October 2023
Sustainable Management:
Bonaire is an island municipality of the Netherlands located in the
Southern Caribbean. The island provides a natural habitat on land
or sea and is home to different racial and ethnic-influenced
communities. Bonaire managed to sustain its destination by
providing a solid framework, decision-making, and planning. To
have effective and sustainable management, Bonaire hired and
trained new personnel and funded workshops, volunteer programs,
and other staffing requirements. They also gather funds, monitor
nature and marine conservation areas, and communicate and
cooperate with stakeholders through different forms of media.

The Bonaire National Marine Park (BNMP) allows stakeholders and

other interest groups to understand and participate in the planning
process for protecting the island’s unique marine resources and
managing the cultural and historical resources that will benefit the
current and future generations.

Maximizing social economic benefits to the local

community and minimizing negative impacts:
Bonaire has an increasing number of tourist arrivals because
of its popular activities. The increase in tourist arrivals also
results in a negative impact on the place. In order to deal
with the negative impact, Bonaire developed infrastructures
for tourists to stay and cooperate with stakeholders resulting
in economic growth and this benefits the economy because
this provides jobs and opportunities for the local
communities.

Maximizing benefits to cultural heritage and

minimizing negative impact:
In Bonaire National Marine Park culture is an important part
of their community. They are good at preserving culture and
conducting traditions and old crafts. Visitors had a wonderful
experience because of the speakers who shared stories about
their crafts and other activities about the cultural event in
preserving the intangible heritage of Bonaire. With this event,
they still managed to protect their culture by providing
awareness to their visitors.

Maximizing benefits to the environment and

minimizing negative impacts:
STINAPA Bonaire manages the islands and marine parks. They
have protected the marine park and other activities for over 4
years. The negative impact is that despite its undisputed
success, Bonaire has never had a formal management plan.
The park needed a management plan to better define the
goals and objectives of the park. They assist both staff and
board by providing a solid framework for reference,
decision-making, and planning.
