Motion Notes and Practice Problems

Explain the difference between Displacement and Distance: (At least 3 sentences)

Distance is how far you’ve traveled whereas Displacement is how far you are from the start.
To calculate distance, the direction is not considered. To calculate displacement, the
direction is taken into consideration. Distance considers magnitude whereas
Displacement considers both magnitude and direction..

Using Displacement and Distance, Explain the difference between Speed and Velocity:

Speed is distance/time whereas velocity is displacement/time. Speed is a scalar value while

velocity is a vector.

Using Google Sheets, create a Position v time graph for a car travelling down the road using
this data and insert it below the table:

Time (in seconds) Distance (in meters)

0 0

3 15

6 30

9 45

12 60
What is the equation that represents the motion of this car?

y=5x

If an airplane flies from Salt Lake City to California, a distance of 1143 kilometers, and it takes
approximately 50 minutes to fly that distance, how fast is the plane traveling in kilometers per
hour?

22.86 kph

If you drove north to downtown Salt Lake City, which is a distance of 30000 meters, driving at 35
meters per second how long would it take you to get there in minutes?
14.28 minutes.

If you can jog at a constant speed of 2 meters per second, how far will you jog in 1 minute?

120 meters
