Assignment 5: Analyzing Various Media

1. Pepsi vs Coke
This image shows two cans. One of them is blue with a word written in it, which is “Pepsi”.
The other can is red with a white line which I think refers to Coke, another brand that is also
really popular. Apart from that, I can see two straws: one of them inserted in the blue can
and the other one trying not to be inserted in the red can. This picture tries to catch the eye
of most teenagers as they are the ones that drink soda more regularly with the purpose of
trying to make them buy Pepsi instead of Coke.

In my sincere opinion, this picture tries to communicate to people that Coke is better than
Pepsi. They use Coke and not any other soda brand because these two brands have always
been in a kind of competitive situation as their drinks are very similar. However, I don’t think
this kind of advertisement is effective because people have their own preferences. If
someone who likes Coke more than Pepsi, won’t be influenced by this advertisement and
people who prefer Pepsi over Coke, they also aren’t going to be influenced by the
advertisement as they already buy that drink. Moreover, I think these kinds of
advertisements are kind of rude because they try to put the other brand on an inferior level.

2. Gotta share
This video shows a group of people singing and dancing as if it was a musical where they
say that nowadays everyone uses social media to share whatever we want such as cat
pictures, tweets, our pictures, etc. because of the public I saw there was in the video, it is
directed to anyone who likes social media in general.

However, I didn’t understand what they were trying to do with that musical apart from
communicating how important social media has become in our very own lifes. There was a
name projected on the wall which I suppose could be the name of a new app: “Twirl”. Even if
it was a little hard to get the point of this video, it was really entertaining and I have to say I
watched it more than once because of the song. It was really sticky and after watching this
video I couldn’t stop singing it. So in general, even if I found it a little hard to understand, it
was a really good way of advertising a new app.

3. News
This picture shows a green onion and next to it there is a text written which says “The onion”.
After visiting the attached link, I can say this is a newspaper kind of page where they talk
about interesting things that are not only about politics or other topics we hear in the TV
news. It is for teenagers such as adults and for everyone else who can read and understand
what it says. Its purpose is to tell the readers about cultural and random news to disconnect
them from their work or studies.

After reading the text that came in the link attached from The onion, I think that this
newspaper fulfills its work when communicating different types of news to people. It made
me forget about what I was doing and read more news on the page. And after reading lots of
new information I feel a lot more informed. When you always hear the same types of news
such as politics you get tired of it. But thanks to these types of newspapers we get new
information and read a lot more, leaving our phones away for some time - at least if you
don’t use your phone to read.

4. We can do it
In this picture we can see a woman wearing what might be a blue jumpsuit and a red
headband that covers most of her hair. She is showing her strong arm while there is a
bubble in the upper side of the picture which says “We can do it!”. This picture is for all the
working women that have had troubles in their workspace such as with coworkers or with the
money they earn with the purpose of giving them the strength to talk about it with someone
and change it.

In my opinion, it tries to communicate the hard time women had to deal with during the old
days, when they weren’t allowed nor to vote or to work. They were just there to serve food
and look up for their children. Moreover, this picture it’s a symbol for all the women who are
scared to work as they think they will be treated as if they were inferior to men. So I think it is
an effective way of communicating to women that they are not alone and that they can do it
as well as men.

5. Apple - Get a Mac


In this video there are two men where one of them is called “Mac”, referring to the new
computer Apple launched and the other is called “PC”, referring to every other computer that
is not a “Mac”. PC says that he needs to get “surgery” more than once. This refers to all the
updates it has to do and we can see it by the way the man is dressed: with a hospital coat.
However, Mac doesn't need a “surgery” because we see the man dressed with everyday
clothes. I would say that probably, it is directed to everyone who knows how to use
computers.

As far as I am concerned, this ad does its job. It shows the negative sides of a PC making
the people who are watching the ad think of buying a new computer that is a Mac.
Nevertheless, I find it really boring and not as eye-catching as it could have been. They only
talk about the negative sides of the PC and they actually don’t say anything relevant about
the type of computer they are trying to sell. So, even though it makes people think of buying
a new one, they wouldn’t pay that much attention as it is a boring ad where they don’t really
say much.
