Preparing for an Interview

At the top of the interview u will be asked to introduce yourself, to do this well u will be telling the
interviewer a story as such it is important to structure this in the right way.

I know you have an agenda for this meeting, however I thought it will be useful if I could give you a walk
through of who I am and why I am excited to be meeting you today

1. Thank you for your time, Try to build some rapport with the interviewer to do so you establish a
connection this can be achieved by researching about your interviewer may be u went to same
university, same town, same language or grow up in same city or same anything. Just some
small talk before going down to the main business
2. Explain your role and the relevant educational and professional background ( this should be your
strong pitch)
3. Disscuss the key skills and expertise that you have which directly relate to this opportunity,
using measurable examples
4. Finally, describe what you are looking for in your next role and why this role at this organization
appeal to you

Some common interview question

 Why do u want to leave your current job. Don’t batch your current employer, focus on what you
want to do in your carrier and why this opportunity canhelp u achieve it
 What is your biggest weakness. I wish I can speak more than one language as others have to
change their language so I don’t understand what they are saying, that’s really a big weakness
that am trying to address
 Why do you want this job, do you need a turn over or are you often rejected you should think of
a strong reason why you want an offer as this could determine if you are getting it or not
 Can you tell me about a time that you failed. Thus is mostly judge by how you responded to the
failure and not bcos u failed
 Are you interviewing with any other company. Be honest about it bcos this can determine your
integrity if you end up with another better offer

Learn the STAR technique

 You may be asked situational and behavioral questions that are designed to discover how you
work
 For situational interview questions it is best to use the STAR technique method to structure your
answer
 This is a story telling method that will keep your responses clear and give the interviewer
everything they need to know
S - set Situation
T- explain your Task and Involvement
describe your Action
R- show off the Result, ensure it is measurable

On the day before your interview

 Confirm the time, location and plan your route


 Check the dress code even if you are meeting remotely
 Have a copy of your resume and job description ready
 Get into a positive mindset
 Switch off
 Get a good night rest

Make the best first impression possible

 Arrive there on time being 10 minute earlier is best


 Refresh your mind of the job description, your resume and any key note you have made
 Be polite to everyone you meet, turn your phone off, smile and don’t chew any gum
 If you are meeting face to face, wait professionally in the reception area, show interest in any
poster or marketing book lets that will teach you more about the organization
 For online interview, check that your tech is working, the computer battery is charged and you
have the correct details needed to join the meeting

Ensure you build a rapport with your interviewer

-Smile, -be positive, -remember their name, -consider your body language, -follow up with question

What not to do during interview

 Interrupt your interviewer


 Panic when you cant answer a question. The highest you could do is to tell them u will come
back to the question when you have been able to formulate your thought and idea about the

 Talk negatively about your current or former employer
 Misrepresent your self eg the use of chat gpt to form your resume thereby depicting you higher
than what you are capable of. This will tell in your interview
 Leave the interview in any doubts over your desire, you can overcome this by giving a closing
remark thus
 At the end of the interview you can leave a closing remark saying am really excited about this
now that am given the opportunity to know more about this role I really feel more excited to
accept this role than before I came in. do you have any doubt in my ability to do this job?
 Don’t be distracted, stay focused

What to do after your interview

 Reflect on how the interview went


 Talk to your recruiter after the interview
 Get back to work and get focus or get another job interview

Don’t

 Be hard to reach, not answering email


 Forget to update on your recruiter or employer
 Do anything to harm your reputation ie post online or linkedln

Keep the conversation going

 It is important to make sure that your correspondence with the hiring party doesn’t end once
your interview has finished. Eg send a linkedln connection the following day after your
interview. A day after that you can send in a thoughtful thank you message, thanking them for
the opportunity to sit with them. In another couple of days you might just think of the questions
asked in the interview and say you know what Chris in reflection I really wished I had said this..
or perhaps there is a question that you might want to ask
 Ask your recruiter to thank the interviewer and to clarify to them anything that you
didn’tcommunicate clearly during the interview
 Stay active on linkedln by engaging with content on the industry and share any news or stories
that are relevant to the role

Can you ask for you result after the interview?

Yes, you can. It all depends on how you structure your question. You can start by saying whether I get
the role with you or not am a kind of person who constantly love to improve myself I will greatly
appreciate the test result so I could see where I did well and where I could have done better so that I
could be able to do better next time am in similar situation
