Objectives:

1. Identify the different types of mangrove roots.

2. Describe each type of mangrove root.

Direction:

Identify the illustrated mangrove roots into: (Prop/stilt root; Buttress root; Plank
root; Pneumatophores; Cone/peg root; or Knee root) and and then describe each type of
mangrove root.

Buttress Root lower trunk which join lateral
roots to stem.

Aerial roots shaped like a

Cone/Peg Root cone, shorter and more woody
than pneumatophores.

Aboveground roots shaped

Knee Root like a knee.
 Ribbon-like and vertically
Plank Root flattened lateral extensions.

Pencil- or cone shaped aerial

roots arising from lateral roots;
Pneumatophores
spongy/corky.

Adventitious roots that form

Prop/Stilt Root
on the stem above ground.
