Task 1
Work task: Complete a risk assessment for using power tools.
In this task you will document hazards, explain control measures to minimise hazards, and
note the people responsible for minimising the hazards, when using power tools.
The activity can be customised by your assessor to suit your work environment.
How to complete the task
In the template provided, list 12 power tools available in your workshop.
List all the risks and hazards each power tool could create.
List all prevention measures needed to reduce these hazards.
You can refer to relevant legislation related to workplace health and safety.

Task 2
Work task: Use hand tools
In this task, you will demonstrate your ability to use hand tools. The activity can be
customised by your assessor to suit your work environment.
How to complete the task
Assemble all work requirements before beginning the task.
Demonstrate a safety pre-check before beginning the task.
Perform the task as per the instructions and project plan on the next page.
Demonstrate clean up and maintenance of tools once the task is complete.

Instructions
Mark a piece of timber to a length of 150mm.
Mark another piece of timber to a 950mm length.
On the 150mm length, mark a centred rectangle 60mm long and 15mm deep
across the whole 90mm width of the piece of timber.
Using a hand saw and a chisel, cut out the 60mm long, 15mm deep and 90mm
wide checkout/ cut out. Keep measuring the depth of 15mm as you go.
Mark 2 checkouts/ cut outs on the 950mm length, to add hinges. Mark one 100mm
from one end, and the other 150mm from the other end. Make them 85mm long
and 35mm wide.
Chisel the 2 checkouts/ cut outs on the 950mm length, as marked to a depth to
suit door hinges.
Ask your assessor to check your work.
Demonstrate clean up and maintenance of tools once the task is complete.

Instructions
With a power saw, cut the 90x35mm timber marked at 150mm, to length.
With a power saw, cut the 90x35mm timber marked at 950mm to length.
Where marked at 30mm, cut the 950mm piece down the length so it becomes
60mm wide.
Use the power planner to plane the 950mm length so it is smooth and the edge is
even and straight.
Screw hinges on the 2 checkouts you made on the 950mm length in Task 2.
Check that the 950mm length fits inside the 60mm checkout on the 150mm length.
Slide it through the 150mm length.
If it doesn’t slide through, plane the 950mm length further until it does.
Ask your assessor to check your work.

Task 4
Work task: Plant and equipment
In this task, you will need to decide the power output needed from a portable generator as
there is no power on site. You will need a calculator to complete this task.
The tools and their power outage for 2 different jobs are listed below.
Fill in all the blank spaces to find out what size generator you will need in each instance.

Work task: Clean up
In this task, demonstrate the steps you would take to clean up a work area that another team
has left in a mess. This mess is dangerous and preventing you from starting your work.
