Public Speaking Week 5

READING WEEK 5

Name: Phan Ngọc Diễm – Student’s code: B1908962

Question 1: What is the most important message in this chapter?

The Inner Language chapter is one of the most crucial factors in a speaker's
public speaking process. This reading, therefore, has a lot of meaningful
messages for those studying public speaking. One of the important messages is
the author wants to convey to learners is that when speaking in public, we must
learn how to manage the Inner Language and always be ourselves. In order to
control our Inner Language, we need to know how to restrain ourselves from
overacting whether we show it or not, as this will make the audience realize and
not believe what you say. To avoid this, you must project your own passion into
the topic you are talking about, which will help you convince your audience that
what they are hearing is worth the time and attention. Only when you speak
with passion and enthusiasm will you not only convince your audience but also
connect you with them naturally. Besides, you have to be yourself when
standing in front of a crowd. In order to do this, we must keep our energy steady
when expressing the message we are saying. We all exhibit nervousness
sometimes, but try not to talk in a strident voice, because that will make the
audience feel like they don't trust you. In addition, you should never worry too
much about your appearance, because that way you will lose your confidence
and do not express what you want to say. This will distract your audience,
become unconvinced, and even disgruntled with you.

Question 2: Of the 3 types language (verbal, body, and inner), which do you
think is the most important one? Give reasons.

In the public speaking process, all three language factors, namely spoken
language, body language, and inner language, play a crucial role. I do not
realize one factor is more important than the other or plays the most significant
function. That is because I believe these three factors will combine and support
each other to assist the speaker to succeed in the presentation. Spoken language
will help the speaker convey the message to the audience in an understandable
and convincible way. However, in the circumstance, during the whole speaking
process, the speaker does not know how to regulate their body language well,
making their limbs uncomfortable or too awkward. That will make it obvious to
the audience that the speaker is nervous or insecure, causing them to lose
confidence in the person standing in front of them. In addition, if the speaker
has immeasurable control of their spoken language and body language, but they
do not know how to verify or restrain themselves, it will also have the opposite
effect on the audience. In other words, if the speaker does not use his passion to
convey the message, regulate his energy, and confidently present to the
audience, one will not be able to convince the audience their claim that their
time and attention are worth it. After all, all three elements of language are
significant for the speaker in the composition process, so if the speaker can use
these three elements proficiently in the expressing process, they are mostly
destined to be successful.
