Concept Notes Examples:

 Multiplying Decimals by Whole Numbers
Multiplying a decimal by a whole number will result to a product with the
same number of decimal places as to the given decimal.
Example 1: 4x1.2=___
1.2
1.2 1.2 1 decimal place
1.2 x 4
+ 1.2 4.8 1 decimal place
4.8
Example 2: Multiply 2.25 x 12
1
42.25 There are two decimal places They have the
X 12 This factor is a whole number same number
11 of decimal
84 50 places
+ 422 5
507.00 There are 2 decimal places in the product
Answer: 507
 Zero in the Product
Sometimes when we multiply decimals, we need to insert zeros in the
product to make the correct number of decimal places.
Example:

a. Multiply: 0.05 x 0.07 b. Multiply: 0.23 x 0.05

0.05 2 decimal places 0.23 2 decimal places
x 0.07 2 decimal places x 0.05 2 decimal places
0.0035 4 decimal places
0.0115 Insert 2 zeros to 4 decimal places
make 4 decimal
places Insert 1 zero to
make 4 decimal
places

Exercise/Practice/Drill

Find the product of the following numbers.

1. 0.06 2. 0.16 3. 4.38
X 0.03 X 0.05 X 12
MATHEMATICS 6
Week 5 Day 2

Objective To multiply decimals and mixed decimals with factors up to 2

decimal places

Concept Notes Examples:

To multiply decimals Ignore the decimal points and multiply as if they are whole
numbers. Place the decimal point in the product based on the total number of
decimal places in both factors.

Note: Count the number of decimal places from the right.

Example 1: A piece of paper measures 1.32 centimetres long and 1.83
centimetres wide. What is its area?
Find: 1.32 x 1.83 = n
1.32 2 decimal places
X 1.83 2 decimal places
396
1056
+ 132__
2.4156 4 decimal places

Example 2: Multiply 12.19 x 6.3

12.19 2 decimal places
X 6.3__ 1 decimal place
3657
+ 7314
76.797 3 decimal places

Exercise/Practice/Drill
Multiply:
1. 2.42 2. 83.42 3. 3.12
X 4.81 X 3.53 X 2.09
MATHEMATICS 6
Week 5 Day 3

Objective To multiply mentally decimals up to 2 decimals places by10,

and 100.

Concept Notes & Examples

To multiply a decimal by 10 and 100,

To multiply a decimal by 10, move the decimal point one place to the right, by
100 move the decimal point two places to the right. Or move the decimal point to
the right based on the number of zeros.
Example: 1
Read: John Vincent sells newspapers at P 18.50 per copy How much does he get
for 10 copies? 100 copies? Find: 10 x 18.50 = n; 100 x 18.50 = n
18.50 18.50
X 10 X 100
185.00 1 850.00
Compare the placement of the decimal point in the factor and the product.
Did it move to the left or to the right? How many places did the decimal point move
when we multiplied by 10? By 100?
Example 2: Here’s another way to find the products.
We see: We think:
10 x 18.50 = n 10 has one 0, so 18.50 185
100 x 18.5 =n 100 has two 0s, so 18.50 1850
Answer: John Vincent gets P185 for 10 copies, P 1,850 for 100 copies.

Consider the following examples:

5.17 x 10 = 51.7 move the decimal point one step to the right

5.17 x 100 = 517 move the decimal point two step to the right

0.01

Concept Notes & Examples

To multiply decimals by 0.1, 0.01.

Count the number of decimal places in the tenth and hundredth. Move the
decimal point to the left based on the number of decimal places.

Example 1: Consider the following examples:

5.17 x 0.1 = 0.517 move the decimal point 1 step to the left

5.17 x 0.01 =0.0517 move the decimal point two steps to the left

Example 2:
8.25 x 0.1 = 0.825
6.75 x 0.01 = 0.0675

Concept Notes & Examples

How do we solve word problems?

Steps in solving word problems:
A. Understand the problem
 what is asked in the problem
 identify the given data
 look for the hidden question(s), if any
B. Devise a plan
 What operation will you use first to answer the hidden question?
 What will you do to find the final answer?
C. Carry out the plan
 Solve
Example: Jason and Mark are best friends. One day, Mark borrowed money
from Jason. Jason lent him ₱35.00 consisting of 5-pesos and 25 centavo coins.
Jason gave 26 coins to his best friend. How many pieces of each coin did Jason
give to Mark?
 Understand.
a. What is asked?
The number of ₱5.00 coins and ₱0.25 coins Jason gave to Matk.
b. What are the given facts?
There are 26 coins-combination of ₱5.00 and ₱0.25. The total amount of the
coins is ₱35.00.
 Plan.
What operations shall we use to solve the problem? Select your own strategy.

Strategy: Guessing and checking can help us to solve this problem.

Solve. Show your computation.
Applying the strategy:
Guess 1 Check
21 25-centavo coins 21 x ₱0.25 = ₱5.25
₱30.25 < ₱35.00
5 5-peso coins 5 x ₱5.00 = + ₱25.00
₱30.25
Guess 2
20 25-centavo coins 20 x ₱0.25 = ₱5.00
₱35.00 = ₱35.00
6 5-peso coins 6 x ₱5.00 = + ₱30.00
₱35.00

Answer: Jason gave his best friend six pieces of ₱5 coins and twenty pieces of ₱25₵.
Check. To check our answer, we can go back to our calculation.

Exercise/Practice/Drill

Solve each problem.

1. A kilo of grapes cost ₱200.50. How much will you pay if you buy 3 kilos?
2. Crio consumed 1.956 liters of water in one day. How many liters of water can
Crio consume in one week?
