My Field Study

Experience (Reflection)
Before we got deployed to our respective partner
schools, I was excited, thinking that we got to observe
classes for the whole month. It was a good experience to
observe how teachers respond and tend to the needs of
every learner. I am assigned to observe students in grade
7. Observing students who returned to school after two
years of a pandemic was a difficult experience. I could say
that their learning ability is like that of an elementary
student. Many are also non-readers. I have interviewed
some of them regarding their struggles in school, and
many have the same answers: they struggle to
comprehend the words they are reading. During my first
week of observation, I have come to realize I was once like
them, and what they need is good communication and
rapport with the teacher so they can open up more about
what they need. The learners vary in their learning styles.
During discussions, teachers try their best to deliver the
lesson, explain the concepts thoroughly, and cite
examples that are based on their own experiences, but
when they give a test, the majority of the students still get
a very low score.
My Field Study
Experience (Reflection)
Their class setup is different. I don't know if it is the
same with the other school that classes each day will
only cater to 2 subjects, which means only one subject
in the morning and one in the afternoon. With this
setup, I was confused because we all know that a child's
brain will only be active for an hour or even less. What
about if the class is four hours? Will the students still
actively participate? Even adults become bored when
attending two-hour symposiums or talks; how much
more will children? But since it is their system, they
know what's best for their learners. During their first
periodical examination, the grade 7 students in all
sections got only half or below-average scores on fifty
items. While answering our field study book, there is a
part that requires us to interview the school about how
many honors (only in my assigned year level) they have.
After interviewing, I was shocked to hear that from the
5 sections of grade 7 students, there are only 2 with
honors, coming from the first section only.

Experience (Reflection)
But above all, on my part, I could say that I
learned a lot from it. From having and building a
good relationship with the learners to using
different teaching styles and strategies when
teaching them, I know that I could use it for future
use, especially since we will be deployed next
semester during our student internship, hopefully.
Every experience we have will help us grow, not just
personally but also professionally, in our chosen
field. I know that it is not easy and that obstacles are
always there, but I do have faith in myself, and
trusting the process along with trusting the Lord is
what matters most to me.
