1. DEFINITION OF ADVERBIAL CLAUSE

Adverbial Clause is a Dependent Clause which functions as an Adverb and provides


information about the Verb, Adjective, or Adverb which is in an Independent Clause with
the capacity to answer questions such as: How, When, where, and why. Adverbial clauses
are preceded by a subordinate conjunction (after, because, when, although, and so).

2. TYPES ADVERBIAL CLAUSE


1) Clause of Time
is an adverb that shows time, the connecting words (conjunctions) are
when, before, after, since, as long as, until, till, hardly, scarcely, no sooner, etc.
 I come to your house when she wants to go out
 I can see you when I finish my work
 Since I live here since I enter to STAIN
 They hiked before they ate dinner
2) Conditional Closure
Is an adverb that is usually used to express the possibility and
consequences of an event. The connecting words are; if, unless, lest.
 if they lose weight during an illness, they soon regain it afterwards.
 You'll succeed, if you do your best
 You won't be rich unless you work hard.
3) Clause of Purpose
Is an adverb used to indicate the purpose of an action. The connecting
words are in order to, so that, in order that.
 they had to take same of his land so that they could extend the churchyard.
 People eat nutritious food so that they will keep healthy.
 Susan takes a computer lesson in order that she can get a job easily.
4) Clause of Reasons
Is an adverb used to show the reason for something. The connecting words
are: because, since, as, given.
 I coulden't feel anger against him because I like him too much.
 Bella doesn't go to school because she is sick.
 Since it's raining so heavily, I can't go out.
5) Clause of Results.
Is an adverb used to show the result of something. The connecting words
are: so... that.
 my suitcase had become so damaged on the journey home that the lid
would not stay closed.
 She is so short that she can't become a stewardess.
 She studies so hard that she is successful in her study.
6) Clause of Contrast/Concession
is an adverb used to make two statements, one of which contrasts with the
other. (Opposition between two related events. The connecting words are:
although, though, while.
 I use to read a lot although I don't get much time for books now.
 He is still poor although he has worked so hard.
 Though Even though I don't have much money, I will try to help him.
7) Clause of Place
Is an adverb used to show the place or location of something. The
connecting words are: where, wherever, anywhere, etc.
 he said he was happy where he was.
 You may go wherever you like.
 Wherever you are, I'll be able to find you.
8) Clause of Manners.
Is an adverb used to talk about someone's behavior or the way something
is done. The connecting words are: as, like, the way.
