Case study

Teen used and sold drugs to feel popular – but he ended up completely alone

Peter, 17, wanted his matric farewell to be special. He was very nervous about
asking girls to dance. A boy in his class told him that he would give him something
to help calm his nerves and make the matric farewell the best night of his life. The
boy handed him a little bag with some pills in.

As Peter walked into the dance, he reached into his tuxedo pocket and took out a pill
stamped with the image of Tweety Bird. The pill was actually ectasy (also called E,
X or XTC). It looked harmless enough, but Peter found out the hard way just how
dangerous it could be.

“My heart was racing so fast. I thought I was having a heart attack,” Peter said. His
legs wouldn’t stop trembling and his body tingled all over. “Then I hit a peak,” he
said. “I felt like a movie star.”

Later, Peter’s “high” turned to depression and confusion, so he swallowed two more
“E” pills to try to feel better. This was very dangerous, as he could easily overdose,
meaning that his body would not be able to keep up with the amount of drugs in his
blood, causing major injury to his organs and even leading to death. “I lay down and
couldn’t lift my head,” he said. “I felt like I was going to die.” Fortunately, he
recovered from this but he was hooked.

Soon Peter was selling “E” at raves where many of his school friends hung out. “I’d
walk into raves and yell ‘E’ and people would crowd around. I felt a sence of
power.” With the profits, he bought more ecstasy. “I did drugs because they made
me popular and gave me confidence,” he said.
