Installing a new power distribution panel

Follow these required steps to install a new power distribution panel before proceeding with the Z77
upgrade.

Important! — You must install a Ciena Power Distribution Panel (Part #910‐0078‐01); or
provide power to the shelf using an existing or customer-supplied power distribution
panel that supports 40 Amp fuses or breakers. If the existing Z77 power distribution
panel supports 40 Amp fuses or breakers, you may skip this procedure and proceed with
“Upgrading power cables to an existing Z77 shelf.”

1. Arrange with building facilities for two additional breakers at the Battery Distribution Fuse
Bay (BDFB) and for cabling from the BDFB to the new power distribution panel rack location.
2. Install the new power distribution panel into the rack.
3. Connect input power to the new power distribution panel.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not install fuses in the output position (to provide power to the Z77
chassis) at this point. You will install these fuses after connecting new Z77 power cables.

Upgrading power cables to an existing Z77 shelf

IMPORTANT! — The Z77 Power Upgrade Guide pertains to the two-fan Z77 shelf model, referred to as
the Z77 shelf v2. You cannot perform a power upgrade on the older three-fan Z77 shelf model.
Follow these required installation steps to upgrade an existing Z77 chassis in the field.
NOTE: Power Entry Module (PEM) ‘A’ feed connectors at the rear of the Z77 chassis are labeled
side ‘1‘ and PEM ‘B’ feed connectors are labeled side ‘2.’
1. Run the new battery (-48VA) / battery return (RTN A) cable assembly from the power
distribution panel to the Z77 chassis. DO NOT connect the new cable assembly at the power
distribution panel or Z77 chassis at this point.
2. Remove the existing ‘A’ feed power cable from the Z77 chassis.
a. Arrange for building facility personnel to turn off the BDFB breakers for the ‘A’ feed.
b. Remove the four ‘A’ output position fuses from the existing power distribution panel to
interrupt power to the ‘A’ feeds on the chassis.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The Z77 chassis is now powered only from the ‘B’ feed.
c. Disconnect the eight ‘A’ power wires (four -48VA and four RTN A wires) at the power
distribution panel one at-a-time and tape the cable lugs.
NOTE: When you remove the BDFB power, the system raises a “POWER_FEED_LOSS”
major alarm. The alarm displays in the Z77 LED Operations Panel.
d. Disconnect the ‘A’ -48V/RTN power cable connector from the PEM side ‘1’ connector, at
the rear of the Z77 chassis.
e. Remove the ‘A’ power cable assembly from the rack.
3. Install the new ‘A’ feed power cable to the Z77 chassis.
