Huatung Choir Camp’s 10th Year

“When you sing well on stage, we will applaud you, and if you forget your lyrics, we will give you an even greater
applause!” - Huatung Choir Camp

Huatung Choir Camp is now in its tenth year. Chair Stanley Yen shared his support for hosting the
summer camp, "During the summer holidays, Junyi School of Innovation’s dormitories are empty. By
organizing the camp at the school, students from different backgrounds can come here, engage in a
few days of interaction and genuine communication with others, learn to care for the world, and
experience more diverse aspects of 'being' and 'living.'"

The camp's participants do not need exceptional singing skills; they only need to have a passion for
singing. Through choral activities, themed courses, and camp life, they make friends from different
backgrounds. After the camp ends, many participants and volunteers eagerly look forward to returning
the following year. The camp has a certain magic, with an 80% return rate for this year's volunteers,
and participants learn a year's worth of life education in just 13 days. Read more.

The Alliance Cultural Foundation:

Japanese Cooking Program, Guidance & Specialized Teaching

Between 2011 and 2014, The Alliance Cultural Foundation (ACF) brought hospitality and tourism
programs into National Cheng Kung Commercial & Aquaculture Senior Vocational High School in
Taitung assisting in the development of its guidance and specialized teaching programs. 2023, in an effort
to equip students with practical skills and enhance the professional expertise of teachers, ACF introduced
a series of 20 Japanese cooking classes into the new semester. Junyi School of Innovation’s Resident
Director Patrick Su, Shin Yeh Restaurant’s Master Qiu Youxian, and Chef Wang Hongyi led the classes
throughout the first month of the school year.

Su shared his decades of experience in the hospitality industry with teachers and students, while also
encouraging students to go back to basics—to seek out professional role models, cultivate observation
skills, learn foreign languages, and maintain a positive attitude. The Japanese cooking program covers
topics such as food preparation, knife skills, and characteristics of ingredients. Chef Wang, in particular,
shared the importance for chefs to maintain clean appearances in open kitchens and shared the uses of
different kitchen tools and knife sharpening techniques. He emphasized the idea that “a worker must first
sharpen his tools,” encouraging students to take responsibility for their own tools.

Exploring Museum Best Practices, Insights from Chiayi & Tainan Art
Museums

On September 22-23, in an effort to support the operations of the Paul Chiang Art Center, the ACF team
visited Chiayi Art Museum, Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum, and Tainan Art Museum to
learn from and gather valuable insights from the museums.

Before the visits, the team divided into groups to research various aspects of the museums, including
marketing, public services, ticketing, volunteer training, and exhibition planning. During the visits, Chiayi
Art Museum shared that the architect had relocated the main entrance from a relatively small area to a
larger central courtyard, making it easier to accommodate more visitors. Tainan Art Museum shared their
experiences in public services, audience engagement, and educational outreach. They positioned
themselves as an "art museum for the people," welcoming various types of art exhibitions and
collaboration models. The fractal roof design of their building provided a unique viewing experience, akin
to viewing art under the shade of a large tree.

Special thanks to the staff members at Chiayi Art Museum and Tainan Art Museum, who not only made
time to welcome the ACF team but also shared their valuable experiences. Special thanks to ACF
volunteer Marie Lin for her assistance in planning the museum tours.

Junyi School of Innovation:

Teachers' Journey of Ocean Education and Cultural Exploration

The Taitung Austronesian team, consisting of 19 Taiwanese paddlers, made its debut in the
50th Queen Lili'uokalani Canoe Race in early September. Among the paddlers were three teachers from
Junyi School of Innovation’s Outdoor Education program—teachers Rahic Sra, Scott Huang, and Shine
Juang. Under the guidance of Hawaiian canoe master Kimokeo Kapahulehua, they successfully completed
the race; they also had the opportunity to visit the Polynesian Voyaging Society.

They brought back to Taiwan their learnings in ocean education and cultural heritage, and shared their
insights with students and colleagues. Teacher Rahic Sra reflected, "Taiwan considers itself an island
nation or the homeland of the Austronesian language family, but we have become somewhat distant from
the ocean." He cited the words of Sakinu, founder of the Hunter School, encouraging students and himself
to "become paddlers of ocean culture and education."

In the upcoming school year's outdoor education classes, teachers introduced students to the experience of
paddling outrigger canoes for the first time. Water-themed lessons also focused on "coexisting with
marine ecology," helping students understand the importance of harmonious coexistence with nature while
learning about water safety. Through these activities, they aimed to see the connection between Taiwan's
Austronesian heritage and the wider world.

Junyi School of Innovation:

Student Planned Pop-up Event Celebrating Teachers’ Day

To celebrate Teachers' Day, high school students organized a special pop-up event. On the morning of
September 27th, students distributed handwritten invitation cards to their teachers, inviting all faculty
members to gather on the second-floor terrace for an enjoyable performance.

Students expressed their gratitude to their teachers through a variety of performances, including self-
composed songs accompanied by guitars, solo dances, and a meticulously rehearsed group dance.
Although the performance lasted only 30 minutes, students had been planning and practicing since the
start of the school year, dedicating their after-school hours to create unforgettable Teachers' Day
memories.
