Identity The students are learning about the seasons and many students expressed
their excitement about the fall and Halloween.

Literacy I am teaching them to look at events in the story to predict what will happen
Skills/Standard next. As well as looking at the details in pictures.

Intellect We are learning about the fall season that will further help their
understanding of the different seasons.

Criticality They must look at the elements and details in the story to try to figure out
what season it is and to predict what will happen next.

Joy The read aloud is for everyone, as it does not specify any type of holiday. It
just represents a season, which everyone can celebrate.
Before Reading “Launch”

Comprehension focus/instruction:

● Pre Teach about the different seasons and the characteristics of the seasons.
● Ensure the students understand that it is fall.

Vocabulary introduction:

Words taught: Fall, pumpkin, sneeze, leaves

Teaching method(s): Teach by showing off the pictures. What does a pumpkin look like? Then
show them the picture.

Discussion Questions (label whole group, turn & talk, or other method used):

Turn & talk turned to the whole group: What does the front cover tell you about the book?
What season does it look like? How can you tell?

Whole group talk: Raise your hand if you like fall.

Reader/Listener Purposes or Jobs (tell students what their reading/listening job is while you are reading
aloud):

While I read the story try to make predictions of why she might be swallowing all these things.
Also think about the aspects that represent fall.

During Reading

After she swallows the shirt, turn and talk: What do you think she is going to swallow next?

Turn & talk at the end of the book: Why do you think she swallowed all these things? What is she
doing?

using your star words “I like…”
● Interactive retelling: There will be cut outs of all the characters and elements of the story.
Using the felt story board, place the characters and elements around to retell the story.
