirements.

Short Format Answers 27. (Cl. 9.1) The company shall have welding procedure specifications for
each welding process in use, outlining the general welding procedure
to be followed in the construction of weldments built in accordance
with the governing design or manufacturing standard, or both. Each
welding procedure specification shall include applicable essential
variables. All welding procedure specifications shall be submitted
to the CWB for acceptance and when stamped as accepted shall be
considered as registered with the Canadian Welding Bureau.

Note: Suggested welding procedure specification ƒormats for the GIAW


and GMAAW processes are provided in Annex A.

28. (Cl. 9.2.1) The company shall prepare welding procedure data
sheets for welded joints used by the company in accordance with
the requirements of this Standard. VVPDSs shall be prepared by the
company"s personnel for all joints and submitted to the CWB for
review and acceptance (see Clause 9.2.2). Information included in the
WPSs and WPDSs shall be made available, in any convenient form, for
use by authorized personnel responsible for the execution of welding.

29. (Cl. 9.2.2.6) The minimum thickness considered qualified shall be that
thickness for which the pertinent essential variables can be practically
applied, but it shall not be less than 1.5 mm (1/16 in).

Clause 10

30. (Cl. 10.2.1) To reduce the number of procedure qualification tests


required, the base-metal alloy groupings listed in Table 1 have been
established. Tests conducted with a base-metal group shall qualify
all other base metals in its group. When welded joints are made
between two base metals from different groups, welding procedure
qualification tests shall be conducted for the applicable group
combination, whether or not qualification tests have been conducted
for each of the base metals. Alloys other than those listed in Table 1
shall be subject to qualification tests.

31. (Cl. 10.2.3.2) A new welding procedure shall be required when any
s essential variable, as listed in Table 3, is changed.

Short Format Answers 32. (Cl. 10.5.1.1) For all welding processes, the thickness of the groove
test assembly, T, shall qualify the following plate thickness:

$ T<3mm test welds shall qualify for plate thickness range of T to


1.25T.

$ 3mm<7<10mm test welds shall qualify for plate thickness range


of3mm to 2T.

$ 7> 10mm test welds shall qualify for plate range of T/2 to 2T.

$ T>3mmsquare groove welds


$ having zero root opening and welded from both sides without
back gouging shall qualify for 7 thickness only; and
$ welded from one side with backing shall qualify for T thickness
only.

33. (CI. 10.5.1.2) The number and type of test specimens for all welding
DrOCesses are given in Table 4 and shall be prepared from locations in
the test assembly as indicated in Figure 7, 8, 9, or 15, as applicable.

34. (CI. 10.5.3.5) The convex surface of the bent specimens shall be
examined for the appearance of cracks or other open defects. For
acceptance, surface discontinuities shall not exceed the following:

$ 3mm {1/8 in) measured in any direction;

$ 6mm(1/4 in) on the corners, unless the corner crack resulted from
visible inclusions or other fusion-type discontinuities, in which case
Item (a) shall apply; and

$ the sum of the greatest dimensions of all discontinuities exceeding


1mm (1/32 in) but less than or equal to 3 mm (1/8 in) shall not
exceed 10mm (3/8 in).

35. (CI. 10.5.4.2) The ultimate tensile strength of the test specimen
E (averaged ïn the case of multiple test specimens) shall be not less |
Section 2 than the tensile strength specified in Table 7 for the lower as-welded
9 strength of the base-metal alloy used in the test assembly.

36. (Cl. 11.1.1) The qualification of welding personnel shall be governed by

37. (GÌ. 11.1.3) Qualification tests in this Standard are designed to be


indicative of basic skills. However, continuous guidance by a qualified
welding supervisor and additional instruction as indicated shall
be provided to ensure that welders and welding operators follow
qualified welding procedures and consistently meet the applicable
quality standards.

38. (Cl. 11.2.1) Welding personnel shall be qualified in one or more of the
following classifications (see Clause 3):
$ Tclassification;
$ Sclassification;
$ FWclassification; and
$ WT classification

39. (Cl. 11.2.5) Qualification for WT classification shall qualify for WT


classification only.

| 40. (CI. 11.4.1) The four modes of process application are listed below.

41. (ClI. 11.4.2) Welders qualified for semi-automatic welding shall be


considered qualified in the same process(es) as welding operators
for single electrode mechanized and automatic welding. They
shall be subject to the conditions and limitations of their welder
qualifications, except the period of validity shall be indefinite.

42. (Cl. 11.5.1) The qualification of welding personnel in a given class


and classification shall be in accordance with Table 9 unless testing
follows Clause 11.5.4. A change in progression in vertical welding
shall be qualified separately.

43. (Cl. 11.6.1) For qualification of welders and welding operators with
the GMAW process, the following electrode alloy groups apply (See
