IMAGE OF THE MONTH Australia

The past 12 months have seen extensive flooding throughout Australia, with all mainland
states affected. The floods and related landslips have caused extensive disruption to a
number of key rail corridors.
Many kilometres of track were washed away, causing extensive damage that required
expensive repairs, notably in central Queensland and the Blue Mountains of New South
Wales. Much freight traffic had to be diverted to road, with a resultant loss of market share.
At Murray Bridge in South Australia, the normally dry floodplain under the viaduct carrying the
Adelaide – Melbourne railway over the country’s largest river has been inundated for the first
time since 1956. An eastbound interstate freight train crossing the bridge in early January was
led by a locally built SCT class diesel locomotive and four Chinese-built CSR class ‘Pandaroos’.

Expanding the

Swedish company Railway Metrics & Dynamics has developed a low-power monitoring

more effectively as well.

amounts of hype to the rail
sector over the past decade and more,

particular could be a big winner. There
have been long-standing aspirations
from across the sector for advanced
sensors and battery units to address a
slew of commercial challenges, from
trimming overheads to mitigating safety
risks and finally matching the customer
service provision offered by road
haulage. Yet it is equally fair to argue
that for all the hope of the past 15 to 20
years, widespread adoption of IoT has
remained stubbornly elusive, and the
‘system level’ improvement in railway

pushing for has yet to come to fruition. The RMD serious accidents, but even wheelflats kind of technology much cheaper and
