Rite of Blessing of a New Church or Public Oratory
1. The priest ought to be delegated by the Ordinary to bless a new church or
oratory as a the place where the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is to be celebrated.
He is vested with the amice, alb, cincture with a white stole and cope. In the
morning, with the other clergy following the Cross surmounted by two acolytes
bearing candles, the celebrant goes to the main entrance of the church or doors
of the chapel. There before the open doors he begins immediately with the
prayer:
Actiónes nostras, quaesumus, Dómi- We beseech Thee, O Lord that pre-
ne, aspirándo præveni, et adjuvándo cede our actions in their inspiration,
proséquere: ut cuncta nostra orátio and help them in their execution: that
et operátio a te semper incipiat, et all our prayer and action might be-

3. The Church must be bare and empty, as well as the altar unvested and the
faithful remain outside of the church until it is blessed.

While the psalm is being sung the celebrant and clergy process around the
exterior of the church, the priest taking the aspergil of hyssop. The priest going
to his right will sprinkle with Holy Water the exterior of the building, the upper
walls and foundations..

4. When the procession returns to doors, the antiphon is repeated and the priest

12. When all this is done, the Mass is said in honor of the Mystery or Saint, in
whose honor the church is blessed; but when the Office or Mass occurs, except
for a serious reason, the Mass is said also on the day of the commemoration,
according to the rubrics of the Missal.

parochial churches even if they are blessed by a simple priest, as above, must
