Tet is a national festival for Vietnamese. This is an opportunity for every us to appreciate
the past year and looking forward to the new year. At Tet, each locality organizes spring
fairs, decorates streets and public buildings brightly, and virtually all shops at stores for
Tet. Furthermore, every family cleans and washes their dwellings; prepares traditional
foods and fruit for placing on ancestral altars. One of the old Vietnamese customs on the
first day of the new year was first-footing. The first-footing is taken by the first fortunate
visitor who enters the house and gives the children lucky money. Finally, Tet is an
occasion for people who work far away to return their home, relatives, and neighbors to
offer each other the best wishes for the New Year.
