WHAT IS AN INFINITIVE?

 An infinitive is a basic form of a verb that acts as a noun,


adjective ,or adverb and is usually preceded by the word “to”.
 Infinitives express actions in sentences .
 An infinitive is formed by TO+V, for example, to eat, to walk, to run,
to dress, to shout and others.

Tip 1: When infinitives acts as nouns, they answer the question “what?”.
Also when it works as a noun in a sentence, it acts as the subject of the
sentence, the object of the sentence and the subject complement.
Tip 2: When infinitives work as adjectives, they modify a noun in a
sentence.
Tip 3: When infinitives work as adverbs in a sentence, they modify the
verb.
Examples:
INFINITIVE AS NOUN
Subject
1. To run daily keeps you fit.
Subject
2. To see her happy keeps me happy.  Answers the question “what”?
 Can be replaced with
(Direct object) this/that/someone

3.Everybody likes to dance .


4. My job is to teach students.
Subject complement

INFINITIVE AS AN ADJECTIVE
Noun
1. He is the guy to meet tomorrow.  Which?
Noun
2. I need a place to live.

INFINITIVE AS AN ADVERB
Verb
1. He called me to borrow some money.

 Can be moved around
2. I went there to help.
