The Department of Education
(Deped) in the Philippines is
responsible for the
administration, regulation and
supervision of the country's
basic education system. Republic
Act No. 9155 also known as the
Governance of Basic Education
Act of 2001, outlines the
organizational structure of
Deped.
Republic Act No. 9155 provides
the legal framework for the
Department of Education's
organizational structure in the
Philippines. This structural
hierarchy ensures efficient
management and governance of
the education system, from the
national level down to individual
schools. It underscores the
commitment of Deped to
provide quality education to all
Filipino learners.
The organizational structure The Central office mandates the overall
of DepEd is composed of the administration of basic education at the
national level.
Central Office, Regional
Offices, Schools Division The Regional offices are responsible for the
regional and local coordination and
Offices (SDOs), and Schools administration of the Department's mandates.

The SDOs are responsible for the management

and supervision public elementary and
secondary schools in their respective divisions.

Schools are responsible for providing quality

basic education to learners.
Secretary of Education: The Secretary of Education is the highest-
ranking official in the Department of Education. This position is
responsible for setting the overall policies, direction, and vision for
the education system in the country.

Undersecretaries and Assistant Secretaries: These officials assist the

Secretary in various capacities, such as overseeing specific sectors of
education, implementing policies, and managing departmental
affairs.

Bureaus and Services: The Department of Education is divided into

several bureaus and services responsible for specific areas of
education, such as the Bureau of Elementary Education and the
Bureau of Secondary Education. These bureaus handle curriculum
development, teacher training, and other key functions.
This hierarchical structure
ensures that education policies
and programs are developed at
the national level, cascaded down
to the regional and division levels,
and ultimately implemented at
individual schools across the
country. It allows for coordinated
planning, monitoring, and
evaluation of educational
initiatives to improve the quality
of education in the Philippines.
In summary, the DepEd organizational structure,
guided by Republic Act No. 9155, is a testament to
the commitment of the Philippines to provide
accessible, quality and relevant education to all its
citizens. It is a work in progress, and as we move
forward, let us remain dedicated to the vision of an
empowered, informed and globally competitive
Filipino Society through education.
