Tutorial 7

(1) Two dice are rolled, find the probability that the sum is
a) equal to 1; b) equal to 4; c) less than 13. (Ans: a) 0; b) 1/12; c) 1.)

(2) A die is rolled and a coin is tossed, find the probability that the die
shows an odd number and the coin shows a head

(3) A bag I contains 4 white and 6 black balls while another Bag II
contains 4 white and 3 black balls. One ball is drawn at random
from one of the bags, and it is found to be black. Find the prob-
7
ability that it was drawn from Bag I. (Ans: 12 ) Hint: Use Bayes rule.

(4) Define random variable, discrete and continuous random variables

giving five examples of each.

(5) Discuss the differences between discrete variables and continuous

variables with appropriate examples.

(6) A new board game uses an eight-sided die. Suppose the die is rolled
once, what is the probability of getting
a) an even number ?
b) a number less than or equal to 5?
c) an even number greater than 5?

(7) Let X be the number of years before a certain kind of pump needs
replacement. Let X have the probability function f (x) = kx3 , x =
0, 1, 2, 3, 4. Find k.

(8) Let X (millimeters) be the thickness of washers. Assume that X has

the density f (x) = kx if 0.9 < x < 1.1 and 0 otherwise. Find k.
What is the probability that a washer will have thickness between
0.95 mm and 1.05 mm?
