Interviewer : okay Mam, first of all, I really appreciate that you make time for
this interview, I’m Yuliana, from UIN Raden Fatah, I would like to
ask few questions to you, ok let’s jump to the questions.
Interviewee : Sorry I couldn’t turn on my camera, because the signal isn’t really
stable. Do my voice is clear?
Interviewer : Yes, it is okay, do you mind if I take a quick screenshot?
Interviewee : Sure, okay.
Interviewer : My first question, can you tell about your experience in teaching
English for Specific Purpose?
Interviewee : My teaching experience in teaching EAP, sorry what do you call
that, ESP?
Inteviewer : yes, Mam, English for Specific Purposes.
Interviewee : Actually, I’m a midwifery lecturer at campus, but I’m not English
tutor, I taught Special English for Midwifery. So as about my
experience, I think maybe I have little experience about teaching
ESP, one year until three years for English Class, for teaching
English for midwifery students.
Interviewer : How do you teach your students about the differences between ESP
with General English? Can you describe it?
Interviewee : Alright, to my class when I teach ESP for the midwifery students,
I teach my students what is the different between ESP and Bahasa
Indonesia first, because they need to know the rules in English is
different from Indonesian language. It is important for them to fully
understand, and then I teach them general English, for reading,
writing, listening, and speaking. After that, we proceed for our
specific purposes material, as example pregnancy, public health,
preventive health issues, child, and many others. I also teach them
how to write a journal, and article, and also for the competencies
exam or UKOM.
Interviewer : my next question, do you have problem in teaching ESP for
midwifery students?
Interviewee : Yes, I do. There’s some problems during the process.
Interviewer : What are the difficulties when you teach ESP for midwifery
students? Please explain more!
Interviewee : The difficulties comes from specific materials related to Midwifery
knowledge principle, some of the words, maybe not familiar, like the
students difficult in words producing, they need to understand both
the pronunciation and the meaning, and the words could be specific
words to be used for checking up, diagnose, and making action
toward a patient. I think the difficulties to my student are to explain
the difficult words to them and to introduce strange words.
Interviewer : Do you consider yourself as EGP lecturer or ESP lecturer? Why?
Interviewee : in my perspective, to teach as an ESP lecturer, is easier for me, also
this is my major, my educational background, so I can share my
competencies for the students. When I teach English, or like writing
a journal, or an article, or examination, it is just wider from my
competencies.
Interviewer : Do your students listen carefully when you are presenting the
material in front of them? Can you describe it?
Interviewee : For the previous semester, I try to communicate with them by
uploading pre-record video on the Youtube channel to be discussed
by them, not only by that method, but also I used any others like live
discussion, via zoom meeting so they can feel the class lively. It
really hard to judge, either they focus on the class or not, but I hope
they did. And we all know, it is like a new thing to be adapted in
online learning.
Interviewer : Do you have any difficulties to make your students more discipline
in the teaching ESP activities? Please explain?
Interviewee : In my class, I used discussion and presentation so they can use their
capability in speaking English and also to write, I need my student
to be on time, so they can be more discipline and stick to their
schedule.
Interviewer : How do you describe your students’ motivation in learning ESP at
STIKES Abdurahman Palembang?
Interviewee : In my previous class, previous student, They are more motivated in
learning English, some of them are willing to study abroad and get
scholarship or they can work abroad, or work from other countries.
Interviewer : How do you give your students motivation in learning ESP and to
what extent does their motivation become difficulties for you in
teaching ESP?
Interviewee : I teach them, I tell them and share a story about student that already
get a scholarship and succeed to work abroad, and how they become
a good midwives, so they can get a motivation. I don’t see it as a
difficulties, more like a responsibility for me as their lecturer.
Interviewer : How do you manage your time for the activities of teaching ESP?
Interviewee : Actually, my class start at 7.00 in the morning, and its only like 2
SKS (credit system) so their class end at 9.00, at this pandemic
situation, probably because the signal or the online technical, it could
be delayed sometimes.
Interviewer : What do you think about the time of ESP class, is it a challenge for
you to manage your students learning time?
Interviewee The time in teaching ESP, I don’t think it is difficult for me, but as a
Lecturer, we tell the students, how to adopt with this kind of
pandemic situation, as they will work in medical field, they will
communicate with medical doctor, patients or public in general, we
should encourage them to be able to manage their time. Honestly
there are so many material for them, so as the Lecturer, I really do
my best to make sure the students reach their target.
Interviewer : What do you think about the facilities at this school. Do they help
you in teaching ESP in the learning English process?
Interviewee : the facilities actually really help in teaching, but because of the
pandemic, and online learning, students really needs good & stable
internet connection. So since then, they didn’t come to school, I hope
this pandemic would end soon, so they can go back to school.
Interviewer : oh I see, so the students didn’t come to school, yeah. I hope soon
the situation will be better.
Interviewer : Do you have any challenges that you as ESP lecturers face in
curriculum development?
Interviewee : Before we start the semester, me and my team, actually one of
fellow lecturers, like we decided to part the teaching schedule, I will
teach the student before mid-semester and another lectures will teach
students after mid-semester, and we really think about what material
that suit the students and our head office really wants us as to not
only contribute in making the RPS, but also give feedback.
Interviewer : What do you think about STIKES curriculum that been applied in
the learning process, is it appropiate or not? Why?
Interviewee : I think they already discussed and the school give their student good
curriculum but at the same time, we also keep improving. For your
information, after we finish the RPS, it will be uploaded in site called
OCW like Online Course Wired, so the student can access them
when the class start.

has met the students needs of English? Why?
Interviewee : Yes, I do. The whole ESP Teaching trying to meet the students
needs. For me first, I think as the lecturer, it good for us to let them
to get introduce to the native speaker so they have experiences like
how midwives in UK, or midwives at USA or other countries and of
course, also learn English from the native speaker. But right now, we
have pandemic, and boundaries, I hope someday it could happen.
