1.0 Project Introduction : SET PROJECT GOALS

Understanding your ‘why’ – your purpose for the project – will help you start to define
your project goals and increase the likelihood of a meaningful and successful project.

By knowing specifically what you want to accomplish, you won’t get distracted and try to
have it all – opting for things simply because everyone else has them or to please other
people. Instead, you can focus on a specific plan of action that will get you what you
specifically want.

These aren’t just goals about what the house looks like, but also how much it costs, how
it’s constructed, how it performs, how it adapts to your needs. These goals are wholly
dependent on what you want to achieve and what you want out of your new home.

The key is to understand your project goals and priorities. Then, let those goals dictate
how you make decisions. Getting the selection right the first time by selecting the
optimal combination for your home has enormous benefits and is why setting good
project goals in the first place is so important. Once you understand where your
priorities are and what’s most important to you, you can use those to guide your
decision.

And complete Tutorial 1 and Tutorial 2 .

2.0 My Dream House ............................................................................................... 1

Describe your Dream House. WHY the design is unique to you and WHY you have
arrived at each and EVERY design decision. Reasoning for your choices of all elements
like location, materials, characteristics and sustainable technologies .

2.1 Location ..................................................................................................... 2

Specify the location of your dream home and give reasons for your selection.
Include google map screenshots , describe the characteristics of the location . you
know that the information you provide will feed into your design and material
considerations. Eg. Soil characteristics , climate consideration , adjacent structures
,land use, neighbourhood , community , infrastructure ..etc

2.2 Materials .................................................................................................... 2

2
Civil Eng Comm Dream home

The relationship of cost to quality to schedule, and the seemingly infinite material
choices available are important criteria to consider when evaluating the suitability
of materials, products, and finishes for your home project.

factors MUST be viewed through the lens of your particular project and your
particular situation. What is important to you may be less important to someone
else. Cost may be a big driver in the selection process for some people but
aesthetics and sustainability may be more important to others.

Material selection Consideration should be holistic and reflective of the entire

project life cycle , describe your material selection and how it works for each of the
following stages:

o Feasibility phase : Building functional requirement

o Design phase
o Construction phase
o Maintenance

For guidance, log into blackboard/ CIVIL ENGINEERING CONSTRUCTION /

learning material/ Sustainability & Construction.

2.3 House Characteristics ................................................................................. 2

Based on the goal you have set in the beginning of your project , your home
characterise should be inline with it . describe the spaces , and how they connect .

2.4 Sustainable Technologies ........................................................................... 2

Based on the goal you have set in the beginning of your project , the sustainable
Technology you select should be in line with it.

3.0 House Layout..................................................................................................... 3

There are a few basic steps to creating a floor plan:

o Choose an area. Determine the area to be drawn. ...
o Take measurements. If the building exists, measure the walls, doors,
and pertinent furniture so that the floor plan will be accurate. ...
o Draw walls. ...
o Add architectural features. ...
o Add furniture.
o Include a Floor plan of each floor .
o Include an Autocad drawing of your own , or an image you reference
from a source and reflect in your list of references under imagines ”

For guidance on referencing images, log into blackboard /CIVIL ENGINEERING

COMMUNICATION/ learning material / referencing.

4.0 Hand Drawings .................................................................................................. 4

Good quality, proportionally hand drawn sketches showing the overall concept.
Hand drawn two point perspective sketches showing elevations complete with
descriptive text of materials and finishes.
Hand drawn sketches of your structure showing type of actions on structure,
direction of forces and the structural behaviour of the elements.

Directly related to Task 6.0

5.0 Electronic Drawings .......................................................................................... 5

This portion of your report will require the use of SKETCHUP , under Civil
Engineering communication / learning material/Sketchup , you will find a series of
tutorials that will help you create a 3d image of your dream house.

Note: Any design softwear will suffice.

6.0 Structural Behaviour ......................................................................................... 6

Describe how the structure moves & how it resists forces. It depends on the
structural element chosen for the structure and the forces this element is capable
of withstanding.
The loaded behaviour of structural elements is dependent on internal and
external forces.

Describe the path of forces. This can be done after you determine the above.

Use the provided Template as a starting point , if your building is symmetrical ,

the weight distribution will be similar to that in the template provided .

For guidance , go to Blackboard/Civil Engineering Communication/ learning

material/structural behaviour.

Include at least ten references in your text using Endnote. Insert the citations into
the text, and include a list of references as the last section of the document.
Referencing and citation must be APA 6th compliant.
