Q.3 Find the natural frequency of vibration for the system shown in figure below by using
i. Dunkerley's method
ii. Rayleighs method
Take E = 1.96 x 1011 N/m2 and I = 4 x 10-7 m4.

and 400 N respectively at the distances of 30 cm, 60 cm and 90 cm from the left hand
support. Find the natural frequency of the transverse vibration by
i. Dunkerley’s method
ii. Rayleigh’s method
iii. Stodola method
Q.5 Calculate the fundamental natural frequency of vibration of the system as shown in
figure by Stodola method. Neglect the friction between mass and support.

Q.6 Using Rayleigh’s method, determine the first natural frequency of vibration of the
system shown in Figure. Assume k1 = k, k2 = 2k, k3 = 3k, and m1 = m, m2 = 2m, m3 =
3m.

Q.7 Using Rayleigh’s method, find the fundamental natural frequency of the torsional
system shown in figure. Assume that J1 = J0, J2 = 2J0, J3 = 3J0, and kt1 = ktt2 = kt3 = kt.

Q.8 A uniform shaft carries three rotors as shown in Figure with mass moments of inertia
J1 = 5 kgm2, J2 = 15 kgm2and J3 = 25 kgm2. The torsional stiffnesses of the segments

between the rotors are given by kt1 = 20,000 Nm/rad and kt2 = 60,000 Nm/rad.
Determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the system using Holzer’s
method.

Q.9 The natural frequency of vibration, in bending, of the wing of a military aircraft is
found to be 20 Hz. Find the new frequency of bending vibration of the wing when
a weapon of mass 850 kg is attached at the tip of the wing, as shown in Figure.
The stiffness of the wing tip, in bending, is known to be 700 kN/m. Use
Dunkerley’s lower bound approximation method.

Q.10 Using Holzer method, determine the natural frequencies of the spring-mass system as
shown in figure. Take m1 = m3 = 1 kg and m2 = 2 kg.

Q.11 For the torsional system shown in figure, determine the natural frequencies Take I1 =
I3 = 0.45 kg-m2, I2 = I4 = 0.11 kg-m2, Kt1 = kt3 = 0.113 x 102 N/rad and kt2 = 0.226 x
102 N/rad.
