Learning Objectives
At the end of this lesson, you are expected
to:
1. view the pictures and attach the
proverbs that are depicted in the
pictures;
2. discuss Philippine proverbs that
are depicted in the pictures; and
3. make a poster as a culminating
activity of the lesson.
What is
Proverb?
• Filipino proverbs are called “Salawikain”,
which is sometimes interchangeable to
kasabihan (saying) and sawikain
(although this is the same as idioms).
What do proverbs
impart in our lives?
Like most proverbs around the world it imparts a
lesson. There are proverbs that express a general
attitude towards life and the laws that govern life,
there are also proverbs that express general truths
and observations about life and human nature.
Filipino proverbs are part of one’s
cultural heritage which should not
be forgotten, What information can
be derived from proverbs?
Proverbs are good sources of information
about traditions, beliefs and customs. They
serve as a guide to living, advice on social
relations and encouragement in facing
life’s trials and realities.
What is the main purpose
of proverbs?
The main purpose of
proverbs is to teach a
lesson in life.
Examples:
Damiana L. Eugenio, the
author of the Philippine
Proverbs Lore (1975), and a
professor from the University of
the Philippines, is referred to as
the “Mother Philippine
Folklore”. She identified six
categories of Filipino proverbs
based on the topic that these
proverbs express.
Ethical proverbs are proverbs that express a general attitude toward life and the
laws that govern life itself.

Example:
Bago mo sabihin at gawin, makapitong iisipin
Example

Before you say and do, think it over seven times.

Sa buhay, ang pagkakataon ay madalang dumating.


Kapag narito na, ating samantalahin. ( Filipino)
Opportunity knocks only once, grab it or lose it.

Proverbs that recommend virtues and
condemn vices
Example:

Kapag maigsi ang kumot, matutong


Example
mamaluktot. (Filipino)
While the blanket is short, learn how to bend.

Kapag may tiyaga, may nilaga. (Filipino)


If you persevere, you will reap the fruits of
your labor. (English)
Proverbs that express a system of values

Example:
Matibay ang walis, palibhasa’y
magkabigkis. (Filipino)
Example
A broom is sturdy because its strands are
tightly bound. (English)

Kung may itinanim, may aanihin. (Filipino)


If you plant, you harvest. (English)
Proverbs that express general truths and
observations about life and human nature

Example:

Example Kung di ukol, di bubukol. (Filipino)


If something is not meant, it will not
come to be. (English)
Humorous proverbs
Example:

Ang magnanakaw ay galit sa kapwa


magnanakaw. (Filipino)
Example
A thief hates a fellow thief.

Miscellaneous proverbs
Example:
Batong Pgulong-gulong, di kakapitan ng
lumot. (Filipino)
Example
A rolling stone gathers no moss.
(English)

Kapag apaw na ang takalan, kailangan


kalusan. (Filipino)
