FOLD ON
MY HEART
HP Spectre Fold
Guinness World Records is home to some
fairly niche achievements. For example,
earlier this year, Kimberly Winter’s
107.3dB burp set a new record for the
loudest by a woman – that’s noisier
than an electric drill. Well, soon you might
see another, less gassy new entry: HP’s
Spectre Fold, as the world’s smallest and
thinnest 17in foldable PC.
There’s some pretty serious power
packed into its 8.5mm chassis too: a
12th-gen Intel Core i7-1250U processor,
16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. It’s also
a real shapeshifter. Fully unfurled you can
use it as a giant tablet; a built-in kickstand
turns it into a makeshift desktop; and if you
fold it halfway with the bundled keyboard
over the bottom half of the touchscreen,
it becomes a 12.3in laptop.
It’s not quite a fourth way, but if you then
slide the QWERTY towards you to reveal
a flat slice of extra OLED it’ll increase your
multitasking options, plus with Windows
11 Home on board it’ll run all the full-fat
apps and software you throw at it. The one
big drawback? That five-grand price is
surely a world record in itself.

Smart Glasses
If you walked down the street in Meta’s
new Quest 3 VR headset (reviewed on
p70), people would assume you were
either a busker doing Daft Punk covers or
an escapee from a secure unit. But nobody
would give you a second look if you were
wearing these smart glasses.
They’re slimmer and lighter than the old
Ray-Ban Stories, and Meta has improved
the built-in camera so you now get much
better 12MP photos and 1080p video from
the ultra-wide lens. You can even send
those photos to people using voice
commands, or livestream to Instagram
and Facebook.
A five-mic array records audio so you
should be able to pick out where noises
are coming from when you review your
footage, while the louder, bassier speakers
are supposed to leak less sound. Power
comes from Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon
AR1 Gen1, and when you include the eight
charges that you get from the case the
battery should last up to 36hrs – with 32GB
of storage enough for over 500 photos or
100 videos of somebody in a VR headset
playing Get Lucky on a traffic cone.

earholes. You don’t need to feed
them special files either: it’ll work
its magic on standard stereo files.

There are two Immersive Audio

when you’re sitting in one place

keeping the audio just out in front
of you. Add CustomTune, which
personalises both the audio and
the company’s famous active

The emergence of flexible screens has brought the clamshell form factor back in
recent years, but there’s still something undeniably retro about a phone that folds
in the middle like Nokia’s 2660. Not only does it look old-skool with its 2.8in display
and big buttons, but its features will take you back to a time when we didn’t all carry
a camera, sat-nav, TV and the entire internet in our pockets. It does have a 0.3MP
camera for suitably low-res photos, but apart from that it’s just calls, texts, a torch
and an FM radio, meaning the battery life can be measured in days rather than hours.
So it’ll probably be 2024 before it even needs plugging in to be charged.
