1. What is Literature ?

 Literature is a vast and complex field of study, encompassing an array of writing styles
ranging from poetry to prose. Furthermore, literature is not just a reflection of society
and its values, but also a medium through which people can explore different
perspectives and ways of thinking.
One common way to classify literature is based on genre, which refers to the type or
category of literary work. Genres can be defined according to their subject matter, form,
structure or intended audience.

2. What is World Literature ?

 World literature is a term that refers to literary works from different cultures and
countries around the globe.
 It encompasses literary traditions and works from diverse regions, including Africa, Asia,
Europe, North America, South America, and Oceania. World literature has been a
subject of increased interest and study, as it provides not only insight into the literary
traditions of various cultures but also fosters cross-cultural understanding and empathy.
 This field of study has been popularized by literary scholars and critics such as David
Damrosch, who believes that world literature is a means of connecting people and
cultures across the globe.

3. Give the Periods of Literature (name, dates/ years and state its contribution to the people).

 Periods of literature refer to distinct historical eras characterized by dominant literary

styles, themes, and forms. These periods are often used to categorize and analyze works
of literature based on the styles, ideologies, and cultural contexts present during their
creation.
 One approach to standardizing periods of literature is through the use of a centralized
gazetteer like PeriodO, which defines a data model that includes thespatial and
temporal aspects of literary periods, as well as their associated cultural contexts. This
approach allows for the creation of standardized period definitions that can be used
across different scholarly domains and research projects.
 Another approach to periodization is through the use of established literary movements,
such as Romanticism or Modernism, which provide a framework for understanding the
evolution of literature within a particular historical context.

Part 2 - Valuing the Value of Literature

1. why literature important?

 Literature has been an integral part of human culture for centuries, serving as a means
to convey stories, ideas, and emotions. It provides a window into different cultures and
time periods, allowing us to gain insight into the values, beliefs, and struggles of past
generations. Furthermore, literary works that are displayed through language have two
functions: to entertain and educate. As such, the function of literature must be
beautiful, meaningful, and entertaining while also teaching the reader something good.

2. why literature is in the curriculum

 Literature has been an integral part of the curriculum for centuries, with many
educators and scholars emphasizing its importance in not only enhancing language skills
but also in
 developing critical thinking, empathy, and cultural understanding. Although literature
education has had a long-standing and important position in basic education,
unfortunately, for some time now, many educational institutions have either not
recognized its importance or have not effectively highlighted its role in basic education.
