MT 301 Heat Treatment - Assignment (30 marks)

1. Calculate the time required for 60% transformation of austenite to pearlite at a temperature T, where the
growth rate is 3x10-5 cm/sec and nucleation rate is 1000 /cm3/sec -02
2. The lattice parameters of Austenite and Martensite vary with carbon content as given below. Estimate
the % volume change associated with martensitic transformation in (a) 0.4 % C steel, (b) 0.6 % C steel,
(c) 0.8 % C steel, (d) 1.0 % C steel and in (e) 1.2 % C steel. Discuss the dependency of volume change
on carbon content -12
a0 (austenite) = 3.548 + 0.044 x (%C), a0 (martensite) = 2.861 - 0.013 x (%C)
c0 (martensite) = 2.861 + 0.116 x (%C)
3. A plain carbon steel cooled under equilibrium conditions shows 62.5 % pro-euctectoid ferrite and
37.5 % pearlite. What is the carbon content of the steel? [show the calculations] -02
4. A typical high strength structural steel has a composition in (wt%) of C-0.15, Mn -0.75, S-0.25, Cu-
0.35, Ni-0.75, Cr-0.25 and Mo-0.30. Compute DI of this steel assuming the ASTM no. is 7 and
Multiplying factor for Cu is 1 -05
5. The critical Jominy distance for a steel is 12.5 mm. What is its DI ? What is the DC in water (H=1) ? -02
6. A gas carburizing atmosphere is set at 900oC to give a surface carbon content of 1.2 wt %. The initial
carbon content of steel is 0.2 %. How long would it take to reach a carbon content of 0.7% at a distance
of 1mm from the surface? D at 900oC = 2.98 x 10-11 m2/s .
Use the master plot given below: -03

7. A steel component is induction hardened using a power supply of 500 kHz for 6 secs. Calculate the total
case depth. -02

size number? -02
