The Order of DeMolay was founded in 1919 with nine members, most of whom lived
near each other in Kansas City.

History of the Lapu-Lapu Chapter

In 1946, the International Supreme Council of the Order of DeMolay, granted a letter
temporary to the Lapu-Lapu Chapter in the Philippines. However, due to the lack of information
pertaining to the DeMolay Movement, most of the Dad Masons who formed the Advisory
Council, trained the new members as boy scouts. This caused the members to lose interest and
eventually, the Dad Masons also lost interest.

When Dad Juan Causing, the founder of the Lapu-Lapu Chapter returned from an
assignment, being a colonel in the Armed Forces of the Philippines, he found out that the letters
temporary were forfeited due to inactivity.

Since he has been sent to the USA by the AFP, he took this opportunity to go to the
International Supreme Council in Kansas City to explain to the Grand Secretary, Dad Frank S.
Land, founder of the Order of DeMolay, the possible causes of the inactivity of the Chapter.
After listening to Dad Causing’s explanation, the Grand Council granted second letters
temporary to the Lapu-Lapu Chapter on July 2, 1949 with Dad Causing as the Chapter Advisor.

The Chapter was instituted on January 6, 1957 with 30 members as chartered. They
received 2 DeMolay Degrees which were conferred by Dad Masons, together with Dad Edgar
Shepley, PMC, PSMC, as the director of the degree work. He was an outstanding Mason who
later became a Grand Master Mason of the Philippines.

On March 7, 1958, the International Supreme Council of the Order of DeMolay granted
the Lapu-Lapu Chapter their chapter. The Lapu-Lapu Chapter is the mother chapter of the
Visayas Jurisdiction.

Significance of the Emblem

The CROWN is symbolic of the Crown of Youth and constantly reminds a DeMolay of his
obligations and the seven precepts of this Order.

The TEN RUBIES honor the founder, Frank S. Land, and the nine youths whose ties of
friendship drew them together in the formation of the Order of DeMolay.

The HELMET is emblematic of chivalry. Without which there can be no fineness of character.

The CRESCENT is a sign of secrecy and constantly reminds DeMolays of their duty never to
reveal the secrets of our Order or to betray the confidence of a friend.

The five-armed WHITE CROSS symbolizes the purity of your intentions to always remember the
motto of the Order.

The CROSSED SWORDS denote justice, fortitude and mercy. They symbolize the increasing
warfare of DeMolay against arrogance, despotism and intolerance.
