The main beam of UB 610 x 229 x 101 kg/m in steel grade S275 supports secondary beams of UB 406 x 140 x
39 kg/m on its top flange. The schematic diagram of the floor supported by the beams is presented in Figure 1.
a) Discuss the design process of a structural steel beam in Figure 1 and determine the possible failure on the
main beam with respective clauses for its design verifications as per Eurocode 3.
b) The slab floor is reinforced concrete 150 mm thick with 50 mm screed on top of it. The slab floor carries the
uniform distributed load of 400 kg/m2. Calculate the ULS load on the secondary beam.
c) Check the cross-section classification of the main beam.
d) By referring to appropriate clauses in the EN 1993, verify the adequacy of the main beam due to lateral-
torsional buckling, cross-section design resistance to shear, possible reduction of cross-section design
resistance to bending moment in regards to the high sear area and transverse force design resistance.
