The theme of the story ‘The Last Lesson’ is linguistic
chauvinism of the proud conquerors and the pain that is
inflicted on the people of a territory by them by taking
away the right to study or speak their own language
and thus make them aliens in their own land of birth.
2.What does The Last Lesson signify?
The story ‘The Last Lesson’ highlights the human
tendency that there is plenty of time to do things; hence,
man keeps postponing the lessons of life, oblivious to
the fact that life is subject to change. The last French
lesson taught by M. Hamel symbolizes the loss of
language and the loss of freedom for France.
3.What is significance of Lost Spring?
The title of the chapter ‘Lost Spring’ is a metaphor used
for loss of childhood of millions of child-laborers in India.
Spring is symbolic of joy, happiness, beauty, and hope.

Mukesh is a child labourer who Works in a glass bangle
making factory that is situated in Firozabad. Though
Mukesh belongs to a poor family which is engaged in
bangle making, he dreams of becoming a motor
mechanic when he grows up.

of three or four, when at a beach in California with his
father, he was knocked down and buried under water by
a wave. He felt breathless and very scared. This is when
he first developed a great aversion to water

because they look at interviews as an unwarranted
intrusion into their lives. They feel that it diminishes
them. They feel that they are wounded by interviews
and lose a part of themselves. They consider interviews
immoral and a crime, and an unwanted and unwelcome
interruption in their personal life
15.Why did Sophie enjoy living in a world of dreams
describe some of her dreams?
Sophie dreamt of opening a boutique or becoming an
actress or a fashion designer. She thought that she
would be offered the position of a manager and that
she would work there till the time she saves enough
money for her boutique.

Moreover, he was hardworking and practical who
prefered to live in reality rather than fantasies. On the
other hand, sophie was outspoken and day dreamer, she

The journey being to the extreme south of the
the earth, was really towards the end of it.
Another meaning of this title is more
significant as the warnings that Antarctica
gives are shocking and much concerning the
humanity and the millions of other species on
the earth.
22.What is the message of the journey to the
end of the Earth?
Tishani Doshi says that humans, especially
students/youth must visit Antarctica to
understand how was earth formed, what is
happening to it at the present, and what
consequences we might have to face in the
future if we don’t stop polluting our natural
resources.
23.How can you say that Sadao’s father was
very serious about his son s study?
The father of Sadao took his son’s future
seriously. He never made jokes or played
games with him. The education of his son was
his father’s first priority. Sadao was therefore
sent to America at the age of twenty-two to
learn everything there was to know about
surgery and medicine.
24.What is the theme of the enemy story?
‘The Enemy’ gives the message that humanism
transcends all man- made prejudices and
barriers. Dr. Sadao upholds the ethics of
medical profession in treating an enemy. The
story is a great lesson of peace, love, sympathy,
fellow feeling and humanism.

No one except Derry’s mother kisses him. She
too kisses him on the other side of the face. E
was always humiliated by people talking about
his face which was half burnt, so he didn’t
expect anyone to love him or kiss him. He has
developed a negative attitude and says he
does not care ‘ “if nobody ever kissed” him.
26.How did Mr Lamb motivate Derry?
Lamb inspires Derry by telling him not to focus
on the shortcomings of life and his handicap
and instead he should try to enjoy the blessings
of life. He tells him to be thankful to God for
two arms, two legs, two eyes and ears, a
tongue and a brain and advises him to be
friendly with everyone around him.

Bama was an innocent child who was spending
her childhood in a village. She used to walk
back home When school was over, she had to
do walking to reach home. Furthermore, the
normal duration of the walk was ten minutes.
However, she made her walk for a duration of
half an hour to one hour.

childhood?
Memories of Childhood is about the hardships
and atrocities faced by the marginalized
section of our society. It talks about the
injustices faced by them, irrespective of their
age, and the burden of belonging to lower
classes ridden on the shoulders of children.

1.What incident did Douglas face at the pool?
What was its effect on his life?
Douglas wanted to learn swimming at
Y.M.C.A. pool and for this purpose, he went to
the pool and waited for others. After some
minutes, a big bruiser of a boy came there,
probably eighteen years old, and threw
Douglas into the pool just for fun. But Douglas
did not know how to swim by that time. He
went to the bottom of the pool and during the
way, made a strategy to hit and jump and
swim to the edge. But everytime, his efforts
failed. No one was there to save his life, he
screamed but it was for no use. Finally, he
surrendered, and became drowsy and
unconscious. Then hardly, someone saved his
life from drowning. That incident affected his
life for a long time, He never went back to pool,
never went for fishing and cannoeing and then
later by inner inspiration, he learned swimming
and for clearing residual doubts, struggled a lot
of various risky locations and then he became
an expert swimmer.
2.What kind of indications do we get while
visiting Antarctica to save Earth?
Tishani Doshi’s entire experience of visiting
Antarctica was nothing short of a revelation. It
made her wonder about the “beauty of
balance in play on our planet”. She hopes the
new generation will understand their planet
better and save it from annihilation. The
planet’s ecosystem and its balance that took
millions of years to form can be soon
destroyed. Scientists warn that a further
depletion in the ozone layer will affect the
activities of the phytoplankton. The lives of the
marine animals and birds of the region will be
affected. But the school students’ visit to the
Antarctica may make human beings handle
their planet in a better way.
