6. Basara. - 2:50 4 5 The kolo leader is very important in east Serbia; he leads
the dance and improvises many steps which the other dancers try
*vocal/ pevano to follow. Rhythms are in z,/4 and, especially near the borders of Romania and
Bulgaria, in 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, etc. The dance is often asymetrical, moving more to the
right than to the left; there are occasionally dances where the dance phrase is
shorter, sometimes longer, than the normal 8-measure musical phrase. Steps
are usually on the whole foot ( [!r ).

The dances are described here in three systems: (1) word notation, (2) Roma-
notation (the system devised by Vera Proca-Ciortea and her colleagues at the
Folklore Institute in Bucharest), and (3) Labanotation. TECHNICAL TERMS are
defined in the glossary (page 28).
Five of these dances were first noted by Ljubica and Danica Jankovit in vol-
ume V of their eight-volume collection of Yugoslav folk dances. Two of these
dances were first noted by Agatha Zic. The remaining five dances were first
noted in villages by Desa Djordjevit. See specific source reference with each
dance.

Measure numbers are placed in hexagons ((D). Numbers of repeat measures
