1. A rod is moving with a speed of 0.

4c in +X direction and a particle is moving with

a speed of 0.8c in opposite direction. The length of the rod is 3.6 meter in rest frame.
Calculate:
(a) the relative velocity in particle frame.
(b) time taken by the particle to cross the rod in rest frame and rod frame.
(c) time taken by rod to cross the particle in the particle frame.
2. Two spaceship S1 and S2 are moving in a same direction with a speed 0.8c and
0.6c, respectively. Proper length of both ships is 50 meter. Find the time taken by
spaceship S1 to completely overtake the spaceship S2 as seen by observer in rest
frame. Find the time taken by the spaceship S1 to completely overtake S2 as seen by
the observer in S2.
3. A spaceship S1 is leaving earth along the +X direction with a speed 0.6c, another
spaceship S2 also leaves the earth with a speed 0.9c along the direction which makes
the angle 60° with X-axis. Find the speed of S2 as measured by observer in S1.
4. A spaceship passes Earth with a relative speed of 0.8c. After travelling 5 years,
ship stop at lookout post, turn, and then travel back to Earth with the same relative
speed. The trip back takes another 5 years. How long does the round trip take
according to measurements made on Earth?
5. Two events 10 sec apart in time take place at two point 50 meter apart on X axis.
-7

Find the speed of observer moving along the X-axis who observe the two event
simultaneously. What will be the spatial separation between that two events as seen
by the observer.
6. (a) What is the total energy E of a 2.53 MeV electron? (b) What is its momentum
p? (c) What is the Lorentz factor γ for the electron?
7. A particle of rest mass m moving with a velocity 0.8c collide with another
o

stationary particle of rest mass 5m /9 under perfectly inelastic collision. Find the
o

velocity and rest mass of combined body.

8. A particle has a momentum with magnitude 1.2x10 kgm/s and energy 4.42x10

Joules. What is its mass?

9. What is the energy of a particle with rest mass 3.2x10 kg and velocity 0.9c?
-27

10. Two particles with equal speed and mass m approach each other and forms a
single particle at rest. Show the energy is conserved in the frame of big particle.
11. A train has a rest length of 100 m. Traveling at a very high velocity, it goes
through a tunnel of length 80 m. Observers located at both ends of the tunnel note
that at one instant the train appears to exactly fit within the tunnel. What is the
velocity of the train expressed in units of c?
