What are EICOSANOIDS?
• The word eicosanoid : The Greek word for
number 20 (eicosa)
• 20-carbon essential fatty acids
• Biosynthesized in all mammalian cell
except RBC
• Short half lives (10 secs - 5mins) so that
function are usually limited to action on
nearby cells.
• Two major groups: omega3, omega6
What are EICOSANOIDS?
Precursor of eicosanoids
• Omega 6 group: Inflammatory
• Omega 3 group: Anti-inflammatory
Eicosanoids functions
• Response to injuries and infections and to
manage the repair and healing processes :
emergency situations
