Assignment #2
Problem 1: W

Determine the natural frequency of the shown fixed beam carrying a C

concentrated weight W at its center. Neglect the mass of the beam.
L

Problem 2: W

Determine an expression for the natural frequency of the shown C

cantilever beam carrying a concentrated weight W at its free end.
Neglect the mass of the beam.
L

Problem 3:
The shown beam have length 6m, EI=2x105 kNm2, and carry
weight 25 kN at midspan. If this weight is subjected to initial
displacement 2 cm and initial velocity 25 cm/sec downward,
determine the displacement, velocity and acceleration after 2 sec,
and their maximum values.

Problem 4:
For the shown water tank, the mass of the tower may be neglected and the
total mass is considered 150 tonnes concentrated at the top. A harmonic
oscillation test gave the natural frequency to be 0.41 Hz. What deflection
will occur if 50 kN horizontal load is applied?

Problem 5:
The frame shown is rigidly jointed. The mass of the columns may be neglected, and the deck
mass is 5000 kg, the columns EIC = 4.5× 103 KNm2. For lateral vibration, calculate the
natural frequency and natural period. Find the force needed to deflect the frame 25 mm
laterally.

square column, calculate the undamped natural frequency for
i. horizontal vibration (k=3EI/L3),
ii. Vertical vibration (k=3EI/L).
Assume the total weight of the
system to be concentrated in the tank.
(E=20kN/mm2)

Problem 8:
The free vibration of an undamped system is shown below.
Calculate its
i. Undamped natural period,
