Engineering Mechanics Homework

This document contains a homework assignment on allowable stress design involving bolted connections. It includes 7 problems analyzing stresses in bolted plates, computing allowable forces based on bolt shear strength, and determining factors of safety. The student is asked to identify stresses and shear forces, match equations to bolts, label stress values on plots, and complete free body diagrams showing internal forces in a bolted beam connection.

HW29 Allowable Stress Design II

You may (1) write directly on a hard copy of this assignment; or (2) download a copy and digitally annotate a
PDF. Either way, upload a PDF of your solution. Keep the master copy. All expectations from LE00 are in effect.

(1) Two plates are bolted together, as shown. Let’s assume that
there are other parts of the connection in 3D space (that are
not shown in this 2D diagram) that brace the design and
ensure static equilibrium.
Fill in the blanks.
The stress in the plate at plane a-a is _______ (𝞼 or 𝞽)
because the flow of force is _______ (⟂ or ∥) to that plane.
The stress in the bolt at plane b-b is _______ (𝞼 or 𝞽)
because the flow of force is _______ (⟂ or ∥) to that plane.

(2) Watch a two-minute video on Shear Strength

of a Threaded Fastener (or connector) by
Flexible Assembly Systems.
(a) Compare Bolt A and Bolt B (at right).
Both are loaded in double-shear: each
bolt has two shear planes (n=2).
One of these bolts acts more like a
beam, experiencing transverse shear
stress (VQ/It) that is the type of shear
(V) that is the derivative of moment
(V= dM/dx).
The other acts like a fastener,
experiencing direct shear (V) that is
not a function of a moment (M).
Match the equations (left column) to
the bolt (right column).

(b) In the video, four bolt strengths were

given (as follows). Label each value on
its correct location on the two plots.
Refer back to LE03 and LE04.
→ Ultimate tensile stress: 440 MPa
→ Tensile yield stress: 370 MPa
→ Ultimate shear stress: 330 MPa
→ Shear yield stress: 215 MPa

(c) Compute the allowable force P that may be applied to the double-shear connection at Bolt A.
Let’s say that this particular alloy yields
in shear stress at 215 MPa.
You want a factor of safety of 2.5 with
respect to shear yielding in the bolt.
The bolt’s diameter is 10 mm.
You do not need to take the screw
threads into account (for any of the
problems in this class).

Ans. 13.5 kN

(3) Compute the allowable force P that is
transferred over this multi-bolt connection.
Interpret the image to the best of your ability
and use the parameters in the prior problem
(it’s the same bolt). You only have to consider
shear stress.

Ans. 13.5 kN

(4) Compute the allowable force P that is

transferred over this multi-bolt connection.
Interpret the image to the best of your ability
and use the parameters above (it’s the same
bolt). You only have to consider shear stress.

Ans. 81.1 kN
(5) These U-bolts have been manufactured from a
ductile alloy that has a tensile yield stress of
170 MPa.
What is the factor of safety with respect to
normal stress in the U-bolts at plane a-a?
Hint: in HW28, you determined the downward
reaction of the pipe on the U-bolt as 5 kN.

Ans. 1.92
(6) Watch Mechanical Fasteners (YouTube user Mr. Dillman’s Tech Channel): https://youtu.be/3hpNHzm88TM
Was the video useful? ❑ very useful: I don’t have much experience with this and learned a lot
❑ somewhat useful: I know the basics but picked up some new information
❑ not useful at all: I already know a lot about fasteners

(7) Beam AB is supported by pin connections at A and C. It supports a line load as shown. The 3D sketch depicts
the connection at C. All bolts yield at 33 ksi (shear stress) and have a cross-sectional area of 0.1 square inches.

Complete FBDs #1, #2, and #3. In FBD #2

please use the x’-y’ coordinate system. Show
all work.

Which locations experience bearing stress?

❑ a and d
❑ b and c
❑ a and c
❑ all four

What is the factor of safety with respect to yielding in the bolt at C? Ans. F.S. = 2.11
