Title of Speech: Why Parents Should Monitor Their Children Internet Usage.

Specific Purpose Statement: To persuade my audience about Why Parents Should Monitor

Their Children Internet Usage.

Central Idea: To protect them from meeting online predators, exposure to the

inappropriate content and can guide children towards responsible

and healthy digital habits.

I. INTRODUCTION:

A. Attention Grabber/Getter: Why parents should monitor their children’s internet

usage? In today's interconnected world, the internet has become an integral part of

our daily lives. It has revolutionized the way we communicate, learn, and interact with

the world around us. However, as a powerful tool, the internet comes with its own set

of risks and challenges, particularly for children. So, it is more important than ever

especially for parents to take an active role in monitoring their children's internet

usage. By doing so, we can ensure their safety.

B. Reveal Topic: I would like to persuade why parents should be vigilant in monitoring

their children’s internet activities. First, we will explore how by monitoring our children

internet usage can protect them from meeting online predators. Then we will discuss

how the internet can lead children to the exposure of inappropriate content. Finally,

we will delve into how by monitoring children internet usage can guide children

towards responsible and healthy digital habits.

2
C. Credibility Statement: But before we embark on this journey together, I want to

assure you of the credibility behind the information I will be sharing. While I may not

have personal experiences about being a parent, I do have a little brother and sister

and I have extensively researched this topic, drawing from reputable sources such

as, expert advice, and the stories of those who have experienced having a kid. The

points that I'll be sharing are grounded in well-established knowledge and

experiences of others who have walked this path.

D. Preview of main points: So, what can you expect from today's discussion? In the

moments ahead, we will explore how by monitoring our children internet usage can

protect them from meeting online predators. Then we will discuss how the internet

can lead children to the exposure of inappropriate content. Finally, we will delve into

how by monitoring children internet usage can guide children towards responsible

and healthy digital habits.

3
II. BODY

Connective: Let’s begin with the first point.

A. Main point 1: To protect them from meeting online predators.

Evidence: According to the NCMEC's "CyberTipline 2020 Report," they received and

reviewed over 21.7 million reports of online child exploitation in 2020 alone. These

reports encompassed various forms of child sexual abuse, including instances involving

online predators.

Explanation: Who and what are online predators? Online predators are individuals who

target children to engage in child sexual abuse. These predators use various online

platforms such as chat rooms, internet messaging, social networking, and video games

to establish relationships with their victims. They employ manipulation and build trust

with the intention of exploiting children for their own gratification. This exploitation may

involve requesting explicit photos or videos, or even attempting to meet the victims in

person. The consequences of falling victim to an online predator can be devastating for

children. The emotional and psychological impact can be long-lasting, leading to trauma,

feelings of guilt or shame, and damaged self-esteem. In extreme cases, it can result in

physical harm or even death. It is crucial for parents, educators, and society to be aware

of the dangers posed by online predators and take proactive measures to protect

children from these heinous acts.

Minor conclusion: So, Monitoring enables parents to detect any suspicious or

inappropriate online interactions their children may have, allowing for timely intervention

and protection from potential dangers.

4
Connective: Then we will discuss how the internet can lead children to the exposure of

inappropriate content.

B. Main point 2: The internet can lead children to the exposure of inappropriate content.

Evidence: The Pew Research Center conducted a survey in 2016 that found that 67%

of teens aged 13 to 17 reported being exposed to explicit or age-inappropriate content

online, including violent imagery and pornography. The study highlights the prevalence

of such content and the potential for accidental exposure among young internet users.

Explanation: As we know, the internet is filled with a wide range of explicit or age-

inappropriate content, including violent imagery, pornography, or graphic material.

Children may come across such content accidentally while searching for innocent or

unrelated topics. Furthermore, prolonged exposure to explicit and age-inappropriate

content can lead to a range of negative outcomes for children. It may contribute to the

development of unhealthy attitudes towards sexuality, relationships, and body image.

The normalization of explicit content can blur the lines between fantasy and reality,

distorting their understanding of appropriate boundaries and healthy social interactions.

This can have lasting effects on their emotional well-being and impact their future

relationships. Therefore, it is crucial for parents, educators, and society to actively

monitor and restrict children's access to explicit content, providing them with age-

appropriate resources and guidance to promote a positive and healthy online

experience.

Minor conclusion: By doing so, we can help children maintain their innocence,

preserve their emotional health, and foster a healthy understanding of appropriate online

boundaries.

5
Connective: Finally, we will delve into how by monitoring children internet usage can

guide children towards responsible and healthy digital habits.

C. Main point 3: Monitoring children internet usage can guide children towards

responsible and healthy digital habits.

Evidence: In a 2020 survey by Pew Research Center, 64% of parents with teenagers

reported monitoring their child's online activities. Active monitoring was associated with

increased discussions about internet use and risks, promoting safer and responsible

online habits.

Explanation: By monitoring their online activities, parents can become aware of the

websites, apps, and platforms their children are using. This enables them to have

informed conversations about appropriate behavior, potential risks, and responsible

internet use. Monitoring allows parents to establish clear guidelines and boundaries for

internet usage. They can set time limits, determine appropriate content, and discuss

rules for online communication. These boundaries help children understand their

limitations and develop self-control. By setting limits and monitoring the time spent

online, parents can ensure a balanced lifestyle for their children. It encourages them to

engage in other activities like outdoor play, reading, and spending quality time with

family and friends.

Minor conclusion: By doing active monitoring and guidance parents can empower their

children to navigate the digital landscape, ensuring a safe and enriching online

experience while nurturing their overall growth and happiness.

6
III. CONCLUSION

I. Summary statement: In summary, this persuasive speech highlights the

importance of actively monitoring children's online activities to protect them from

online predators, minimize exposure to inappropriate content, and promote

healthy digital habits. By implementing measures such as setting boundaries,

engaging in open communication, and staying informed, we can create a safer

and more secure online environment for our children, ensuring their well-being in

the digital age.

II. Call to action: As we conclude, let us take action to protect our children in the

digital world. I urge parents, educators, and society to prioritize online safety.

Stay vigilant, actively monitor children's online activities, and engage in open

conversations about responsible internet use. Let us implement parental controls,

utilize filtering tools, and support initiatives that promote online safety education.

Together, we can create a secure online environment for our children, shielding

them from online predators, minimizing exposure to inappropriate content, and

fostering healthy digital habits. Act now to ensure the well-being of our future

generation in the ever-evolving digital landscape. Thank you.
