What is SOCIAL ISSUES?

A social issue is an issue that affect the
people within the society. Different people
have different perception in life and this can
lead to the conflict of opinions. In the
Philippine history, the most prominent social
issues that happened and still happening are
abortion, poverty and inequality, depression,
addiction, discrimination, gender issues,
racial injustice, war on terrorism, revolt, and
many more.

Social Issues in Philippine

History

Poverty and Inequality

A major problem in the Philippines. The
percentage of families residing below the
official poverty line has steadily and
unevenly decreased over the last four
decades. Inequality on the other hand, it
seems like it will never get lost in the
society. From the Datus and Alipins before
(or even way before it), up to the Politicians,
Rich, and Poor in the present, there will
always be an inequality.

Abortion
it is still illegal in the Philippines
until today. One of the reasons why
it is still illegal is because the
Philippines’ centered religion is
Christianism and the Bible forbids
abortion. Lately, it is one of the hot
topics in the society and people are
debating with different opinions.

Addiction
In 1972, the drug problem was just
at its incipient stage, with only
20,000 drug users and marijuana as
the top choice among the users in
the Philippines. This was the drug
scenario when Republic Act 6425,
otherwise known as the “Dangerous
Drugs Act of 1972” was approved on
March 30, 1972.

War on terrorism
It has changed the lives of Filipinos as the
Filipinos has fought terrorism over the
years. It is currently on an upswing after
reaching high peaks in the early and late
1970s, and again in the mid-1980s, and a
low point in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) emerged in
