What initially inspired you to become an ESL teacher and teach English to foreign
students?
It’s pandemic when I enter the world of ESL. My cousin encourages me to apply
in Acadsoc since I am already 19 years old at that time and the company hires 18 years
old and above. I tried applying and lucky I got hired. I started falling in love with this
kind of part time job. I can work at the comfort of my home.

2. Can you describe any personal experiences or reasons that led you to choose teaching
English as a second language?
I saw books in our home as a child, which made me want to learn Chinese and
Japanese. So when we learn about these ESL positions. Given that I have no prior
teaching experience, I felt both challenged and happy at the same time. The company's
free training program for recently hired teachers is something I appreciate.

3. Did someone you know encourage you to become an ESL Teacher? In what way?
Yes, my cousin encourages me to become an ESL teacher. We are just living in
an average life. I am from a broken family. It is also an eye opener why don’t give it a try
to earn and save money for my education. I am thankful that I become an ESL teacher
because it helped me a lot financially and even develop my personality.

4. Is your bachelor’s degree related to you being an ESL teacher?


Yes, it is related since I teach English to my Chinese students.

5. Are you interested in learning and acquiring different cultures from different nationality
that is why you have this kind of job? Why or why not?
Yes, I am interested learning and acquiring different cultures. It is also helpful
and useful when we learn their culture. As for me I am interested in learning Japanese
culture and their language since I want to work in Japan and it is an advantage for me if I
already learn their culture.
6. What strategies do you use in teaching English to foreign students?

I believe in an active learning environment where students can practice speaking


English with each other and me. I also like to incorporate games and activities that keep
students engaged while reinforcing important concepts.

7. How do you manage the diversity of your students?


As a teacher I need to assess my student’s needs. When they can’t understand I
need to translate it in Chinese in order for them to understand and they will not feel that
learning new language is difficult and boring.

8. How will you assess your students’ learnings after your lesson?
In the activity or exercises I can see if the student understands the lesson. If not, I
will discuss again in order for them not to forget because there are instances that
the student easily forget the words specially if that word is unfamiliar or they just
know it for the first time.

10. What instructional materials/tools do you prepare before the class?


I don’t prepare instructional materials or tools because it is provided by the company.

11. What are the common challenges you have encountered when teaching ESL to foreign
students?
There are rude students that they don’t want to study English but their parents
forge them to learn because it is also for their advantage in the future. I also
encounter zero level student. It is very challenging to teach zero level students
sinc they know nothing. It needs a lot of patience and effort to teach them.

12. How do you manage your time as an ESL teacher?


As an ESL teacher I am the one who will choose the class time. On weekdays I usually
open slot in the evening from 6pm – 9 pm. On the weekends I am available whole day.
ESL in a flexible job you can teach anytime.

13. What are the barriers that you’ve encountered when it comes to language and culture?
The language barriers when it comes to language is we are different first language
learned. I just use translator and props. So that, the student will understand me.
We also have different culture but I need to adjust and understand them. Just like
they don’t celebrate Christmas.

14. What technical problems have you encountered before and during the learning process?

We cannot avoid technical problems just like slow internet connection and worst the
power blackout. Sometimes the microphone I can’t hear my student even their cameras are
not working.

15. What are the challenges you have encountered in preparing instructional materials and
working space to fit in to the students that you have?
I don’t prepare instructional materials since it is already provided by the company. When
it comes to working space I just use white background.

16. What opportunities or benefits have you gained as an ESL teacher?


I become more open minded about the real world. How difficult to earn money
and live by myself. It’s also an advantage for me since at the young age I learned
to become an independent person. It also helps me financially and support my
needs. I can also use this experience in my future career.

17. What skills have you learned and improved in being an ESL teacher?
The skills I learned and improve being an ESL teacher is how to deal with
students and what strategies should I use.
18. What benefits did you received from the company that you are working with?
I only received the perfect attendance bonus.
19. How does your job as an ESL teacher uplift or improve your economical status?

I really help me a lot because I earn more than the minimum wage. I can buy the
things that I need and sometimes my wants.

20. How does teaching ESL improve you personally?


I improve how I socialize to other people. Before I don’t really know how to
make friends, how to socialize. I am shy to talk to other people. But because of
many students I met and talk I improve it.

21. What are foreign language/s have you learned w whn ithile teaching ESL?
I learned a little bit of Chinese.
22. What cultures and traditions have you learned from your students?

I learned their festivals such as the Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival,
and Chinese New Year are widely observed with great enthusiasm. They are an essential
component of Chinese culture. Every holiday has its own set of traditions and customs;
the most significant and widely observed holiday is Chinese New Year.

23. What different management skills have you developed in teaching ESL to foreign
students?

Teaching foreign students are not easy it needs a lot of patience and I need to be lively
but it helped me to build confidence and taught me on how to teach different level of
students.

24. How does teaching ESL improve you professionally?


ESL improve me how to deal with anger. Sometimes there are naughty and rude
students but as what I have learned in our trainings we should smile always even
if you are not feeling well we shouldn’t let the student knows it.
25. How did teaching ESL developed your teaching skills and pedagogy?
I develop how to manage students. Before I will have our actual class
there are trainings that will help me to become an effective teacher. It helps me
how deal with different levels of students. I can use props and TPR or Total

Physical Response if the students are beginner. As a teacher I should observe


what are the student’s weakness and focus on it.

26. How did it help you in choosing strategies in teaching English as a Second Language?

Managing students is very important. I am thankful that the company helped me


developed this kind of skill. Since I was exposed in teaching different levels of
students. It made me become more lively and patient when teaching kids.

27. What have you developed in handling different students?

I developed my communication skills. Before I don’t know how to deal with different
students when my class is about to start I felt nervous since I don’t have regular students. But
now I overcome it I am not nervous if I have new students.
