How to apply a simple bandage and use of crutches

Description:

This competency focuses how to apply a simple bandage safely to the arm and instruction on how to
demonstrate the use a set of crutches.

Learning objectives:

Students will demonstrate a knowledge of the equipment required

Students will competently perform the application of a simple bandage in simulation

Students will demonstrate how to use a set of crutches and deliver clear instructions on how to use
them.

Indications for applying a bandage


Bandages are used to protect a wound or to support an injured limb.

Equipment:

Have required equipment gathered before you begin.

 Appropriate bandage size 5-10 cm width


 Tape to secure
 Normal saline or sterile water for cleaning the wound if required
 Type of dressing indicated to cover wound

Procedure:

 Observe hand hygiene


 Introduce yourself to the patient; explain the procedure with possible complications. Avoid
using jargon
 Always ensure you have the correct patient. To do this, confirm the patients name with their
identity band if available.
 Obtain verbal consent
 Remove old dressing carefully – Use warm normal saline if dressing dry and
adhered to wound
 Choose type of dressing to redress wound
 Choose correct size mepore/outer dressing
 Make sure the arm is in a relaxed position slight bend at the joint if it is to be covered
 Start to bandage at the wrist, circle twice to secure.
 Keep the roll in your dominant hand
 Circle the bandage from the wrist to the palm keeping the thumb and fingers exposed
 Circle the palm twice.
 Then move back to wrist and up the arm as required.
 Each circle of the bandage should cover up to half of the previous circle with no wrinkles.
 Ensure the bandage is comfortable and not too restrictive or too loose
 Secure the bandage to avoid unravelling.

Aftercare:

 Dispose of equipment according to hospital


 Document procedure
 Observe patient for adverse reaction:
(A) Ensure the patient can move their fingers and thumb avoiding restriction

(B) Check the perfusion and temperature of the digits i.e. pink and warm
