To gain insight into the perspective of fishermen in the Philippines about the

problems of coral reefs in the Philippines and their importance in different fields,
the researchers conducted interviews with a minimum sample of five fishermen.
The participants were selected in Laoang, in the province of Northern Samar,
Philippines, because the province is surrounded by sea. The researchers picked
communities that are near shore and areas with different degrees of coral reef
degradation. The interviews were conducted by using forms with different
questionnaires, mainly focusing on the fishermen's experience of fishing, their
perception of changes in the coral reef ecosystem, and their understanding about
the importance of coral reefs and the causes of the decline of coral reefs. The use
of interviews by using go-betweens allows us to gain an in-depth understanding of
the fishermen's experience perspective on the importance of coral reefs and to
identify their importance in the ecosystem. The findings of the study can inform
the development of effective conservation plans for the coral reef ecosystem in the
Philippines.
