Summary of Sean Illing's conversation with Author of Tyranny Inc. on Weeds Podcast(On Vox)

Topic: Conservative Socialism

Conservative socialism is a political ideology that combines elements of traditional conservatism with
elements of socialism. It emphasizes the importance of tradition, social order, and community while also
advocating for social welfare and economic equality.

A conservative is someone who generally believes in limited government, individual responsibility, and
traditional values. They often support policies like lower taxes, deregulation, and a strong military. In the
United States, conservatives often align with the Republican Party, although not all Republicans identify
as conservative.

Socialism is a political and economic system in which the means of production (such as factories and
farms) are owned by the community as a whole rather than by private individuals. This can be
accomplished through democratic control of the economy or through a centrally planned economy.
Socialism is often associated with countries like China, Cuba, and the former Soviet Union.

The few who control economic power and won the means of production are the Bourgeoisie while the
workers or working class are the much larger proletariat–who must sell their own labour power.

In his book, Ahmari critiques the exploitation in the workplace and capitalist power.

The author of Tyranny, Inc is a conservative thinker who has a left wing approach.

Conservative socialism is a school of thought that combines elements of socialism and conservatism. The
main idea is that socialism can only succeed if it is rooted in traditional values and institutions. In other
words, conservative socialists believe that socialism should respect the past and focus on preserving
traditional institutions like the family, religion, and the nation. They also often advocate for a mixed
economy that combines elements of capitalism and socialism.

For an economy without Alienation and Exploitation.

He is a youthful marxist and universalist who believes that the world is legible.

Universalists believe in the universal account of the world, for morality and social order.

Sohrab is a conservative making a case for democratic socialism.

He is a new dealer–Pro life new dealer who raises an advocacy against precarious wages, liberty of
contract, and private arbitration.

Tyranny, Inc explains economic coercion in American life.

Irony- Economic coercion in a democratic political system.

The way the supposedly non coercive society is fused with coercion. People/workers being forced to do
things in coercive means.

E.g The employment agreement that allows you to relinquish your voice, your singing voice, and
persinna. The employer can license in perpetuity(forever) to any licensee and you have no recourse to
sue the employer or licensee for any abuse.
It is a form of obscene coercion made possible by the asset owning few, economic inequality.

Counter tradition is the new deal which conservative socialists preach.

Politics is the pursuit of common good so it should eliminate coercion. It is a real concern for working
class people.

Welfare

Health Insurance–Unaffordable for students in the working class.

Fear of huge bills and welfare of workers is not prioritized.

The Republican party rarely cares about the working class in their policies.

Conservative socialism seeks to empower workers to resist ideological pressure from employees.

There is also economic tyranny- Private actors coerce workers.

The ideology as a source of political freedom only is wrong because we have market tyrants who
engage in unjust coercion.

Fight for economic freedom is curtailed because of a lack of choice and a quest for survival.

However, there is a thin line between bankruptcy and your earnings in a tyrannical economic system.
It states the state should not only leave the market but it should be configured to fit the market.

The market governs the society.
