CHAPTER I
PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the study

The use of computers has a significant impact on education because it is now an integral part

of every person's life and is included in school curriculum, Computers can be used for online

education, and computer education in schools plays a significant and notable role in the

career development of young students. Students can use the internet to acquire helpful

information concerning their homework and projects. (Sharna Kajal, 2023)

Many high school students learn the fundamentals of using a computer, including how to

send emails, conduct Internet searches, create word processing documents, and make

presentations. Computers and computer devices have evolved to play important roles in

schools. When used to process and present information, these fundamental computer skills

assist students in succeeding in school. (Lowe Jennie, 2021)

The rising usage of computers by academics and students alike is a key indicator of

technology advancement in the academic setting. The computer is a digital tool that receives,

processes, stores, and outputs data in a meaningful way. Today, computers are widely used in

all spheres of human activity, particularly in educational institutions. As a result, learning

computer skills is necessary for students to use computers efficiently. (JETIR, 2023)

More and more schools are utilizing computers, and

K–12 students increasingly see skills as a requirement for education, reflecting their

importance in the world outside of the classroom. (Mbaeze, Ukwandu, & Anugu, 2010)

It is simpler to perform regular assignments and tasks and productivity is increased when one

has fundamental knowledge of computer skills. (Indeed, 2023)

1
The basic computer skill aims to equip learners with the fundamental knowledge and skills

necessary to succeed in the digital age. Learners will be able to use technology effectively

and efficiently, while also being aware of the ethical and social implications of technology in

society.

As we live in a digital age, it is a must for Grade 10 learners at NIS to acquire the basic

necessary knowledge and computer skills. These skills will not only enhance their academic

performance but will also prepare them for the ever-evolving digital world they will be

entering.

Statement of the Problem

This study seeks to recognize the basic computer skills and knowledge that will enhance the

academic performance of Grade 10 learners at Narra Integrated School.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following question:

1. What is the importance of having basic computer skills and knowledge?

2. What are the basic computer skills of Grade 10 learners that will help them to

enhanced their academic performance.

3. How will the basic computer skills and knowledge of the Grade 10 learners will

enhance their academic performance?

Scope and Delimitation

This study will only cover the basic computer skills and knowledge of the grade 10 learners

at Narra Integrated School that will enhance their academic performance.

2
Significance of the study

The researchers believes that this study will be helpful to the readers to gain more knowledge

about the use of basic computer skills to enhance the academic performance of the students.

Specifically, the study is beneficial to the following;

Students

This study will help students because once their computer skills is determined they can

develop skills that will enhance their academic performance Also, this study can serve as a

guide for future researchers conducting related research.

Teacher

This study will help teachers to know more about the student’s potential in using their

computer skills and knowledge.

Parents

This study will help parents to be aware about their children’s capability.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Review of Related Literature

As society today becomes more and more reliant on new technology, computer literacy is

receiving more and more attention, and it is just as important in the current information age

as reading, writing, and calculus were in the 19th and 20th centuries. (Saparniene, 2019)

“Computer learning programs gives students the opportunity to expand their horizons to learn

skills they would not have the centers are available to students, regardless of what

neighborhood, city, or country they come from.” (Sahar Intern, 2017)

Computer usage necessitates the development of several technical and cognitive

skills, such as problem-solving skills, and the capacity to comprehend text and symbols, all of

which are not necessarily clear to persons with a basic understanding of how to use

computers. Computer knowledge used to be a skill set that was optional. A necessary ability

for success in school, job, and daily life is computer literacy. (MathGenie, 2018)

A nation's growth and development are significantly influenced by its educational system.

The development of 21st-century skills among students is one of the main focuses of today's

educational problems since globalization and internalization of education are in fact issues

that every country must sustain with the growth of science and technology. (Darin Jan T.,

John Michael B., & Jay-ar C., 2017)

Information technology has had a profound impact on today's globe, forcing society

as a whole to embark on an involved digitization process. The digital advantage that

preserves competitiveness is the ability to quickly adapt to the demands of digital technology;

nevertheless, this chance may also be turned into a micro- or macroeconomic growth vector.
4
Technology is not the next frontier in enhancing production and growth; rather, it is digital

skills. (Moustakas, 2018)

Computer skills, from fundamentals like typing assignments to more complex abilities

like coding, are not only "nice to haves," but rather a must for all students to succeed in the

era of digital technology. (Zhong, 2022)

Students must possess life skills, media literacy, and learning skills in order to

succeed in 21st-century learning. The use of technology tools and tactics in the school

curriculum is integrated to help students, particularly those with special needs or Special

Needs Students (SNS), gain these abilities. According to research, students’ poor digital

literacy abilities make it difficult for them to succeed in the digital learning environment. In

the digital world, developing as an independent student requires strong digital literacy

abilities. Digital literacy abilities have showed a favorable effect on student performance,

according to earlier studies. (Abdul Jalil Toha Tohara, et. al., 2021)

The learning ecosystem in a higher education setting is one that advances technology-

enabled platforms to combine digital technology with teaching and learning methods as a key

educational innovation. (Eze, Chinedu-Eze, & Bello, 2018)

Probably increasing pupils' understanding of and proficiency with computers can

enable them to do better in school.

“Technology provides access to a wide range of educational materials that can

promote self-learning and the development of new skills (Bulman & Fairlie, 2016; Jo Shan,

2013). Nevertheless, the impact of technology on academic performance depends on how

students use this tool to enhance their knowledge” (Tamim et al., 2014).

5
“Students with computers or the internet at home had better academic performance and a

higher average score on the Saber 11 test and PISA” (Castro Aristizabal et al., 2015; Posada

& Mendoza, 2014).

There is strong evidence that employing technology in the classroom improves student

learning and academic results. According to previous studies, students in classrooms where

every student has a personal computer engage in more collaborative work, take part in more

project-based learning, produce writing that is of higher quality and length, have greater

access to information, develop their research analysis skills, and spend more time doing

homework on computers. Additionally, studies have shown that these kids take a more active

role in their education, rely more on active learning techniques, are more adept at problem-

solving and critical thinking, and regularly make deeper and more creative use of technology

than students who do not have their own computers. (Gulek, J. C., & Demirtas, H., 2005)

“The impact of laptops after one year was at best marginal on achievement on mathematics,

science, and writing and that technology literacy has big contribution to education.” (Kara,

2015)

The Philippines should not left behind when it comes to applying educational technology

because a responsible use of computers, tablets, cellphones, and other devices can greatly

enhance the learning capablity of students. (John Paul S., 2016)
