Course Outline This introductory course covers the basic concepts and theories of Macroeconomics. Macroeconomics focus
es on economic problems at the aggregated (e.g., national) level. It examines the determination of important
economic variables, such as the level and rate of growth of output (gross domestic product), the rate of infla
tion, the level of unemployment, as well as flows of imports and exports and the balance of trade.
Class 1 will be an in-person class on the regular timetable. In this class, the instructor will provide an overview
of this course and a Q&A session.
In even-numbered classes (i.e., Classes 2,4,...,14), the instructor will give a lecture on the assigned chapter(s)
of the textbook. All the even-numbered classes except Class 2 will be provided in the form of on-demand lect
ure videos at the course website on Waseda Moodle. Class 2 will be an in-person class on the regular timetab
le. After attending or viewing the lecture part of each even-numbered class, students are required to complet
e an online quiz by the next odd-numbered class. (The deadline for an online quiz for Class 14 will be the end
of the semester.)
In odd-numbered classes except Class 1 (i.e., Classes 3,...,13), the instructor will explain the answers to the on
line quiz for the previous even-numbered class and also provide an Q&A session. All the odd-numbered class
es except Class 13 will be in-person classes on the regular timetable. Class 13 will be a real-time online class
on Zoom. The link to the Zoom session will be availabe at the course website on Waseda Moodle. In the Q&A
sessions, students can ask questions related to the content of this course and also general questions about
macroeconomics. For general questions, the instructor will try to give his best answers.
Separately from online quizzes for even-numbered classes, there will be an online take-home exam as the fina
l exam at the course website on Waseda Moodle. Students must submit their answers to this exam by the en

Objectives The objective of this course is to introduce to students how economists think and analyze the economy as a
system. Mathematical skills beyond simple algebra are not required in this course.
