Speech Analysis

Speech 1 - Barack Obama: "Yes We Can"

I think that Obama's speech is effective. There are a few reasons why I think his speech is
effective, they are: having appropriate body language, always maintaining eye contact during
the speech, having a suitable volume which makes everyone clearly hear what he is talking
about, making the speech clear and well-organized, as well as maintaining the rhythm of the
speech.

First of all, he used quite a lot of body language in his speech, which is actually nice as it
sometimes could help us understand the speech. Most importantly, the body language in the
speech was also fluid and not exaggerated. For example, he used a lot of gestures with his
hand to stress out some important points. This helped the audience to be more focused and
concentrated on the ideas Barack Obama tried to bring out.

Secondly, Barack Obama maintained sufficient eye contact with the audience. Eye contact is
really important as it represents that the speaker is connected with the audience. By having
good eye contact with the audience, the speech would also be much more impressive and
memorable.

A suitable volume is also an important factor for the speech. In the speech, Obama was
talking in a voice which was clear enough but not too loud. Imagine if the person who was
giving the speech talks very quietly, we basically couldn't even hear what the speaker is
talking about, and we would not be able to hear the speech. Therefore, it also means that
although the speaker has a good speech, the speech still couldn't be effective unless the
volume is suitable.

The last point that was included in the speech to make it effective is that it was really clear
and well-organized, with a nice rhythm during the speech. Having a well-organized and clear
speech makes your audience more concentrated on the message you want to bring out in
the speech. In addition, Obama has a nice rhythm during the speech, as he stops at the end
of every sentence and at every important point in the speech.

However, I believe the atmosphere of the speech is actually too stressful. I think it would be
better if he could have more interaction with the audience.
Speech 2 - Speech to Inform by Scott L. Tauber

I think Scott L. Tauber's speech is not effective. There are a few reasons why I think his
speech was not effective. Tauber did not have any eye contact, had an inappropriate volume
of giving a speech, did not maintain a body language and did not organize his speech well.

For the part of the volume of the speech, he used almost the same volume in the whole
speech. This makes his speech not attractive and it was harder to draw the audience's
attention.

Moreover, for the part of eye contact and body language, Tauber was always looking at his
notes. Of course using the notes to help the speaker stay concentrated on what he is going
to talk about is important, but the speaker also needs to have a connection with the audience
by maintaining eye contact from time to time. As mentioned from the last speech, having eye
contact in the speech increases the connection between the speaker and the audience. The
speaker also did not have any body language in the speech. We can see that Scott L.
Tauber was very nervous, and he was holding both his hands together all the time instead of
using them to help explain some key points and stress out the arguments. However, he did
not use any gestures or body movements which made the speech quite boring for the
audience.

Finally, Scott L. Tauber did not have a clear and well-organized speech. From his speech we
could feel that he is not fluent and well-prepared for the speech. He also stopped his speech
at an inappropriate place, for example, in the middle of a point, this makes the audience hard
to follow and understand what message he actually wants to bring out in the speech.
Perhaps more preparation and organization would be beneficial for Scott.

Therefore, the above reasons are why I don't think Scott L. Tauber's speech was effective.
Speech 3 - Speech to Inform: "Alopecia"

I think the speech Alopecia is effective, as other than the points mentioned above, there is a
special factor in this speech which makes her speech effective, which is giving personal real
life examples.

By giving simple and real life experience examples to the audiences, the speech has
become more interesting, attractive and well-understood. Giving examples also increased
connection with the audiences, and the speech was more closely related to the audiences,
especially the ones who experienced the same thing. And giving personal experiences is
also like telling stories, it increases the information of the speech, therefore it also makes the
speech effective.

Of course, other points I mentioned in the other two speeches, including having good eye
contact and appropriate body language, are also included in this speech. The speaker in this
speech has a nice talking tone, which attracts the audience and makes them want to
continue listening to them. In addition, the speaker used humour and jokes in the speech,
which entertained the audience and provided them fun. Thus, other than being informative,
the speaker was able to be entertaining as well. These are the reasons why I find this
speech really effective.
