Semester - VII
During Semester Assessment Examinations-I, Oct- 2021
Subject Code & Title: CE 706 Design of PSC Structures
Date: DD.MM.YYYY Time: 1½ Hrs. Max. Marks: 50
Instructions to Students:
1. Question no.1 is compulsory.
2. Answer any 3 questions out of the remaining four.
3. DO NOT use a pencil to mark your responses except for drawings/diagrams/sketches.
4. Assume suitable data if missing.

1. Discuss the pre-tension and post-tensioning system used in the pre-stressed concrete structure.
Address the advantage and disadvantage of the pre-stressed concrete structure usage compared to other
concrete structure. (5 Marks) (CO-1) (L1, L2)

2. A rectangular concrete beam 300 mm wide by 200 mm deep spanning over 8 m is pre-stressed by a
straight cable carrying an effective pre-stressing force of 250 kN located at an eccentricity of 20 mm.
The beam supports a live load of 2 kN/m: (i) calculate the resultant stress distribution for the centre-of-
span cross-section of the beam assuming the density of concrete as 24 kN/m 3. (15 Marks) (CO-2) (L1,
L2, L3, L4)

3. An un-symmetrical I-section beam is used to support an imposed/live load of 3 kN/m over a span of
10 m. The sectional details are top flange, 300 mm wide and 60 mm thick; bottom flange, 100 mm wide
and 60 mm thick; thickness of the web = 80 mm; overall depth of the beam = 400 mm. At the centre of
the span, the effective pre-stressing force of 100 kN is located at 50 mm from the soffit of the beam.
Estimate the stresses at the centre-of-span section of the beam for the following load conditions: (i) Pre-
stress + self-weight + live load. (15 Marks) (CO-2) (L1, L2, L3, L4)
4. A rectangular concrete beam 300 mm wide and 300 mm deep is pre-stressed by a force of 540 kN at a
constant eccentricity (e) of 60 mm. The beam supports a concentrated load of 70 kN at the centre of a
span of 3 m. Determine the location of the pressure (thrust) line at the centre (L/2) and quarter span
(L/4) sections of the beam. Neglect the self-weight of the beam. Draw the neat sketch of the thrust line
at mid and quarter span. (15 Marks) (CO-2) (L1, L2, L3, L4)

5. A pre-stressed concrete beam with a rectangular section 200 mm wide by 300 mm deep supports a
uniformly distributed load of 4 kN/m, which includes the self-weight of the beam (assume self-weight of
concrete to be 24 kN/m3). The effective span of the beam is 6 m. The beam is concentrically pre-stressed
by a cable carrying a force of 200 kN. Locate the position of the pressure (thrust) line in the beam. (15
Marks) (CO-2) (L1, L2, L3, L4)
