Image blanking on the trailing edge of the second side of sheet

with heavy paper under a low humidity environment

[Symptom]
When a heavy paper is used under a low humidity environment, image blanking [a] may occur on the trailing edge of the second
side of the sheet.
This symptom does not occur when the trailing edge margin of the second side is 4mm or more.
The arrow [b] indicates the direction of feeding.

[Cause]
If the trailing edge of paper flaps when it passes through the guide [a] just before the secondary transfer assembly, a tiny space
[d] may be formed between the trailing edge [b] of paper just in front of the nip of the secondary transfer roller and ITB [c].
If electricity is discharged in this space, polarity of toner on ITB changes and the toner will not be transferred onto the paper. This
results in the above mentioned symptom.
This symptom is likely to occur when a rigid and thick coated paper is used under a low humidity environment where the set value
of the secondary transfer voltage is high.

[Service work]
Choose and perform among the below a), b) and c) according to the conditions under which the customer is operating.
a) Widen the trailing edge margin of the sheet
a-1) Increase the setting value of Service mode > Mode List > COPIER > Adjust > BLANK > [BLANK-B].
Change of the adjustment value by "1" increases the trailing edge margin of the sheet 0.04mm.
The range of setting is from "0" to "1000"
[Caution] Change of the setting increases the trailing edge margins of all the output with a media other than "thin paper/recycled
paper 2".
a-2) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur.

1
If the symptom has not improved sufficiently, fine-tune the setting values in the steps a-1)

b) Extend the range where trail edge weak bias is applied.

b-1) Increase the setting value of Service mode (Lv2) > Mode List > COPIER > Adjust > HV-TR > [B2TR-LNG].
Change of the adjustment value by "1" extends the range where trail edge weak bias is applied 0.1mm.
The range of setting is from "-100" to "+100" ("0" by default).
[Caution] The change of this setting that lowers the secondary transfer voltage of the paper trailing edge part (the range of
correction amount) of all the output sheets may result in a mottling image with a high density image.
b-2) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur.
If the symptom has not improved sufficiently, fine-tune the setting values in the steps b-1)

c) Lower the secondary transfer voltage applied to trailing edge with customized settings
The secondary transfer voltage setting works only when all the conditions (mode/environment/paper type) registered beforehand
are met.
16 different patterns are registerable by registering the settings to each "TR-DUP1" to "TR-DUP16".
The below procedure is to set "TR-DUP1".
c-1) Go toService mode (Level 2) > Mode List > COPIER > Adjust > HV-TR > and change the setting value of "TR-DUP1".
- If the symptom occurs in 1-sided mode, change the value to "41".
- If the symptom occurs on the second side in auto 2-sided mode, change the value to "42".
- If the symptom occurs on the second side in multi-purpose tray 2-sided mode, change the value to "43".
The range of setting is from "11" to "43" ("11" by default).
c-2) Go to Service mode (Level 2) > Mode List > COPIER > Adjust > HV-TR > and confirm if the setting value of "TR-ENV1" is
set to "1".
The range of setting is from "1" to "3" ("1" by default).
c-3) Choose the appropriate value from among the below tables according to the used paper type and apply it to the setting value
of Service mode (Level 2) > Mode List > COPIER > Adjust > HV-TR > "TR-PPR1".
The range of setting is from "1" to "25" ("1" by default).

c-4) Go to Service mode (Level 2) > Mode List > COPIER > Adjust > HV-TR > and change the setting value of "TR-VL1" to "-5".
The range of setting is from "-128" to "+127" ("0" by default).
Change the setting value by "1" changes the secondary transfer voltage 30V.
[Caution] The secondary transfer voltage of the paper trailing edge part is lowered and a mottling image may occur with a high
density image.
c-5) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur.
If the symptom does not improve sufficiently, reduce the setting value in the step c-4) by "5" at a time down to "-30" until the
symptom improves enough.

Blank area caused on the 2nd Side of Postcard by poor transfer

due to leaving a Postcard in the high-humidity environment.

[Symptom]
Blank area might be caused by poor transfer when the 2nd Side of a Postcard is output after leaving it in the high-humidity
environment.
The arrow [A] indicates the feed direction.

[Cause]
If you leave the postcard in the high-humidity environment after outputting the 1st side of the postcard, absorbed water from the
air makes surface resistance of the postcard low. If "2nd Side of 2-Side page" is selected under the low surface resistance
condition, the 2nd side receives too much current during secondary transfer. This suppresses toner transfers to the paper,
resulting in the symptom.

[Service work]
"2nd Side of 2-Side page" should not be set for the printing setting after leaving the Postcard in the high-humidity environment.
[Reference] The setting "2nd Side of 2-Side page" is the suitable setting for the dry condition just after passing the 1st side.

Scratches on image

[Symptom]
A scratch [a] may appear on an image.
This symptom is more visible especially in a high-density image portion on heavy paper where the density is greater than the
density of a halftone.
The arrow [b] indicates the direction of feeding.

[Cause]
The symptom occurs if dust or foreign matter is adhered to the rib of the Upper Separation Guide [a] in the Fixing Unit.

[Service work]
1) Open the Right Door, hold the light-blue grips [1], and remove the Fixing Unit [2].

2) Open the Lower Separation Guide [a].

4
3) Clean the rib of the Upper Separation Guide [a] using lint-free paper moistened with alcohol.

4) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur.
If the symptom does not improve, check other causes.

White spots/white streaks on image due to lubricant attached

[Symptom]
White spots [a] or white streaks [b] may be generated.
The arrow [c] indicates the direction of feeding.

[Cause]
Lubricant is applied to the bushings of some rollers/gears to prevent their abrasion.
If the lubricant applied is attached to a part such as the feed guides [a] within the area between the paper pickup assembly and
the secondary transfer assembly, the lubricant would be scraped off with the leading edge of paper when paper is passed through
and would move onto the ITB in the secondary transfer assembly.
It becomes hard to transfer toner onto paper at the spots where carries lubricant on the surface of the ITB, hence the
aforementioned symptom occurs.

[Service work]
1) Select Settings/Registration > Adjustment/Maintenance > Maintenance > Clean Inside Main unit[1],and press "Start" button[2].

[Reference] T he cleaning takes about 80 sec.

6
2) Print out full page halftone image on 3 sheets of A3 or 11x17 (6 sheets with A4 or LTR) or more and confirm if the symptom
does not occur any more.
If the improvement of the symptom is not sufficient, a couple of implementations of Procedure 1) are required.
3) Print out full page halftone image on 3 sheets of A3 or 11x17 (6 sheets with A4 or LTR) or more and confirm if the symptom
does not occur any more.
If the symptom does not improve, check other causes.

7
Color difference between the front and the rear sides due to
uneven density (shading)

[Symptom]
Color difference between the front side [a] and the rear side [b] due to uneven density (shading) may occur.
The arrow [c] indicates the direction of feeding.

[Service work]
1) Go to Settings/Registration > Adjustment/Maintenance > Adjust Image Quality > Auto Adjust Gradation > and execute Full
Adjust following the procedure shown in the UI screen.
[Reference] The following shows recommended paper for Japan, USA, and Europe.
-JPN : CS680/68g [Nippon Paper]

- In case [F], select "Fine Adjust" of Yellow and enter "-35" into 3 locations of the number (6/5/4).
[Reference] The below figure shows the positional relation between the test sheet "CA-1" and the numbers corresponding to the
"Output Test Page" image of uneven density correction.

6)Check the entered values and then press "Store and Finish".
7) Output the test sheet "CA-1" in A3 full color and confirm the symptom does not occur any more.
If the symptom improved, go to the step 9).
If the symptom did not improve enough, add minus 15 to the value adjusted in the step 5) (e.g.: change the value -35 to -50).
If the effect on the symptom comes out excessively, then add plus 15 to the value adjusted in the step 5) (e.g.: change the value
-35 to -20).
In case that the colors and/or the locations (a and b) where the symptom is remarkable changed, then repeat the steps 3) to 7).

9
[Reference]
- There will be no harm to adjust 2 colors (Y+M, Y+C or M+C) or 3 colors (Y+M+C) at a time.
- The symptom will be almost improved within the adjustment range between "0" to "-70",.
8) Output the test sheet "CA-1" in A3 full color and confirm the symptom does not occur any more.
If the symptom does not improve, then revert all the parameters to "0" and try to check again the steps from 2) to 7).
If the symptom persists even after the above, then revert all the parameters to "0" and check other causes.
9
) Go to Settings/Registration > Adjustment/Maintenance > Adjust Image Quality > Auto Adjust Gradation > and execute Full Adjust
following the UI screen.

Marks of moisture bead on the second side due to condensation

in a low temperature high humidity environment

[Symptom]
If a device is used after being left in a low temperature high humidity environment for a certain period of time (a night), marks of
moisture bead [a] may appear on the second side of two-sided print.
The arrow [b] indicates the direction of feeding.

[Cause]
When the device is used after being left in a low temperature high humidity environment for a certain period of time (a night), the
guide assembly [a] is cooled before media passes here, so that condensation occurs due to the moisture vapor that is generated
when the media passes the fixing assembly.
When the double-sided print is passed, the first side is passed, and then the moisture beads of the guide assembly attach onto
the second side of the reversed media. This is how the aforementioned symptom occurs.
The following figure [A] shows a device connected with a 3 Way Unit and [B], without the said unit.

[Service work]
Choose and perform between the below a) and b).
a) Prevent the symptom by having the operator change the setting:
a-1) Go to Service mode > Mode List > COPIER > Option > DSPLY-SW > and change CLN-SEL to any of "1" to "3".
The range of setting is from "0" to "3" ("0" by default).
"Clean Condensation" will be displayed in Settings/Registration menu with the changed parameter.
a-2) When the relevant symptom has occurred or after leaving the device for a certain period of time (a night), have the customer
perform " Settings/Registration > Adjustment/Maintenance > Maintenance > Clean Condensation ".
[Reference] The cleaning time is approximate 1 minute with the parameter "1" / approx. 2 minutes with "2" / approx. 3 minutes
with "3".

11
b) Prevent the symptom by changing the service mode.
Go to Service Mode (Level 2) > Mode List > COPIER > Option > ENV-SET > and change LES-CNDS to "1" or"2".
The range of setting is from "0" to "2" ("0" by default).
Change of the parameter prevents moisture beads from attaching onto media.
- When a 3 Way Unit is installed, the media is always passed through the large path regardless of its size to avoid passing the
same through the guide assembly having moisture beads attached on it.
- When a 3 Way Unit is not installed, the fixing assembly is rotated for the predetermined duration before let the media passes
through not to allow moisture beads attach onto the guide assembly.
[Caution]
- When a 3 Way Unit is installed, the path after fixing the first side in double-sided mode is changed, therefore the productivity
with the sizes of the A4/LTR or smaller is slightly reduced.
- When a 3 Way Unit is not installed, the first sheet of output in double-sided mode takes approximately 30 seconds more time
with the parameter "1" / approx. 60 seconds more with "2".

Poor image which is round weak density / poor image which is

weak density band, they occur due to using left paper in a low-
humidity environment.

[Symptom]
Poor image which is round weak density [a] or poor image which is weak density band [b] may occur when a high density image
is printed out with the paper which is left outside of the machine in a low-humidity environment. Only one poor image occurs at
times, some poor images occur at other times.
The arrow [c] indicates the feed direction.

[Cause]
Electric resistance of the paper is higher because the paper is dehydrated by leaving in a low-humidity environment.
Electric resistance at the timing of the passing of 2nd-Side of a Double-Sided Print is higher because the moisture of the paper
is lost when the 1st Side is fixed.
Electric resistance of feeding roller is higher because moisture content in the air is low under the low-humidity environment.
Transferring of a high density image needs higher secondary transfer voltage than that of a low density image.
When the total electric resistance of the paper and the roller is higher than expected at the Secondary transfer Assembly, the
above symptom occurs because of insufficient secondary transfer voltage.
Especially when the 2nd-Side has high density image, the symptom is easy to occur.

[Service work]
[Reference]
Improving a state of preservation of paper may be effective in resolving a trouble in some cases.
Explain to a customer that unused or remaining paper should be stored by being covered with wrapping paper in a place avoiding
direct sunlight.

1) Increase the secondary transfer voltage by individual setting.

The secondary transfer voltage setting works only when all the conditions (mode/environment/paper type) registered beforehand
are met.
16 different patterns can be set from "TR-DUP1" to "TR-DUP16".
The below procedure is to set "TR-DUP1".
2) Go to Service mode (Level 2) > Mode List > COPIER > Adjust > HV-TR > and change the setting value of "TR-DUP1".
- If the symptom occurs in one-side mode, check if the value is "11".
- If the symptom occurs on the second side in auto 2-sided mode, change the value to "12".
- If the symptom occurs on the second side in multi-purpose tray 2-sided mode, change the value to "13".
The range of setting is from "11" to "43" ("11" by default).
3) Go to Service mode (Level 2) > Mode List > COPIER > Adjust > HV-TR > and confirm if the setting value of "TR-ENV1" is set
to "1".
The range of setting is from "1" to "3" ("1" by default).
4) Choose the appropriate value from among the below tables according to the used paper type and apply it to the setting value
of Service mode (Level 2) > Mode List > COPIER > Adjust > HV-TR > "TR-PPR1".
The range of setting is from "1" to "25" ("1" by default).

13
5) Go to Service mode (Level 2) > Mode List > COPIER > Adjust > HV-TR > and change the setting value of "TR-VL1" to "5".
The range of setting is from "-128" to "+127" ("0" by default).
Change the setting value by "1" changes the secondary transfer voltage 30V.
[Caution] Poor transfer may occur due to too high secondary transfer voltage if the setting value is changed.
6) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur.
If the symptom does not improve sufficiently, reduce the setting value in the step 5) by "5" at a time up to "30" until the symptom
improves enough.

Color displacement/ Density change/ 44 mm-interval lines on

image/ Margin displacement, due to movement of machine

[Symptom]
After a machine is moved, Color displacement [a], Density change [b], 44 mm-interval lines on image [c], or Margin displacement
[d] may occur.
The paper feed direction is indicated by [e].

[Cause]
- Upon movement of a machine, if the air pressure, temperature, or humidity suddenly changes, Color displacement or Density
change occurs.
- Upon movement of a machine, if the primary charging roller and the cleaning roller in the drum unit rub against each other, 44
mm-interval lines may appear on an image.
- After movement of a machine, if there is any change in levelness of the floor, Color displacement occurs or Margin displacement
occurs on the leading edge/ left edge.

Transfer Memory (Ghost)

[Symptom]
During printing text or lines of two solid colors (Red: Y+M/ Green: Y+C/ Blue: M+C), the background contained cyan halftone or
black halftone [A] when the drum had rotated one full turn (94mm), and white void ghost image [1] occurred in some instances.
In the combination of solid image of two colors and background color such as follows, the above mentioned symptom may occur.
- When there is text or a line of two solid colors (Red: Y+M) and also the background contains a cyan or black halftone.
- When there is text or a line of two solid colors (Green: Y+C) and also the background contains a black halftone.
- When there is text or a line of two solid colors (Blue: M+C) and also the background contains a black halftone.
Meanwhile, when the background contained cyan halftone or black halftone [A] after a full turn (94mm) of the drum with solid
white portion, a deep colored ghost image [2] occurred in some instances.
This symptom is less likely to occur when the background has no image [B] or is in high density [C].
The arrow [D] indicates the direction of feeding.

[Cause]
When paper is being fed, voltage is applied to the primary transfer roller. Thus, current flows from the primary transfer roller to
the drum.
The portion on the ITB where has a lot of toner such as two solid colors does not allow the current to flow easily from the primary
transfer roller to the drum as the toner works as resistance, on the other hand the portion where has a solid white image allows
the current to flow easily, so that there might be a difference between residual potentials on the drum depending upon the density
of image.
If there is a difference between residual potentials on the drum, the above mentioned symptom occurs after a full turn of the drum.

[Service Work]
1) Select Settings/Registration > Adjustment/Maintenance > Adjust Image Quality > Auto Adjust Gradation, and then press the
"Full Adjust" button.

17
2) Select a paper source of the paper type that needs to undergo the correction, and press "OK". According to the message
appearing on the screen, output a test print and scan it, and perform Full Adjust.
[Reference] The following shows recommended paper for Japan, USA, and Europe.
-JPN : CS680/68g [Nippon Paper]
-USA : Canon Multipurpose 20lb/75g [Domtar]
-EUR : Oce Red Label 80/80g [Mondi Business Paper]
3) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur. If the symptom no longer occurs,
the work is completed.
4) Identify the paper type with which the symptom occurs and change the setting value of the appropriate location from Service
Mode (Lv2) > Mode List > COPIER > Adjust > "EXP-LED" to "100".
- If the symptom occurs with paper of 105gsm or less, change the 4 parameters: PR-EXP-Y/ PR-EXP-M/ PR-EXP-C/ PR-EXP-
K.
- If the symptom occurs with paper of 106gsm or more, change the 4 parameters: PR-EXPY2/ PR-EXPM2/ PR-EXPC2/ PR-
EXPK2.
The range of setting is from "-100" to "+100" ("0" by default).
Raising the level of the parameters increases the light intensity of pre- exposure LED and evens out the residual potentials on
the drum.
[Caution] Change of the parameter may induce streaks in horizontal direction [a] on a halftone image caused by the drum. The
arrow [b] indicates the direction of feeding.

5) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur.

Right angle accuracy aberration on the trailing edge of paper

[Symptom]
Right angle accuracy aberration on the trailing edge of paper[a] / [b] may occur.
The arrow [c] indicates the direction of feeding.

[Cause]
Height of the front side and the rear side of Developing Assembly are not same, the way of passing though
When the height of the front side is lower, paper is difficult to pass though the front side than the rear side. Consequently, the
image of front side is reduced. [a]
When the height of the front side is higher, paper is easy to pass though the front side than the rear side. Consequently, the
image of front side is expanded. [b]

[Service work]
Perform Fixing alignment adjustment to align the height of the front side and the rear side of the Developing Assembly.
1) Open the Right Door, and lift up the Right Door [1], slide the Right Door Guide (Left) [2] and Right Door Guide (Right) [3] in

The marks caused by friction/Wrinkles on the second side of the

paper of duplex printing due to using thin paper

[Symptom]
In case of duplex printing using thin paper, the marks caused by friction of image [a] / [b] on the front /rear side edge of the second
side of paper or Wrinkles [c] on the center of paper may appear.
The arrow [d] indicates the direction of feeding.

[Cause]
Depending on the type of paper, Curl may be bigger even the temperature of fixing is the same.
If the paper has big Curl after fixing of the first side of the paper, the curl [b] touches the Tray Duct (Lower) [a] before the second
side of paper is entering fixing Nip, and then it makes transferred toner image scrambled. Consequently the marks caused by
friction appear.
If the paper having curled edge enters the fixing Nip, it causes Wrinkles on the page.

[Service work]
1) Set Service Mode > Mode List > COPIER > Option > IMG-FIX > TMP-TBL5 to "-2".
The range of setting is from "-2" to "+2" ("0" by default).
By changing the setting value, the setting temperature during passing Thin paper (52 to 63gsm) falls.
2) Set Service Mode > Mode List > COPIER > Option > IMG-FIX > FXS-TMP5 to "-2".
The range of setting is from "-2" to "+2" ("0" by default).
By changing the setting value, the setting temperature at the start of passing Thin paper (52 to 63gsm) falls.
3) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur. If the symptom no longer occurs,
the work is completed.
If the improvement of the symptom is not enough, go to step 4).
4) Set Service Mode (Lv2) > Mode List > COPIER > Option > IMG-FIX > FX-WNKL to "2".
The range of setting is from "0" to "+2" ("0" by default).

27
By changing the setting value, make the duration of initial rotation longer to raise the temperature of Fixing Film edge on using
Thin paper (52 to 63gsm).
[Caution] By changing the setting value to "2", it takes extra 60 seconds to start printing on using Thin paper (52 to 63gsm).
5) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur. If the symptom no longer occurs,
the work is completed.
If the improvement of the symptom is not enough, go to step 6).

White Line appearing in sub scanning direction on image due to

fluff adhered to the laser exposure path or waviness of Developing
Unit sheet

[Symptom]
A sharp white line [a] may appear in the sub scanning direction on an image.
The arrow [b] indicates the direction of feeding.

[Cause]
If fluffy foreign matter is adhered to the laser exposure path which is located between the Laser Scanner Unit and the Developing
Unit or if the Developing Unit sheet is wavy, the laser light is blocked and a latent image cannot be formed. As a result, the
symptom occurs.

[Service work]
1) Open the Front Cover of the machine, and open the Drum Unit Retaining Cover [1] of the color in question.

2) Hold the light-blue [A] part, and pull out the Drum Unit [1].

32
[Caution]
- If you perform the work in sleep mode or when the power is turned OFF during sleep mode, the Primary Transfer Roller will not
be disengaged.
When removing the Drum Unit (Bk), be sure to do so after returning the machine to a standby state.
- Since there is a risk of damaging the Photosensitive Drum, do not touch the surface.
- Be sure to block light to the removed Drum Unit using paper, otherwise it will be exposed to light.
3) Remove the screw [1].

4) Pull out the Developing Unit [1] up to the position [a]. Disconnect the connector [2] and put it in the groove [3] for the cover.
Pull out the Developing Unit while lifting it.

5) Check the surroundings of the Developing Unit.

If fluffy foreign matter is adhered around the Developing Unit sleeve [a], remove the foreign matter.
[Caution] When removing the foreign matter, be careful not to touch the surface of the sleeve.
If the Developing Unit sheet [a] is wavy, replace the Developing Unit.

33
If fluffy foreign matter is adhered to the hole [b], which the laser light passes through, under the Developing Unit, remove the
foreign matter.

6) Install the parts by reversing the procedure from step 4).

7) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur.
If the symptom does not improve, check other causes.

Coarse image from the leading edge to about 70mm from the
trailing edge of paper

[Symptom]
Coarse image [a] may occur from the leading edge to around 70mm from the trailing edge of paper with a Bk halftone image
under high temperature and high humidity environment.
A phenomenon becomes easy to be seen by the coated paper with the smooth surface.
The arrow [b] indicates the feed direction.

[Cause]
While the trailing edge of the paper passes through the registration roller, if the same paper is slipped slightly at the nip of the
secondary transfer roller, the behavior of paper becomes unstable.
At this time, if the paper comes in contact with the ITB that is located in upstream of the secondary transfer roller, the toner image
on ITB is deranged and the above mentioned symptom occurs.
Under high temperature and high humidity environment, if the speed of the registration roller is higher than that of the secondary
transfer roller and the paper is fed in a sort of pushing manner, the behavior of the paper becomes unstable and likely to have
the symptom.

[Service work]
1) Go to Service mode > Mode List > COPIER > Adjust > FEED-ADJ > and change the setting value of "REG-SPD" to "-1".
The range of setting is from "-5" to "5" ("0" by default).
[Caution] The speed of registration may slow down and the magnification of the sub-scanning (the feed direction) slightly becomes
smaller with this change of the setting.
2) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur.
If the symptom does not improve sufficiently, reduce the setting value in the step 1) by "1" at a time down to "-5" until the symptom
improves enough.

Image blanking on the leading edge of sheet with heavy paper

under a low temperature environment

[Symptom]
When a heavy paper is used under a low temperature environment, image blanking [a] may occur on the leading edge.
This symptom does not occur when the leading edge margin is 4mm or more.
The arrow [b] indicates the direction of feeding.

[Cause]
If feeding hard heavy paper into machine, a tiny space may be formed between the trailing edge of paper just in front of the nip
of the secondary transfer roller and ITB as the paper [a] presses ITB [b] toward inside while being fed.
If electricity is discharged in this space, polarity of toner on ITB changes and the toner will not be transferred onto the paper. This
results in the above mentioned symptom. This symptom is likely to occur in a low humidity environment where the set value of
the secondary transfer voltage is high.

[Service work]
Choose and perform among the below a), b) and c) according to the conditions under which the customer is operating.
a) Widen the leading edge margin of the sheet
a-1) Increase the setting value of Service mode > Mode List > COPIER > Adjust > BLANK > [BLANK-T].
Change of the adjustment value by "1" increases the leading edge margin of the sheet 0.04mm.
The range of setting is from "0" to "1000"
[Caution] Change of the setting increases the trailing edge margins of all the output.
a-2) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur.
If the symptom has not improved sufficiently, fine-tune the setting values in the steps a-1)

b) Extend the range where leading edge weak bias is applied.

b-1) Increase the setting value of Service mode (Lv2) > Mode List > COPIER > Adjust > HV-TR > [T2TR-LNG].
Change of the adjustment value by "1" extends the range where leading edge weak bias is applied 0.1mm.
The range of setting is from "-100" to "+100" ("0" by default).

36
[Caution] The change of this setting that lowers the secondary transfer voltage of the paper leading edge part (the range of
correction amount) of all the output sheets may result in a mottling image with a high density image.
b-2) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur.
If the symptom has not improved sufficiently, fine-tune the setting values in the steps b-1)

c) Lower the secondary transfer voltage applied to leading edge with customized settings.
The secondary transfer voltage setting works only when all the conditions (mode/environment/paper type) registered beforehand
are met.
16 different patterns can be set from "TR-DUP1" to "TR-DUP16".
The below procedure is to set "TR-DUP1".
c-1) Go to Service mode (Level 2) > Mode List > COPIER > Adjust > HV-TR > and change the setting value of "TR-DUP1".
- If the symptom occurs in 1-sided mode, change the value to "31".
- If the symptom occurs on the second side in auto 2-sided mode, change the value to "32".
- If the symptom occurs on the second side in multi-purpose tray 2-sided mode, change the value to "33".
The range of setting is from "11" to "43" ("11" by default).
c-2) Go to Service mode (Level 2) > Mode List > COPIER > Adjust > HV-TR > and change the setting value of " TR-ENV1".
- If the issue occurs in a low humidity environment (under 6.11g/m3), make sure that the value is set to "1".
- If the issue occurs in a normal humidity environment (from 6.12 to 15.68g/m3), make sure that the value is set to "2".
- If the issue occurs in a high humidity environment (over 15.69g/m3), make sure that the value is set to"3".
The range of setting is from "1" to "3" ("1" by default).
[Reference] Absolute moisture content (g/m3) can be checked in Service Mode > Mode List > COPIER > Display > ANALOG >
"ABS-HUM".
c-3) Choose the appropriate value from among the below tables according to the used paper type and apply it to the setting value
of Service mode (Level 2) > Mode List > COPIER > Adjust > HV-TR > "TR-PPR1".

[Caution] The secondary transfer voltage of the paper leading edge part is lowered and a mottling image may occur with a high
density image.
If the symptom does not improve sufficiently, reduce the setting value in the step c-4) by "5" at a time down to "-30" until the
symptom improves enough.

The marks caused by friction on the second side of the paper of

duplex printing

[Symptom]
In case of duplex printing, the marks caused by friction of image [a] / [b] on the front /rear side edge of the second side of paper
may appear.
The arrow [c] indicates the direction of feeding.
This symptom is likely to occur with a paper has been left in a high humidity environment.

[Cause]
If the paper is curled largely after the fixing for the first side, the behavior of the second side of the paper goes unstable between
the secondary transfer assembly and the fixing nip, and the paper can be twisted or forming an inverted curl while being fed.
If the unfixed portion of the twisted/inverted curled sheet friction on the fixing film, the aforementioned symptom occurs.

[Service work]
[Reference]
Improving a state of preservation of paper may be effective in resolving a trouble in some cases.
Explain to a customer that unused or remaining paper should be stored by being covered with wrapping paper in a place avoiding
direct sunlight.

1) If the device is used in a high humidity environment, turn the dehumidifier switch ON.
The cassette heater is turned on and prevents the paper from absorbing moisture.

2) Identify the paper type with which the symptom occurs and change the setting value of the appropriate location from Service
Mode > Mode List > COPIER > "Option" to "-1".
-Plain paper 1 (64 to 75 gsm): CUSTOM > Change "TMP-TBL".
-Plain paper 2 (76 to 90 gsm): IMG-FIX > Change "TMP-TBL7".

38
-Recycled paper 1 (64 to 75 gsm): IMG-FIX > Change "TMP-TB11".
-Recycled paper 2 (76 to 90 gsm): IMG-FIX > Change "TMP-TB13".
The range of setting is from "-2" to "+2" ("0" by default).
Change of the setting value by "1" lowers the fixing control temperature 5 degrees Celsius, so that the curl is reduced.
[Reference] If the symptom occurs with a thin paper (52 to 63 gsm), handle the issue by referring to FAQ "The marks caused by
friction/Wrinkles on the second side of the paper of duplex printing due to using thin paper".
3) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur.
If the symptom does not improve sufficiently, then change the setting value in the step 2) to "-2".
[Caution] Change of the setting lowers the fixing control temperature and poor fixing may occur.
4) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur.

Uneven density at 15.5mm intervals

[Symptom]
When a paper of 106gsm or more is used, uneven density at 15.5mm intervals [a] may occur on a high density image.
The arrow [b] indicates the direction of feeding.

[Cause]
If the developing cylinder [a] inside the developing unit is minutely eccentric, the distance between the developing cylinder and
the drum [b] gyrates and the above mentioned symptom occurs.

[Service work]
1) Go to Service mode (Lv2) > Mode List > COPIER > Option > IMG-DEV > and change the setting value of "ADJ-VPPN" to "1".
The range of setting is from "-1" to "4" ("0" by default).
Increment the developing AC bias by 100V by changing the parameter.
[CAUTION] Increment of the parameter may generate image fogging, ring marks and uneven density at 15.5mm on a halftone
image.
2) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur.
If the improvement of the symptom is not good enough, inclement the parameter of the step 1) by "1" at a time up to when it
reaches "+4" and see how the result is.
3) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur.
If the symptom does not improve, revert the parameter of the step 1) to its original value and check other causes.

Density level difference due to the image Fogging of yellow solid

image

[Symptom]
Density level difference may occur around 34 mm [a] or around 94 mm [b] of the leading edge of media after continuous paper
passing of 150 sheets (A4/LTR size conversion) or more a day, when using heavy paper or coated paper with yellow solid image.
The symptom may occur around 94 mm [b] of leading edge of media when passing 1 piece of paper. The symptom may occur
between about 34 mm [a] or about 94 mm [b] of the leading edge of the media when passing paper continuously.
The symptom does not occur under the following condition, 105 gsm or less paper/other colors (magenta, cyan, black)/halftone
image.
The arrow [c] indicates the direction of feeding.

[Cause]
When 150 sheets (A4/LTR size conversion) or more sheets are passed a day, Pre-exposure LED may not light up depending on
output image. In this case, it is difficult to remove the residual potential of drum.
When there is a portion having toner a lot on ITB, like a solid image on ITB, the toner becomes a resistance and it is difficult for
electrical current to flow from Primary Transfer Roller to the drum. Therefore solid image has more residual potential and the
amount of image Fogging on the drum after transferring increase.
Where there is no paper (between papers) has less residual potential, it makes difference of amount of image
Fogging on the drum. That results in the above symptom.
- The symptom occurs after the drum of paper leading edge rotates 1 round (around 94 mm [b] of the leading edge of media)
when passing 1 piece of paper.
- The symptom may occurs after the drum of the tailing edge of the previous media and after 1 round rotating of the drum for the
leading edge of media (between about 34 mm [a] or about 94 mm [b] of leading edge ) when passing paper continuously.

[Service work]
1) Go to Service mode (Lv2) > Mode List > COPIER > Option > FNC-SW > and change the setting value of "PREXP-SW" to "1".
The range of setting is from "0" to "3" ("0" by default).
Changing the setting value allows to light up Pre-exposure LED always.
[Caution] Change of the parameter may induce streaks in horizontal direction [a] on a halftone image caused by the drum. The
arrow [b] indicates the direction of feeding.

41
2) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur.

Coarse image due to a consecutive paper passing with a low

density image in a low humidity environment

[Symptom]
Coarse image [a] may appear on the output of halftone image after a consecutive paper passing of 1,000 sheets or more with a
low density image in a low humidity environment.

[Cause]
A consecutive paper passing raises the temperature inside the developing assembly.
If paper is passed with a low density image, same toner is stirred repeatedly as the toner consumption is low.
If same toner is stirred repeatedly in a low humidity environment, the toner has an inclination to deteriorate.
If some of the above mentioned conditions are met at a time, the increased damage to toner and the reduced capability of transfer
brings the aforementioned symptom.

[Service work]
[Reference] In a consecutive running of device, giving a downtime of 15 minutes or more for every 1,000 sheets production
subsides the generation of the symptom.
Explain to the customer as a effective measure to improve the trouble.

1) Identify the color with which the symptom occurs and change the setting value of the appropriate location from Service Mode
(Lv2) > Mode List > COPIER > Adjust >" DENS" to "+2".
- If the symptom occurs with yellow, change the 2 points: "HLMT-PTY" and "LLMT-PTY".
- If the symptom occurs with magenta, change the2 points: "HLMT-PTM" and "LLMT-PTM".
- If the symptom occurs with cyan, change the2 points: "HLMT-PTC" and "LLMT-PTC".
- If the symptom occurs with black, change the2 points: "HLMT-PTK" and "LLMT-PTK".
The range of setting is from "-4" to "+4" ("0" by default).
Change of the parameter raises the toner density target of the toner density sensor.
[CAUTION] Change of the parameter to "+2" may induce image fogging, spots in high density and ghost attributed to the
developing cylinder inside the developing assembly.
2) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur.
If the symptom does not improve, check other causes.

White spots on high density image due to soiling of primary

charging roller

[Symptom]
When printing a large volume in high temperature/high humidity environment, white spots [a] may occur in high density area near
the edge of paper.
The arrow [b] indicates the direction of feeding.

[Cause]
Remaining toner attached on the drum [a] may pass the cleaning blade [c] and attach to primary charging roller [b]. If the remaining
toner attaches to primary charging roller, an abnormal discharge may occur from the primary charging roller to the drum.
The symptom tends to occur more when meeting both conditions below.
- Internal temperature of machine increased after continuous printing in high temperature/high humidity environment.
-An amount of remaining toner attached to the drum increased by printing high density images.

[Service work]
1) Select Settings/Registration > Adjustment/Maintenance > Maintenance > Clean Inside Main unit [1], and press "Start" button
[2].

44
[Reference] The cleaning takes about 80 sec.
2) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur.
If the improvement of the symptom is not sufficient, a couple of implementations of Procedure 1) are required.
3) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur.
If the symptom does not improve, check other causes.

Faint small text/thin line in black during printing

[Symptom]
When a printout is made, the symptom, Faint small text and thin line in black, may occur.

[Cause]
This machine reliably reproduces drawing data of small text and thin line.
When the fonts for small text and thin line are printed, they tend to appear thinner/fainter than those printed from other models.
This results in the symptom.

[Service work]
[Caution] Changing the setting value in the following procedure somewhat increases the black toner consumption.
1) In Service Mode (Level2) > Mode List > COPIER > Option > IMG-MCON > PSCL-TBL, change the setting value to "1." Then
turn OFF/ON the main power switch.
The range of setting is from "0" to "1" ("0" by default).
By changing the setting value, the parameters of auto gradation adjustment are adjusted so that only the density of Black is
increased.
2) Select Settings/Registration > Adjustment/Maintenance > Adjust Image Quality > Auto Adjust Gradation [1] , and then press
the "Full Adjust" button [2] .

3) Select a paper source of the paper type that needs to undergo the correction, and press "OK". According to the message
appearing on the screen, output a test print and scan it, and perform Full Adjust.
[Reference] The following shows recommended paper for Japan, USA, and Europe.
-JPN : CS680/68g [Nippon Paper]
-USA : Canon Multipurpose 20lb/75g [Domtar]
-EUR : Oce Red Label 80/80g [Mondi Business Paper]
4) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur. If the symptom no longer occurs,
the work is completed.
If the improvement of the symptom is not enough, go to step 5).
5) Go to Service mode > Mode List > COPIER > Adjust > DENS > and change the setting value of "DMAX-K" to "+128".
The range of setting is from "-128" to "+128" ("0" by default).
Changing the setting value increases the black density target for Laser Power Correction (D-max) Control.
[Caution] Changing the setting value may reduce the fixing performance.
6) Perform Auto Adjust Gradation in steps 2) to 3).
7) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur.
If the symptom does not improve in black solid text and thin line, check for other factors.
If the symptom does not improve in text in Middle density range for Black, go to step 8).
8) Select Settings/Registration > Function Settings > Printer > Printer Settings > Custom Settings > Print Quality > Density (Fine
Adjust) > Black [1].

46
[Reference] In Settings/Registration > Function Settings > Printer > Printer Settings > Custom Settings > Print Quality, only if

Thin fine line/ Vertical white line in HT image upon printing

[Symptom]
When a printout is made, a thin fine line [a] may appear, or a vertical white line [b] may appear in a halftone image.

[Cause]
If some of fine lines radiating in all directions form an angle that does not match the image control on the machine, a thin fine line
appears.
If HT image data [a] of regularly arranged small dots is used, a white line appears in a halftone image due to inconsistency with
the image control.

[Service work]
1) Change the printer driver setting: "Finishing Tab > Advanced Settings > Special Smoothing Mode."
Changing the setting changes the image control on the machine.

Depending on an occurring symptom, choose a) or b) and change the setting.

a) If a thin fine line appears, change Special Smoothing Mode to "Mode 5."

48
b) If a vertical white line appears, change Special Smoothing Mode to either "Mode 5" or "Mode 6."
2) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur.
If the symptom does not improve, check other causes.

Smeared fine lines when scanning original at ADF due to dust

detection correction control failure

[Symptom]
When the original [A] where fine lines are drawn with small spacing in between is scanned at ADF in the original feed direction
[a], the print outcome may look like the image [B] in rare cases where the opening between lines is smeared. This symptom does
not occur when the original is scanned on the copyboard.

[Cause]
Dust detection correction control refers to pixel of the surrounding area when making correction. In this case, the control operates
based on the fine lines, resulting in the above symptom.

[Service work]
Dust detection level adjustment when using ADF : Service Mode (Level1): COPIER > OPTION > IMG-RDR > DFDST-L1,L2
(Default:200) and DF2DSTL1,L2 (Default:200). Set value of them to 0.
[Caution] By setting the value to 0, no control will be in place and black lines are more likely to occur if any dust gets on the reading
glass.
[Note] Depending on the model, some Service Mode options for detection level adjustment when using ADF are not available.

Uneven density image due to dew condensation under a high

humidity environment

[Symptom]
Uneven density image like the one shown in the below picture [A] may occur. The picture [B] shows the normal image and the
arrow indicates the paper feed direction.
[Reference] One or more of the following symptoms may occur: Vertical lines, diagonal lines, light image on both edges and toner
carrier on print. The picture [A] shows the image with all of the symptoms above combined.

[Cause]
When the device is installed in a high humidity environment, the drum and the charging roller absorb moisture and dew
condensation is generated on the surface of the drum. Printing in this condition brings the above symptom.
[Reference] The symptom also occurs when a drum cartridge with its sealing opened and had been left under a high humidity
environment is installed to the device and used.

[Service work]
When the aforementioned symptom has occurred, execute the following "Clean Condensation" mode. This cleaning mode was
added from the DC-CON Ver.12.02 onward.
This mode removes the dew condensation attached on the surface of the drum.
1) Confirm if the version of the DC-CON is Ver.12.02 or later. If the version is older than that, execute upgrading the version.
2) In Service Mode > COPIER > OPTION > DSPLY-SW > CLN-SEL, set the value to "1". (Default is "0".)
[Reference] By changing the above setting, "Clean Condensation" is displayed in the menu under the control panel.
3) User Mode > Adjustment/Maintenance > Maintenance > Clean Condensation > Press "Start" to execute the mode.

4) Make a test print after the cleaning and make sure that the symptom does not occur.
5) If the symptom has not improved, repeat the" Clean Condensation" process three to four times while keeping the value "1" set
in the step 2).

Misalignment of the delivered stack due to the use of curled paper

that was curled after having been left in a high humidity
environment

[Symptom]
If the paper that had been left in a high humidity environment is used, misalignment of the stack of paper may occur because of
the curled sheet.

[Cause]
The moisture contained in the paper that had been left in a high humidity environment is lost rapidly after the same paper passes
through the fixing assembly. Therefore this paper may be curled severely.
The curled sheet [a] is pushed out by the following sheet [b], and this forms the aforementioned symptom.

[Service work]
[Reference]
Improving a state of preservation of paper may be effective in resolving a trouble in some cases.
Explain to a customer that unused or remaining paper should be stored by being covered with wrapping paper in a place avoiding
direct sunlight.

Choose and perform between the below a) and b).

a) Use the device after turning the dehumidification switch on.
The cassette heater is turned on and prevents the paper from absorbing moisture.

b) Change the fixing temperature control temperature.

b-1) Identify the paper type with which the symptom occurs and change the setting value of the appropriate location from Service
Mode > Mode List > COPIER > "Option" to "-1".
-Thin paper (52 to 63 gsm): IMG-FIX > Change " TMP-TBL5".

57
-Plain paper 1 (64 to 75 gsm): CUSTOM > Change "TMP-TBL".
-Plain paper 2 (76 to 90 gsm): IMG-FIX > Change "TMP-TBL7".
-Recycled paper 1 (64 to 75 gsm): IMG-FIX > Change "TMP-TB11".
-Recycled paper 2 (76 to 90 gsm): IMG-FIX > Change "TMP-TB13".
The range of setting is from "-2" to "+2" ("0" by default).
Change of the setting value by "1" lowers the fixing control temperature 5 degrees Celsius, so that the curl is reduced.
b-2) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur.
If the symptom does not improve sufficiently, then change the setting value in the step b-1) to "-2".
[Caution] Change of the setting lowers the fixing control temperature and poor fixing may occur.
b-3) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur.
If the symptom does not improve, revert the parameter of the fixing temperature control temperature to the former value and
perform the procedure a).

Dog-eared corner of the leading edge of paper due to the curl

[Symptom]
A corner of the leading edge of paper may be folded down due to the curled paper of 80gsm or lighter.

[Cause]
Being subject to the property of the paper itself, the curl [a] at the corner of the front or rear side of the leading edge of paper may
sporadically become large after passing the fixing assembly depending on the type of paper.
If the corner curls severely, it gets stuck with the guide [b] of the flapper after fixing and the above mentioned symptom occurs.

[Service work]
1) Identify the paper type with which the symptom occurs and change the setting value of the appropriate location from Service
Mode > Mode List > COPIER > "Option" to "-1".
-Thin paper (52 to 63 gsm): IMG-FIX > Change " TMP-TBL5".
2) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur.
If the symptom does not improve sufficiently, then change the setting value in the step 1) to "-2".
[Caution] Change of the setting lowers the fixing control temperature and poor fixing may occur.
3) Output the image having shown the symptom, and check that the symptom does not occur.

Poor stacking/wrinkles/tear of paper due to inappropriate position

of the aligning plate of the processing tray unit (Inner Finisher-G1/
H1)

[Symptom]
When taking copy with single sheet output using inner finisher, this may lead to a poor stacking [A] or wrinkles/tear [B] at the
center of the trailing edge of paper due to unfinished delivery of paper to the tray.
The arrow [a] indicates the direction of feeding.

[Cause]
A poor adjustment of the aligning plate of the processing tray unit encumbers a proper delivery of paper and this ends in the
aforementioned symptom.

[Service work]
When the above mentioned symptom has occurred, adjust the width of the aligning plate following the procedure below.
1) Select the paper to be set in the processing tray unit from Service Mode.
In case of A4 size : Service mode > SORTER > ADJUST > INF-ALG1
In case of LTR size : Service mode > SORTER > ADJUST > INF-ALG2
[Note] The paper size used for the width adjustment of the alignment plate is A4 size or LTR size.
2) Enter -50 in the section for entering the adjusted value [a] of the target paper and press OK [b] (the image below is the case
of A4)

[Note] This operation stops the alignment plate at the alignment position +5.0mm.
3) Set one sheet of paper [1] in the processing tray unit, fit it to the edge [b] of the rear alignment plate [2], and then measure the
gap [a] between the edge of the front alignment plate [3] and the paper with a scale.

62
[Note] Since the alignment plate is installed a bit tilting toward the delivery direction, set the paper to be fitted to the edge (on the
delivery side).

4) Enter the gap value measured in the above step 3) in the calculation formula below, enter the calculated adjusted value [a]
and press OK [b].
Adjusted value = gap (mm) x 10 - 50

Though paper is loaded in the cassette, the display of the message

"load paper of the drawer." may occur due to the disconnection
of the connector.

[Symptom]
The message "Load paper" may be displayed (a) on UI screen of the main body with the paper loaded in the cassette.

[Cause]
The size detection switches attached to each cassette detects paper size and whether paper is loaded in the cassette or not. If
any connector of the following cassettes is disconnected, the size detection switch will not be turned on even when the cassette
is inserted and the device regards it as the cassette is not inserted and displays the message "Load paper".
- Cassette 1:J1222 of Cassette 1 Size Switch [a]
- Cassette 2:J1221 of Cassette 2 size switch A [b]

- Cassette 3:J1136 of Cassette 3 size switch A [c] and J603 of Deck driver PCB [d] of the back side of the cassette pedestal
- Cassette 4:J1139 of Cassette 4 size switch A [e]

[Service work]

65
1) According to the location where the symptom occurred, check disconnection of the connector for an appropriate cassette from
among a) to d).
If no connector is disconnected, check other factors (disconnection of cable and unit etc.)
a) If "Load paper" is displayed to the cassette 1, check J1222 of the cassette 1 size switch.
b) If "Load paper" is displayed to the cassette 2, check J1221 of the cassette 2 size switch A.
c) If "Load paper" is displayed to the cassette 3
c-1) Check J1136 of the cassette 3 size switch A.
c-2) Check J603 of Deck driver PCB.

"The original scanning area is dirty." is displayed due to poor

adjustment

[Symptom]
" The original scanning area is dirty." may be displayed when an original is scanned from ADF.

[Cause]
If the adjustment of left (right) hinge height for the ADF is not proper, the document glass spacers do not come in contact with
the document glass.
When the document glass spacers are in the above state, the original in the ADF is scanned in the state of keeping afloat from
the proper scanning position. Therefore the image becomes darker and the dark part is wrongly detected as dust. That results in
the above symptom.

[Service work]
1) Check whether the rear-left side [a] and front-left side [b] document glass spacers are in close contact with the document glass
when the ADF is closed.
Cut a sheet of plain paper with a weight of around 80gsm to make a paper slip with a width of 45 mm, then use it to check the
height.

a) Check the rear-left height.

a-1) Set paper [a] against the protrusions of the stream reading glass [b] in such a manner that the sheet of the stream reading
glass [c] is nearly hidden.
[Caution] Set paper so that it does not reach the document reader [d].

a-2) Pull out the set paper in the direction of the arrow to check that slight resistance is felt.

67
b) Check the front-left height.
b-1) Set paper [a] against the protrusions of the stream reading glass [b] in such a manner that the sheet of the stream reading
glass [c] is nearly hidden.
[Caution] Set paper so that it does not reach the document reader [d].

b-2) Pull out the set paper in the direction of the arrow to check that slight resistance is felt.

2) Adjust the height with the left hinge height adjusting screw [b].
- When the front-left side of ADF does not come in contact with the document glass, turn the adjusting screw clockwise.
- When the rear-left side or the both side of ADF do not come in contact with the document glass, turn the adjusting screw
counterclockwise.
[Caution] Loosen the lock nut [a] before adjustment, and tighten it after adjustment.

68
3) Close ADF to check visually whether the white plate [a] comes in contact with the doucument glass [b].

When the white plate does not come in contact with the document glass, proceed to step 4).
When the white plate comes in contact with the document glass, proceed to step 6).
4) Adjust the height with the right hinge height adjusting screw [b].
- Turning the adjusting screw clockwise reduces the front-right side height of ADF.
- Turning the adjusting screw counterclockwise increases the front-right side height of ADF.
[Caution] Loosen the lock nut [a] before adjustment, and tighten it after adjustment.

5) Check/adjust the heights of left and right hinges again.

6) Scan the original from ADF, and check that the symptom does not occur.
If the symptom does not improve, check other causes.

"Place the originals again." is displayed after starting to copy with

the copy board.

[Symptom]
"Place the originals again." may be displayed repeatedly after putting the original on the copy board to copy without using ADF.

[Cause]
The sensor flag [b] of the Document set sensor moves to the position of sensor ON when ADF is opened vertically.
If the main body is turned ON in a state of opening ADF vertically during returning from sleep (starting up reader/ADF) or in a
state of keeping ADF open vertically, the Document set sensor turned on and it recognizes that an original is in the ADF ("Finishing"
inverts in yellow)[C].

Even the ADF is closed, the control information of booting reader/ADF is still left and the state does not shift to "No original".
Consequently the above mentioned symptom occurs because the device tries to feed the original from the ADF to copy while the
original is placed on the copy board.
The symptom will occur again and again when you try to copy as long as the control information of booting reader/ADF is left.
[Reference] Please open the ADF vertically after displaying [COPY] on the UI. The occurrence of the symptom can be avoided.

[Service work]
Choose the Step A) or B) according to the availability of turning OFF the main power.
A) When the main power cannot be turned OFF, execute the following step.
A-1) Close the ADF and place a paper on the ADF original tray and then take off the paper after the LED (green color) lights [a]
to confirm that the UI screen state changes to "No original" ("Finishing" does not invert in yellow)[b].
[Reference] The copying of the original is possible by moving the original from the copy board to the ADF original tray.

70
B) When the main power can be turned OFF, execute the following step.
B-1) Close the ADF and then turn OFF/ON the main power.
[Caution] Do not open the ADF vertically until "COPY" is displayed on the UI screen.

The waste toner assembly cover does not open when the packing
tape is removed

[Symptom]
The waste toner assembly cover may not open when the packing tape is removed.

[Cause]
If the waste toner container is pulled to the left side with the packing tape, the gap [1] is narrowed between the waste toner
container and the rib that prevents attaching the waste toner container other way round.
When the gap is too narrow, the claw of the waste toner assembly cover [2] comes in contact with the waste toner container and
its rib, this makes difficult to open the cover and ends in the above mentioned symptom.

[Service work]
1) Remove the packing tape affixed at the left side of the main body on the waste toner container halfway [1] and open the waste
toner assembly cover [2].

2) Remove the packing tape all the way.

The primary transfer roller drive coupling is coming off and

breaking due to interfering with the sheet metal of the main body

[Symptom]
Primary transfer roller drive coupling [1] may come off [A] or break [B] when removing the main drive assembly from the main
body.

[Cause]
The above symptom occurs because sheet metal of back of the main body and the primary transfer roller drive coupling interfere
with each other when removing the main drive assembly.

[Service work]
Follow the steps below when removing the main drive assembly.
Coupling set (FM1-M652-000) is newly set up as service part. It consists of the following components.
• Coupling [1]
• Compression spring [2]

1) Move the main drive assembly in a horizontal direction 10mm - 15mm so that the primary transfer roller drive coupling can be
removed from the main body.
2) Remove the main drive assembly by lifting the bottom.

3) If the primary transfer roller drive coupling comes off, insert the spring [2] into the gear [1] and attach the transfer coupling [3]
[A]. If the coupling is broken, prepare a coupling set (FM1-M652-000) and replace with a new coupling. It goes the same if the

73
spring is broken or missing. After the primary transfer roller drive coupling is attached, push it with a finger to make sure it moves
up and down smoothly. [B]

[Note] There are thick claw [a] and thin claw [b] on the gear, and there are thick groove [c] and thin groove [d] on the primary
transfer roller drive coupling. When attaching the primary transfer roller drive coupling to the gear, insert the thick claw [a] into
the thick groove [c] and thin claw [b] into the thin groove [d].

Breakage of the boss of the idler gear due to wrongly assembled

pick-up roller

[Symptom]
Boss of the idler gear [1] located between the pick-up roller shaft [2] and the feed roller shaft [3] in cassette pick-up assembly
may break.

[Cause]
When the paper cassette is pulled out and pushed in with the wrongly assembled pick-up roller, the paper cassette interferes
with the pick-up roller causing the pick-up roller to interfere with the idler gear, resulting in the above symptom.

[Service work]
When installing a pick-up roller, be sure that the pick-up roller shaft sticks out of the pick-up roller [a].
Fig. [A], the pick-up roller is properly installed.
Fig. [B], the pick-up roller is improperly installed. The two securing nails are not properly engaged [b].
[Note] Even when the two nails are not properly engaged, it may feel like the pick-up roller "clicks". This is because a part of the
securing nails clicks.

Safety cover coming off of Tray 1 due to the safety cover being
pressed hard to the rear side or downward (Saddle/Staple/
Booklet/Finisher)

[Symptom]
On the main bodies earlier than the following countermeasure cut-in serial numbers in factory, the safety cover [1] may come off
of Tray 1.

[Cause]
When the safety cover [1] is pressed hard to the direction of the arrow (rear side or downward), the above symptom occurs.

81
[Service work]
When the safety cover comes off, re-attach it following the steps below. Depending on the product, the attaching way shall be
selected from the following 2 procedures.
1) For Finisher -AA1, Saddle finisher-AA2, Staple/Booklet finisher -B1/L1/T1
2) For Staple/Booklet finisher-C1/J1/U1

1) For Finisher-AA1, Saddle finisher-AA2, Staple/Booklet finisher-B1/L1/T1

1-1) Open the front door [1] and remove the clip [2].
1-2) Lift the front door [1] to remove. (Left figure is Booklet Finisher, Right figure is Staple Finisher.)

Measures when paper is not stapled (corner/double) after

installation (Inner Finisher-G1/H1/K1)

[Symptom]
In operation of stapling (corner/double) after installation of Inner Finisher, paper may not be stapled.

[Cause]
When installing Inner Finisher, distortion may occur in Inner Finisher.
If the center return belt guide [1] on the front side slips into the edge of the assist unit sheet metal [2] due to this distortion, paper
in staple operation is caught on by the center return belt guide and is not fed up to the stapling position, resulting in the above-
mentioned symptom.

[Service work]
If the above-mentioned symptom occurs, remove the center return belt guide from slipping into state.
1) Insert approx. 20 sheets of A4 or LTR-size plain paper [1] through the delivery outlet [2] of Inner Finisher up to position [a] in
the arrow direction.

[Reference] If the paper retainer [1] blocks the delivery outlet, move the paper retainer in the arrow direction manually.

96
2) Remove the paper from the delivery outlet of Inner Finisher and perform stapling (corner/double) operation to check that the
symptom no longer occurs.
If the symptom does not improve, then check other factors.

Noise (grinding-like noise) from the right rear side of Main Body

[Symptom]
When paper is being fed, noise (grinding-like noise) may occur from around the right rear side [a] of the Main Body.

[Cause]
If the Paper Pick-up Drive Assembly is deformed and installed, the gears in the Paper Pick-up Drive Assembly and the Vertical
Path Drive Assembly may not be engaged properly.
If the gears rotate in this state, the symptom occurs.

[Service work]
1) Remove the Right Door Unit, by referring to Service Manual "Disassembly/Assembly > Pickup/Feed System > Removing the
Right Door Unit."
2) Remove the Cassette 1 Pickup Unit, by referring to Service Manual "Disassembly/Assembly > Pickup/Feed System > Removing
the Cassette 1 Pickup Unit."
3) Remove the Cassette 2 Pickup Unit, by referring to Service Manual "Disassembly/Assembly > Pickup/Feed System > Removing
the Cassette 2 Pickup Unit."
4) Remove the 2 screws and the Cover (Rear Upper).
5) Remove the 2 screws and the Cover (Rear Lower).
6) Pull out the 1 connector [a], and remove the Motor Fan [b].

7) Remove the 6 screws [a] in the Paper Pick-up Drive Assembly and the Vertical Path Drive Assembly.

98
8) Remove the Vertical Path Drive Assembly [a] and the Paper Pick-up Drive Assembly [b].

9) Check there is nothing abnormal with the gears in the Paper Pick-up Drive Assembly and Vertical Path Drive Assembly removed
at step 8). Then install them to the Main Body.
10) With both of the Paper Pick-up Drive Assembly and the Vertical Path Drive Assembly installed, tighten the screws (1) to (6)
in this order.

11) Install the parts by reversing the procedure from step 6.

Noise (squeaking noise) from the right rear side of Main Body

[Symptom]
Noise (squeaking noise) may occur from around the right rear side [a] of the Main Body.

[Cause]
If enough grease is not applied or no grease is applied to the side surface of the core of the swing gear in the Fixing Drive Unit,
the core rubs against the inner face of the gear. As a result, the symptom occurs.
If the symptom occurs during initial rotation after the power is turned ON or after a button on the touch panel is pressed, the above
cause is highly likely a main factor.

[Service work]
1) Remove the Fixing Drive Unit, by referring to Service Manual "Disassembly/Assembly > Fixing System > Removing the Fixing
Drive Unit."
2) Remove the cable [a] from the cable guide in the Fixing Drive Unit. Remove the 3 screws [b] and the Cover [c].

3) Remove the 3 gears (1), (2), and (3) in this order.

101
4) Remove the swing gear [a]. Press the core in the center to separate the core [b] from the gear [c].

5) Apply a grain of rice size of the grease (MOLYKOTE EM-50L GREASE) to the 2 ribs [a] at the middle of the core. Then insert
the core into the gear to assemble the swing gear.
[Caution]
- When inserting the core into the gear, be careful not to deform the spring [b].
- Be sure not to apply the grease to the inner face [c] and the end face [d] of the long hole in the core, and to the boss [e].

6) Position the boss [a] of the swing gear to a point between the mark-off lines [b] on the metal plate. Then insert the swing gear.

7) Install the parts by reversing the procedure from step 3).

[Caution]
- If the sheet for preventing pinching of the cable is attached to the Fixing Drive Unit and the sheet is once removed, be sure not
to reuse the sheet because its adhesive force is low.
- In order to prevent pinching of the cable, route the cable while making sure that the cable is not loosened. Especially, make
sure that the cable is not out of the claw at the point where the sheet was initially attached.
For details, refer to Service Information No. F00355 "Routing of the cable when installing Fixing Drive Assembly."
8) During initial rotation after the power is turned ON or after a button on the touch panel is pressed, check that the symptom
does not occur.
If the symptom does not improve, check other causes.

occur due to the disconnection of the connector.

[Symptom]
After turning on the main switch, the Abnormal noise (flicking noise) from the right side of the main body [A] and the display of
the message "Close the upper right cover of the drawer." on UI screen may occur.

[Cause]
J124[1] for DC controller PCB [A] and J602[2] for Deck driver PCB [B] communicate the detection of Paper Surface Sensor and
the upper right cover switch of cassette paper Pickup Assembly. The symptom occurs when a connector which is one of the two
above is disconnected.
-Paper Surface Sensor of the cassette paper Pickup Assembly is unable to detect the existence of media, so cassette 2 lift does
not stop and keeps on moving up and then the Abnormal noise occurs.
-The upper right cover switch is unable to detect the state of the cover closed, so the message "Close the upper right cover of
the drawer." is showed and the Abnormal noise is stopped.
[Refer] J124 is the connector for the DC controller PCB which is connected to J602 for the Deck driver PCB.

[Service work]
1) Check if J124 connector of DC controller PCB and J602 connector of Deck driver PCB are not disconnected.
If no connector is disconnected, check other factors (disconnection of cable and unit etc.)
2) Start the main body and, please confirm that a phenomenon does not occur.
3) If the symptom does not improve, then check other factors.

The waste toner gear holder comes off due to the contact during
setting the yellow developing assembly.

[Symptom]
In the machines prior to the Countermeasure cut-in serial number in factory described below when inserting a yellow developing
assembly into a main unit, if it is inserted in left oblique direction, the waste toner gear holder may come off. If this happens, it
may let the waste toner leak and result in a stained image and the abnormal sound occur.

[Cause]
-

[Service work]
Insert a yellow developing assembly in straight direction into a main unit.

In the normal state of waste toner gear holder [A], the boss fits into the mounting hole [a]. Also the side of waste toner gear holder
and the flat surface of mounting part are set parallel to each other [b].
In the coming off state of waste toner gear holder [B], the boss does not fit into the mounting hole [c]. Also the side of waste toner
gear holder and the flat surface of mounting part are not set parallel to each other [d].

Check not only visually but also by grasping the waste toner gear holder to confirm that it does not rattle.

Install the removed waste toner gear holder as follows:

1) Insert the boss[a] on the upper part of the waste toner gear holder into the mounting hole[A] of the main unit, and fix the claw[b]
by hooking it on the edge of the plate[B].

104
2) Install the waste toner gear holder by fitting the boss holes[c] on the lower part of the waste toner gear holder with the bosses[C]
of the main unit.

[Caution] Fig.[A] shows the state where the bosses are fitted deeply [a] and normally installed. Fig.[B] shows the state where the
bosses are fitted shallowly [b] and installed insufficiently.

3) Check that the above-mentioned three bosses and claws are fitted normally and the side of the waste toner gear holder and
the flat surface of the mounting part are set parallel to each other.

However, if the new type part mentioned as the factory measure is attached to the main unit, the symptom would not occur even
if the precaution for inserting a yellow developing assembly is not taken account.

Noise of tooth jump from the main drive assembly and blurred
image due to gear mounting position failure

[Symptom]
In the machines prior to the Countermeasure cut-in serial number in factory described below noise of tooth jump from main drive
assembly and blurred image may occur.

[Cause]
Gear shaft intervals may be widened depending on the amount of play in the area where a gear holder is mounted. In addition,
meshing failure of tooth occurs because the meshing amount of tooth decreases due to shrinkage of gear in a low temperature
environment, resulting in the above symptom.

[Service work]
When the above symptom occurs, refer to Service Manual and replace with the new type main drive assembly ( FM1-A611-010 ).

[Symptom]
the machines prior to the Countermeasure cut-in serial number in factory described below the second delivery drive assembly of
the main unit may emit a abnormal sound.2

[Cause]
Tightening the screw to fix the cover of the second delivery drive assembly deforms the same cover slightly. As the gear is tilted
from this deformation, the shaft of the gear comes in contact with the hole of the cover and results in the above mentioned
symptom.

[Service work]
A. Applying grease onto the gear
Prepare a quick-drying grease HANARL UD-321 (FY9-6037-000) and use it in the work following the procedure.
[Note] Molykote EM-50L (HY9-0007-000) is the alternative as grease to use.
1) Open the right door of the main unit.
2) Apply the grease to the portion[a] of the second delivery drive unit that is between the gear shaft and the cover retaining the
shaft.
[Note] In using Molykote EM-50L, apply it in an amount of about a grain of rice (20mg) on the outer circumference of the shaft.

3) Close the right door of the main unit.

B. Replacing with the new type gear

Prepare the new type gear (FU2-0093-000)[1] and perform the work following the procedure.
[Note] The actual color of the new type gear (FU2-0093-000) [1] is black.

1) Open the right door of the main unit.

0106/010B Jam Code due to the soiled duplex merging roller

[Symptom]
0106 jam or 010B jam occurs. Or no paper leading edge margin may occur.
0106 : Fixingt Delivery Sensor Delay jam
010B : Pre-Registration Sensor Delay jam

[Cause]
Some preprinted paper such as preprinted postcard is coated with powder in order to prevent each paper from sticking. When
such paper is passed, the duplex merging roller gets dirty and paper feeding failure occurs. This causes the above-mentioned
symptom.

[Service work]
When the symptom occurs, clean the duplex merging roller by following the steps below :
1) Fully open the right door of the main unit.
2) Remove duplexing guide assembly [1]. (two screws [2])

3) Remove stoppers (front/back) [2] of the dulexing guide assembly [1] by rotating it in the direction of the arrow.

4) Push up the duplex guide assembly and remove it by rotating it up to its removable position.

123
5) Clean duplex merging roller [1] of the duplex guide assembly with lint-free paper moistened with alcohol.

[Note] When removing the duplex merging roller for cleaning, remove it from the shaft support by rotating it in the direction of the
arrow
and sliding it in the axial direction.

6) Assemble it by following the above steps in the reverse order.

[Caution] When returning back the duplexing guide assembly removed in the step 2), be careful with the sheet not to be caught
and bent.

124
7) Make a test copy, and check that a jam does not occur.
If the symptom does not improve, check other causes.

E514-0002/1C14 Jam code due to incorrect paper width of the

aligning plate of the processing tray unit ( Inner Finisher_G1 )

[Symptom]
In the machines prior to the Countermeasure cut-in serial number in factory described below E514-0002 or 1C14 jam may occur
during the time of copying.
- E514-0002 : Assist Motor error
- 1C14 jam : Retry error jam (Assist Motor error)

[Cause]
There are 2 types of causes for the above-mentioned symptom.
<< Cause 1>>
Adjustment failure of the front alignment plate and the rear alignment plate at the time of assembling causes the above-mentioned
symptom.
It occurs when the number of printing paper is small (1-2 sheets).
1) If the distance [a] between the front alignment plate [1] and the rear alignment plate [2] is narrower than the paper width, printing
paper [3] gets resistance.

2) Printing paper [1] cannot be delivered due to the resistance to the printing paper [1] affected by the alignment plate [2], and
the assist claw [3] that is operating delivering slips under the printing paper.

126
3) When the assist claw [1] that has completed the delivering operation goes back to the home position, printing paper [2] is
caught at the back [a] of the assist claw, and its resistance has the motor step out to cause E514-0002 or 1C14 jam.

<< Cause 2>>

The symptom occurs, when the degree of upper curl is large or the printing paper is fanned by the window from the air-conditioning
equipment.
1) The leading edge of delivered printing paper [a] gets caught on the stack tray wire [1].

2) The printing paper getting caught on at the step 1) retains the next printing papers [2]. Therefore the subsequent printing paper
[4] gets caught on the back of assist claw [a] and a resistance is generated when the assist claw [3] retunes back to the home
position. That results in error E514-0002 or Jam 1C14 due to the motor's step-out caused by the resistance.

[Service work]
When the above-mentioned symptom occurs because of cause 1, adjust the width of alignment plate following step A) below.
When the above-mentioned symptom occurs because of cause 2, replace the stack tray wire with new type one following step
B) below.
A) Adjustment of the width of alignment plate
1) Select the paper to be set in the processing tray unit from Service Mode.
In case of A4 size : Service mode > SORTER > ADJUST > INF-ALG1
In case of LTR size : Service mode > SORTER > ADJUST > INF-ALG2
[Note] The paper size used for the width adjustment of the alignment plate is A4 size or LTR size.
2) Enter -50 in the section for entering the adjusted value [a] of the target paper and press OK [b] (the image below is the case
of A4)

127
[Note] This operation stops the alignment plate at the alignment position +5.0mm.
3) Set one sheet of paper [1] in the processing tray unit, fit it to the edge [b] of the rear alignment plate [2], and then measure the
gap [a] between the edge of the front alignment plate [3] and the paper with a scale.

[Note] Correspondence table of measured gap value and adjusted value

Gap mm (measured value) adjusted value

2.0 - 30

128
2.5 - 25
3.0 - 20
3.5 - 15
4.0 - 10
4.5 -5
5.0 0

5) Copy 3 sets of 5 originals and confirm that no alignment failure occurs.

In case alignment failure occurs again, adjusted width of the alignment plate may be improper. Please adjust it again from the
step 1).
6) Copy 10 sets of 1 original and confirm that no jam occurs.
7) Finish the operation.

B) Replacement of stack tray wire

1) Remove the inner finisher -G1 from the main body referring Service Manual.
2) Replace the stack tray wire [1] with new type one.

3) Put back the inner finisher-G1 to the main body.

020A jam cord due to the deformed 2nd delivery upper guide

[Symptom]
In the machines prior to the Countermeasure cut-in serial number in factory described below 020A jam may occur.
020A : Reverse Sensor Stationary jam

[Cause]
The backup sheet metal [2] generally contacts with the 2nd delivery upper guide [1] to prevent deformation. However, some
backup sheet metal [2] that was deformed by the failure during the manufacturing process and would not come in contact with
the guide was mixed in. Therefore, there is a possibility that the 2nd delivery upper guide may be deformed and the gap between
the guide may be extended. In that case, the sensor flag [3] of the reverse sensor may rotate in the direction of [a], and the feeding
paper [4] may caught by the sensor flag to cause the above-mentioned symptom.

[Service work]
When the above-mentioned symptom occurs, take Countermeasure A or Countermeasure B below.
Countermeasure A
1) Press down the backup sheet metal to come in contact with the 2nd delivery upper guide.
2) Measure the distance between the reference point [A], the lower section of the 2nd delivery upper guide, and the reference
point [B], the upper section of the delivery outlet, with a scale to confirm that the distance is within the standard range listed on
the table below. If it is out of the standard range, perform the work again.

Measured position Rear side [a] Around the center [b] Near side [c]
Standard range (mm) 30-31 25.5-26.5 30-31

[Attention] Measure the distance by placing the scale perpendicularly.

Countermeasure B
Attach as many support sheets (FL1-2468-000), that was newly set as a service part, to the support [a] of the backup sheet metal
as required until there is no gap between the 2nd delivery upper guide.

131
After taking this countermeasure the reverse guide cover [1] may not open by its own weight. Prepare and replace with the new
type reverse guide cover (FE3-1109-010) in the next step whose shape has been changed as a measure against the symptom
so that it opens and closes with its own weight.

1) Open the right cover of the main body.

2) Push the reverse guide cover rightward, detach and remove the support [a] on the left.

3) Mount the new type reverse guide cover (FE3-1109-010) and see if it opens and closes with its own weight.
4) Close the right cover of the main body.

0003 jam code due to the use of ADF under a high temperature
environment

[Symptom]
In the machines prior to the Countermeasure cut-in serial number in factory described below 0003 jam may occur when ADF is
used under a high temperature environment.
- 0003: Registration sensor delay jam.

[Cause]
Some play is placed between the rib [a] and the rib [b] that supports the empty sensor lever [1] to allow a smoother sliding of the
empty sensor lever [1].
However the empty sensor lever expands due to heat under a high temperature environment, therefore the play may be lost if
the dimensions of the ribs are inadequate. If the play is lost, the smooth sliding of the empty sensor lever is obstructed and results
in the above mentioned symptom.

[Service work]
When the aforementioned symptom has occurred, prepare and replace with the new type empty sensor lever (FC9-4971-020)
following the procedure below.
1) Open the feeder cover [1].

2) Remove the pickup roller assembly.

134
3) Remove the inner cover.
- Screw 1 pc.
- Claw 2 pcs.

4) Replace the empty sensor lever [1] with the new type.
- Claw 2 pcs.

135
5) Reassemble the parts in reverse order from the step 3).
6) Take a set of copy with 3 sheets of original placed in the ADF original tray, and check that the above mentioned symptom does
not occur.

Wrong stapling position or 1C14 jam after abnormal sound

(rasping sound) due to improper tray guide position of main body
(Inner Finisher-G1)

[Symptom]
During copying operation (set as 2 points stapling), abnormal sound (rasping sound) occurs and then wrong stapling position or
1C14 jam may occur.
- 1C14 jam : Retry Error (Assist Motor error)

[Cause]
Due to the improper installation position of tray guide [1] which is located at the time of inner finisher installation, the Inner Finisher-
G1 overlaps with the tray guide and then the frame (base plate) of Inner Finisher-G1 becomes deformed.
That results in the above mentioned symptom.
Fig.[A] shows the tray guide which is installed at proper position.

[Service work]
Install the tray guide of main body at proper position when Inner Finisher-G1 is installed.

ADF jam caused by flipped roller holder sheet or paper feed sheet
(DADF-AQ1)

[Symptom]
The original fed from ADF may get stuck to the roller holder sheet [1] or the paper feed sheet [2], resulting in a jam.

Jam Code Sensor No.

0003, 0004, 0043, 0044, 0095 SR1
0009, 0010, 0049, 0050 SR2
0013, 0014, 0053, 0054 SR3

[Cause]
Pulling the jammed paper towards to the upstream when clearing ADF jam, the paper may get stuck to the roller holder sheet [1]
or the paper feed sheet [2] causing these sheets to flip inward and remain in that state. When feeding paper from ADF in this
state, the paper gets stuck to the flipped sheets which are blocking the paper path. This causes the above symptom to occur.
The photo below [1] shows the roller holder sheet in a normal state and the photo [a] shows the sheet flipped inward [a]. The
photo below [2] shows the paper feed sheet in a normal state and the photo [b] shows the sheet flipped inward.

140
[Service work]
When the above symptom occurs, prepare one new type large roller holder (FL0-2752-010) and two small roller holders
(FL0-2751-010), and replace the old ones by following the procedure below. In addition, when installing the new type parts, the
paper feed sheet is no longer needed. Be sure to remove and discard it.

< Procedure >

1) Open the ADF and remove the lower base cover [1].
- 2 screws

2) Remove the 2 leaf springs [1].

- 2 screws

3) Remove the paper feed roller unit [1].

[Note] The part is not secured. Be sure not to make it fall or not to lose it.

141
4) Replace the large roller holder [1] and the small roller holders [2] with the new types.

5) Remove the two large paper feed sheets [1] and two small paper feed sheets. Discard the removed sheets. If any glue residue
is present after removing the sheets, clean it.

142
6) Assemble the parts in the reverse order from the Step 3).
7) Place 5 sheets of originals on the ADF's original tray and make one set of copy to make sure that the above symptom does
not occur.

E009-0000/0001,E021-0x20 since harness is caught

[Symptom]
E009-0000/0001 or E021-0x20 may occur.
-E009-0000: Fixing pressure timeout error
-E009-0001: Fixing disengagement timeout error
-E021-0x20: Developing Screw rotation detection error (x=1:Y, 2:M, 3:C, 4:Bk)

[Cause]
If the harness between First Delivery Unit and DC Controller PCB is set protruding from guide [a], the harness interferes with the
plate edge of the main unit frame, its coating may be damaged, and may cause short-circuit.
If the short-circuited line with damaged coating is 24V supply line, error occurs in the lower current area of the short-circuited
section and in the 24v system, which is the same line as the short-circuited line, and the above-mentioned symptom occurs.
If E021-0x20 occurs, DC controller PCB of the power supply may be damaged.

[Service work]
1 ) Open the Right Door, Remove the Right Cover (Rear Upper).
2) Check whether the coating of the harness in guide assembly is damaged.
If the coating of the harness is not damaged , then check other factors.
3) Prepare the newFirst Delivery Unit (FM1-D274-010/ FM1-D275-010) and replace with it.
[Reference] When replacingFirst Delivery Unit, see "Service Manual Disassembly/Assembly > Pickup/Feed System > Removing
the First Delivery Unit".
4) Perform the same operation as the symptom occurred, and check that the symptom does not occur.
If the symptom no longer occurs, the work is completed.
If E009-0000/0001 does not improve , then check other factors.
If E021-0x20 does not improve , go to step 5).
5) Prepare the newDC controller PCB(FM1-D804-000) and replace with it.
[Reference]
-When replacing DC controller PCB, see "Service Manual Disassembly/Assembly > Controller System > Removing the DC
Controller PCB".
-Before replacing the DC controller PCB back up the service mode data (approx. 2 min) and restore the backup data after the
replacement so the data may be able to be protected.
- Backup: COPIER (LEVEL2) > FUNCTION > SYSTEM > DSRAMBUP
- Restoration: COPIER (LEVEL2) > FUNCTION > SYSTEM > DSRAMRES

E025-0x10 due to the coming off of the arm of the lock assembly
of the toner bottle drive unit

[Symptom]
In the machines prior to the Countermeasure cut-in serial number in factory described below E025-0x10 may occur.
- E025-0x10 : Bottle Motor error (x : 1=Y, 2=M, 3=C, 4=Bk)

[Cause]
When the front door is open, the toner bottle is locked in order not to rotate. But if the arm of the lock section is detached, even
in the state where the front door is closed, rotation lock of the toner bottle is not released and the above-mentioned symptom
occurs.

[Service work]
When the above-mentioned symptom occurs, perform service work by following the procedures.
1) Refer to Service Manual to make the toner bottle drive unit of the main unit visible.
2) Check the joint section [a] of the arm that locks the rotation of the toner bottle.

3) Work depending on the joining state of the arm.

3-a) In case the arm joint is detached, insert the claw into the fitting hole in order to fix normally.
3-b) In case the arm joint is not detached, suspend the working and check other causes.

E280-000x, E302-000x, E315-0xxx, E732-0010 and E270-000x

caused by the fault of cable, flat

[Symptom]
In the machines prior to the Countermeasure cut-in serial number in factory described below Measure against E280-000x,
E302-000x, E315-0xxx, E732-0010 and E270-000x.
- E280-0001: Scanner Unit communication error. (Communication between the Main Controller and the Scanner Unit was not
started within the specified period of time.)
- E280-0002 : Scanner Unit communication error. (Disconnection of FFC between the Main Controller and the Scanner Unit was
detected.)
- E280-0003 : Scanner Unit communication error. (Reading or writing error was detected between the Main Controller and the
Scanner Unit.)
- E302-0001 : Shading error.( An error in the shading value was detected at white shading.)
- E302-0002 : Shading error.(An error in the shading value was detected at black shading.)
- E315-0007 : Image processing device error. (JBIG encode error was detected.)
- E315-0500 : Device timeout error.(An image synchronous signal from the Main Controller PCB to the Reader could not be
detected for 30 sec or longer.)
- E315-0510 : Device timeout error.(An image synchronous signal from the Main Controller PCB to the Reader could not be
detected for 30 sec or longer.)
- E732-0010 : Scanner communication error.(DDI-S communication error (Vsync detection error) was detected.)
- E270-0001 : Scanner Unit communication error. (The vertical scanning synchronous signal (VSYNC) was not transmitted
normally at the Scanner Unit side that communicates with the Main Controller PCB.)
- E270-0002 : Scanner Unit communication error. (The vertical scanning synchronous signal (VSYNC) was not transmitted due
to horizontal scanning synchronous signal (HSYNC) error which is sent to the Main Controller PCB.)
[Reference]
Previously it was difficult to identify cause for errors that occur due to broken flat cable since there are many errors available. To
make an improvement on the issue, a change in the software is made (MN-CONT V12.07 or later) so that E270-0002 is displayed
when the signal for broken flat cable is detected. (Refer to SI No.F01748)
The following Service Information can also be referred to as they are related to errors attributable to flat cable:
- When E280-0002 is displayed, as smoothness of the flat cable may be attributable to broken cable, the flat cable needs to be
replaced and a friction sheet needs to be attached. (Reference Service Information No.F00703)
- When E302-0001 is displayed, soiling on mirror is probably the cause, so the mirror needs to be cleaned. (Reference: Service
Information No.F01760)

[Cause]
There are 2 causes as below:
1.The terminals [1] of flat cable and the terminals [2] of connector are connected to the reader PCB. The terminals [2] are placed
on the terminals [1] and contacting as Figure [A].

When the dimensional accuracy for the flat cable is inadequate, terminals [1] and terminals [2] are off the correct positions and
contact at their sides as Figure [B] shows. If the products are shipped in this state, there may be no contacts of terminals [1] and

152
[2] due to transportation vibration and their state may become [C] condition which has no contact of the terminals. This results in
the abovementioned symptom.

2. The above symptom occurs when the flat cable is broken due to burr on the scanner unit or the flat cable being attached
diagonally.

[Service work]
When the above symptom occurs, prepare the new type flat cable set (FM1-U015-000) and replace the old one.
[Note] It is recommended to follow the steps below when replacing flat cable to avoid damaging the flat cable by accidentally
folding it, etc.
[Reference]The new type Flat Cable Set (FM1-U015-000) contains the following parts:
- Flat cable
- Slip sheet (FL1-4605-000) Newly set up as service part.
- Clamp sheet

a) Remove the belt from the reader assembly

a-1) Remove the copyboard glass. Pull and move the timing belt [3] right and left to bring the scanner unit [1] to the center.
[Note] Try not to touch the 2 reader shafts [2] as much as possible as grease is applied on them.

a-2) To protect the scanner unit and keep it from getting soiled, fold a A4 size sheet [a] in half along short side and place it under
the scanner unit (top of the frame) as shown in the picture below.

153
a-3) Loosen the screw [1] and slide the sheet metal [2] in the direction of the arrow [a] to loosen the tensioner of the timing belt
[3]. It is easier to perform the steps onwards by temporarily attaching the screw [1] while the tensioner is loosened.

a-4) Hold the scanner unit with left hand as shown in the photo below. While lifting it slightly, remove the timing belt with right
hand.

[Note] While performing this work, be sure to keep the flat cable loose as shown in the photo [A] at all times. Keeping the flat
cable stretched out as shown in the photo [B] may cause damage to the flat cable.

a-5) Place the scanner unit [1] sideways as shown in the photo below on the sheet of paper which was placed on the frame in
the step a-2). When placing it sideways, pay attention to how the flat cable [2] is twisted to avoid any damage to it.
[Reference] The scanner unit is placed in the center of the frame in the above instructions for better workability, but it can also
be placed on the reader glass [a] as instructed in Service Manual.

154
b) Replace the flat cable
b-1) Remove the flat cable. Take out the new type flat cable [1] from the flat cable set (FM1-U015-000) and attach it to the reader
of the main body.

[Note] The areas marked [a] are the most sensitive areas against damage. When removing/installing the flat cable, work with
caution for both front and back sides.

b-2) Attach the flat cable to the connector [1] of scanner unit .

155
b-3) Remove the liner of double-side sheet [a] of the flat cable and then align the cable to the left side guide to attach on the
scanner unit.

[Note] Make sure to attach the flat cable in the state of aligning it to the left side guide.
b-4) Slide the cable retaining sheet under the 4 guide claws [1] to place it as shown in the following photos.

b-5) Set the flat cable without removing the double-sided sheet attached to the folded section [a] of the flat cable. Hold the flat
cable temporarily with the clamp sheet [1] on the frame to avoid the flat cable from being loose.

[Note] The flat cable is temporarily secured to avoid having the loose flat belt caught by the scanner when it moves right and left
in later steps.

c) Install the belt in the reader assembly

156
c-1) Move the timing belt [2] to the rear with flat head screwdriver [1], etc. to have it apart from the reader shaft [3] for better
workability.

c-2) While paying attention not to stretch the flat cable, lift the scanner unit with left hand.

c-3) Of the 2 timing belts running parallel to the shaft, hold the one located in front [1] with right hand and attach it to the mounting
groove [a] on the scanner bushing.

c-4) Just as the step b-3), also attach the timing belt located in rear [1] to the mounting groove. For the timing belt in rear [1],
removing the belt first from the pulley [2] makes it easier to attach the belt to the mounting groove.

c-5) Place the scanner unit on the shaft. Return the sheet metal slided in the step a-3) under a) Remove the belt from the reader
assembly, apply some tension to the timing belt and tighten the screw.

157
c-6) If the slip sheet [2] is not attached to the FFC guide sheet [1], prepare and attach the slip sheet (FL1-4605-000) [2] along the
following reference lines. When attaching the sheet, place the scanner unit to the right side from the center.
- Reference line for attaching [a]: Align the slip sheet with the left side of the flame.
- Reference line for attaching [b]: Align the slip sheet with the rear edge of the FFC guide sheet [1].

c-7) Position the flat cable [1] where folded in L-shape against the rib [a] of the size detection sensor support mount.

c-8) Position the flat cable [2] in parallel to the FFC guide sheet(light blue)[1]. Be sure it does not go outside the FFC guide sheet.
Press the flat cable to the FFCguide sheet (light blue) so that the margin between the FFC guide sheet and the flat cable ([A] and
[B]) is within 1mm.

158
[Note] The FFC guide sheet (light blue) [1] is attached on the black FFC guide sheet in the same shape. If the FFC guide sheet
(light blue) is not attached, position the flat cable in parallel to the black FFC guide sheet just like the above and press while
making sure it does not become diagonal.

Reference] Refer to the photo below for the position [A] and [B].
[A]: Downward in a vertical direction from the inside of the frame [a]
[B]: Downward in a vertical direction from the inside of the frame in the center between [b] and [c]

c-9) Remove the liner from the double-sided tape located on the backside of the flat cable where folded and attach the doublesided
tape.
[Note] Be sure that the flat cable is straight against and is not loose from the FFC guide sheet.

c-10) With a scale, measure each of the distances [A] and [B] being from the upright potion of frame to the flat cable.

159
c-11) Confirm that the difference between distances [A] and [B] measured at Step c-10) is within 1mm.
c-12) Attach the copyboard glass.

E516/E577/E537 and 1200 jam codes due to the clutch locking

within the paddle drive assembly (Inner Finisher-G1)

[Symptom]
In the machines prior to the Countermeasure cut-in serial number in factory described below During a print operation where more
than one sheet is specified to be printed, the paper feed retainer [1] may gradually lifts up and an error or an early arrival jam
may be induced.
- E516 : Paddle motor error with Inner Finisher_G1
- E577 : Paddle motor error with Inner Finishre_G1
- E537 : Front alignment motor error
- 1200 : Early arrival jam

[Cause]
Depending on the amount of looseness of the clutch [1] in the paddle drive assembly, the frictional resistance on the tooth surface
of the clutch rises if the clutch is tilted during the operation.
The clutch locks due to the risen frictional resistance and results in the above mentioned symptom.

162
[Service work]
Apply quick-drying grease on the whole clutch and assign the paddle drive assembly (FM1-C426-000) as a new spare part on
which the frictional-resistance is reduced.
If the symptom has occurred, prepare and replace with the paddle drive assembly (FM1-C426-000) following the procedure below.
Mind that the following procedure starts from the point after removing the Inner Finisher from the copier main device.
[Points to note] In disassembling the clutch in the paddle drive assembly, be sure not to let the viscous grease attaches inside
the clutch during the work, otherwise the clutch might stop to operate properly.

<Procedure>
1) Open the front cover [1].
2) Remove the 2 screws [2].

3) Pull the front cover unit [1], and disconnect the connector [2].

163
4) Hold the timing belt at the bottom side and move it in the direction of the arrow to move the staple unit to the rear side.

[Reference] Move the staple unit to a position inside the plate.

5) Remove the cable guide
5-1) Remove the interlock cable [1] from the cable guide [2].

[Points to note] Do not pull the interlock cable too strong during the work, otherwise the micro switch mount at the end of the
interlock cable may be damaged. Also mind the leaf spring [1] during the work not to deform the leaf spring [1] by touching it
during the work.

164
5-2) Remove the 2 screws [2] that is fixing the cable guide [1].

5-3) Disconnect the 2 connectors [1] connected to the motor assembly.

165
5-4) Lift the left side of the cable guide [1] to release the claw [2] on the left side.

5-5) Release the 2 claws [1] and the boss [2] on the right side of the cable guide to remove the cable guide.

5-6) Disconnect the 2 connectors [1].

166
6) Replace the paddle drive assembly
6-1) Remove the E-ring [1] shown in the photo to remove the bushing [2].
[Points to note] Mind the claws [3] of the photo-interrupter during the work to avoid hit the claws and the photo-interrupter comes
off.

6-2) Remove the 2 stepped screws [1].

167
6-3) Remove the screw [1].

6-4) Move the paddle drive assembly [1] in the direction of the arrow and remove it together with the timing belt [2].

6-5) Prepare the new paddle drive assembly (FM1-C426-000).

168
[Points to note] The bushing of the new paddle drive assembly may be not seated properly. In that case, reseat the bushing in
the correct place.

6-6) Set the timing belt [1] behind the 18T pulley [2] shown in the photo.

6-7) Insert the molded shaft[3] inside the cam [4] while keeping the shaft [1] of the paddle drive assembly so that the shaft fits
into the hole [2] of the plate.
[Reference] If it is difficult to insert the molded shaft [3] inside the cam [4], a slight rotation of the cam facilitates the fitting.

169
6-8) While performing the work in the step 6-7), match the position of the shaft [1] to that of the hole [2] of the paddle drive assembly
and then fit there.
7) Reassemble the part

s in reverse order from the step 6-3).

E280-0002/E302-0001 due to the disconnection of flat cable in the

inside scanner of main body

[Symptom]
In the machines prior to the Countermeasure cut-in serial number in factory described below E280-0002 or E302-0001 may occur.
- E280-0002 : Disconnection of the cable between the Reader Controller PCB and the Scanner Unit (Paper Front) was detected.
- E302-0001 : Error in paper front white shading

[Cause]
Flat cable [1] inside scanner of the main body slides [a] while carriage [2] scans document, and the flat cable is raised [b] and it
may be run over by the carriage. If this movement is repeated, the flat cable will be disconnected and it will cause the symptom.
Figure [A] below shows the correct movement, and figure [B] shows that the lower side [a] of the flat cable facing the bottom plate
of reader frame slides together with the carriage in the dir ection of forward movement, and then the flat cable is raised [b].

The photo below shows that the flat cable [1] is raised. [2] indicates the carriage and the arrow indicates the direction of forward
movement of the carriage.

172
[Service work]
When the symptom occurs, prepare the new type friction sheet (FL0-3218-010) and attach it to the place where the reader frame
and the flat cable come in contact by following the steps stated below.
1) Remove copyboard glass, and slide scanner unit [1] to the right.

2) Peel the release paper [a] off the friction sheet [2] until about 30 mm from the tip (side where the slip sheet is attached to).

3) Lay the tip [b] of the friction sheet on the black sheet to come in contact with the inner wall [c] of the reader frame.

173
4) Peel off all the release paper slowly and attach the friction sheet to the black sheet so that the black sheet is covered. Pease
make sure that the both edges of the friction sheet and the black sheet contact as exactly as possible.

5) Peel off blue protective sheet [d] of the friction sheet.

6) Install the copyboard glass. The scanner unit slid in the step stated above 1) will automatically return to the home position
when the power is tuned on.

E302-0001 due to soiling on the mirror in the scanner unit

[Symptom]
E302-0001 may occur.
- E302-0001 : Shading error.( An error in the shading value was detected at white shading.)

[Cause]
Soiling on the mirror in the scanner unit.

[Service work]
When the above symptom occurs, follow the steps and clean the mirror in the scanner unit.
1) Remove the copyboard glass. Pull and move the timing belt [3] right and left to bring the scanner unit [1] to the center.
[Note] Try not to touch the 2 reader shafts [2] as much as possible as grease is applied on them.

2) To protect the scanner unit and keep it from getting soiled, fold a A4 size sheet [a] in half along short side and place it under
the scanner unit (top of the frame) as shown in the picture below.

3) Loosen the screw [1] and slide the sheet metal [2] in the direction of the arrow [a] to loosen the tensioner of the timing belt [3].
It is easier to perform the steps onwards by temporarily attaching the screw [1] while the tensioner is loosened.

4) Hold the scanner unit with left hand as shown in the photo below. While lifting it slightly, remove the timing belt with right hand.

176
[Note] While performing this work, be sure to keep the flat cable loose as shown in the photo [A] at all times. Keeping the flat
cable stretched out as shown in the photo [B] may cause damage to the flat cable.

5) Place the scanner unit [1] in parallel to the reader shaft [3] as shown in the photo below.
[Note] Be sure not to get any grease on the flat cable [2] from the reader shaft [3].

6) Remove the 2 screws [1] located at the left and right ends and disconnect the connector [a].

177
7) Remove the LED unit [a] from the scanner unit.

8) The figure below is the section view of the scanner unit with the LED unit removed. Mirrors are available from [1] to [5], but the
error only occurs on the mirrors from [1] to [4]. Clean the side [a] of the mirrors from [1] to [4]. It is recommended to clean them
in the order from [1] to [4].
[Reference] The names of each mirror are as below:
- [1] Mirror 1
- [2] Mirror 2
- [3] Mirror 3
- [4] Mirror 4
- [5] Mirror 5 (Error not applicable)

9) Layer 2 to 3 sheets of lint-free paper, put it over your index finger and fold. Fold it again in the center and put some alcohol at
the tip.

178
10) By moving the lint-free papers in one direction from one end of the mirror to the other end, clean the mirror in one wipe.
[Note] When cleaning the mirror, do not do the following as it may cause uneven cleaning.
- Start wiping the mirror somewhere in middle in longitudinal direction.
- Stop wiping halfway
- Move the lint-free papers back and forth.

11) Reassemble the parts from the step 7) in reverse order.

[Note] When reassembling the parts, be sure not to get any grease on the flat cable from the reader shaft.
12) Make some test prints to make sure that the issue does not occur.
